1000-MWe LMFBR Follow-On Study, Task I Report: Volume 1

From introduction: "The objective of this study is to provide information that will assist the Atomic Energy Commission in furthering the National Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor (LMFBR) Program. We plan to accomplish this end, in part, by extending the original studies to include system and component design and parametric evaluations of the nuclear steam supply system and its related systems and subsystems based on an estimation of the state of technology in 1980."

B&D power and water plant modifications and operation after deactivation of D reactors (open access)

B&D power and water plant modifications and operation after deactivation of D reactors

Pursuant to the decision of the Atomic Energy Commission to deactivate a fourth Hanford production reactor, engineering studies were initiated in regard to the water supply and distribution systems of the smaller production reactor complex. It was the intent of these studies to effect optimization of the water supply and distribution system which would result in a more effective operation and would continue to meet existing standards and requirements. It is the purpose of this report to document the results of the engineering studies and to describe the functional requirements of the overall water supply and distribution systems.

Contributions to RL-3-0 summary nuclear safety program - Mission 8

The Nuclear Safety Mission consists of seven programs of broad integrated experimental and analytical studies designed to answer long-standing nuclear safety questions and thus assist in providing safeguards against nuclear accidents. It will provide data leading to the technical bases for controlling the consequences of postulated nuclear incidents. Safety standards in the area of nuclear and radiological control are tending towards increased restrictions. As this trend continues it will be necessary for Richland facilities to either show compliance or modify facilities for compliance with new standards.

Effect of S8DR chromium diffusion treatment on the creep rupture properties of processed Hastelloy-N tubing (open access)

Effect of S8DR chromium diffusion treatment on the creep rupture properties of processed Hastelloy-N tubing

Process development personnel have been seeking means of improving the (after thermal exposure) adhesion of the S8DR ceramic coating to chromized Hastelloy N tubing. This effort has led to the incorporation of an elevated temperature chromium diffusion treatment prior to the application of the ceramic coating. This report describes the results of tests performed to ascertain the influence of the additional thermal treatment on the 1400/sup 0/F creep-rupture properties of S8DR tubing.

Hot pressed niobium carbide--graphite composites. Progress report (open access)

Hot pressed niobium carbide--graphite composites. Progress report

Declassfied 30 Aug 1973. An investigation was conducted to determine the manufacturability of hot-pressed 75--25 wt% NbC--graphite composites. Commercially available and custom ground superfine carbide and graphite powder combinations were evaluated; the hot pressing operation was studied; and machining techniques were developed. The relationship of the physical properties of the starting powders to thermal and mechanical properties of the composites was studied. Room temperature and 2400 deg C tensile, compressive, and flexural strengths were determined; tensile creep at 24OO deg C and compressive deformation (creep) at 2200 deg C were studied; and thermal expansion and specific heat to 5000 deg F were determined. In addition, the effect of a post hot-pressing heat treatment was studied. Evaluation of results shows that equally dense, high strength composites can be obtained by hot-pressing large or small billets. For the composition studied, the resulting structure of the superfine carbide graphite powders was a weak carbide continuous phase in a dominant continuous graphite phase. The resulting structure from commercially available carbide/graphite powders was a dominant carbide network. Optimum mechanical properties were obtained both at room temperature and at high temperature, using normal commercially available high purity powders. Thermal properties do not appear to be dependent …

Iron-masonite shield status interim report No. 6

This is number six in a planned series of reports intended to show the status and rates of deterioration of the iron-masonite biological shields of B, Dg DR, F, and H reactors. Since DR, F, and H reactors are in the deactivated state this is the final such report for them. Following the deactivation of D Reactor at the end of June, 1967, B Reactor will be the only one (out of the five with which the shield deterioration study began) to continue operating. Data for this report pertain to the top and left (far) side of the reactors and covers the period from January, 1963, through December, 1966.
