Army Gas-Cooled Reactor Systems program: alternator final design report

The development and testing of a demonstration brushless alternator for the ML-1 mobile nuclear power plant is described. The brushless concept was selected after it became apparent that a conventional power generator could not satisfy the ML-1 weight and size requirements. The demonstration alternator fabricated and tested under this program did not meet all performance specifications; the efficiency was low and the unit could not be operated for significant periods of time without overheating. However, a large body of useful data was accumulated during the extensive development program. Of special interest are data on the rotor and stator design, the cooling requirements and on the distribution of eddy current losses. Analysis of the data indicates that a brushless alternator, only slightly larger and heavier than was specified for the ML-1, could be developed with a modest additional effort.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE SO-CALLED ''ETHYLMETAPHOSPHATE'' (LANGHELDESTER) (open access)

THE STRUCTURE OF THE SO-CALLED ''ETHYLMETAPHOSPHATE'' (LANGHELDESTER)

Phosphorus pentoxide reacts with ether to form bicyclo-tetraphosphate ester (II), cyclotetraphosphate ester (III), isocyclotetraphosphate ester (IV), and tetraphosphate ester (V). Phosphorus n.m.r. measurements show the content of the mixtures. The so-called 'ethyl metaphosphate' (Langheld ester) is a mixture of III (50% to 45%), IV (36% to 25%), and V (14% to 30%).

Fabrication and Properties of Copper-Boron Carbide Control Materials for Phoebus II Reactor (open access)

Fabrication and Properties of Copper-Boron Carbide Control Materials for Phoebus II Reactor

The Phoebus II Reactor required a neutron absorber material for criticality control and a neutron poison material for reducing the flux peak at the forward end of the fuel element. Normal B{sub 4}C was chosen for the neutron absorbing material, and Cu was employed as the matrix.A feasibility study developed procedures for producijg uniform, dense, stable sheet material of Cu-20, 40, and 50 v/o normal B{sub 4}C. The procedures were, with only slight modifications, translated to production operation to yield sheet from which Phoebus II control plates and end poison plates were made.

Determination of Neptunium-237 in Human Urine (open access)

Determination of Neptunium-237 in Human Urine

A method has been developed for determining neptunium -237 in human urine specimens. The urine is acidified, then concentrated by evaporation. Uranium is removed by a double lanthanum fluoride precipitation using ferrous ammonium sulfate and hydroxylamine hydrchloride as reducing agents. Separation from plutonium is effected by a thenoyltrifluoroacetone extraction using potassium iodide-hydrazine or potassium iodide-hydroxylamine to reduce plutonium to Pub$sup +3$ and neptunium to Np$sup +4$. The trivalent plutonium is not extracted by TTA. Neptunium is stripped from the TTA with HCL and electrodeposited on stainless steel discs from an acid-chloride electrolyte. Recovery of a 200 alpha cpm Np$sup 237$ spike is 87% ± 8.5% LE$sub x$ and of a 1 alpha cpm Np$sup 237$ spike is 80% ± 26% LE$sub x$.
