INVESTIGATION OF BURNOUT HEAT FLUX IN RECTANGULAR CHANNELS AT 2000 PSIA (open access)

INVESTIGATION OF BURNOUT HEAT FLUX IN RECTANGULAR CHANNELS AT 2000 PSIA

Burnout heat flux data were obtained under conditions of zero exit quality and bulk boiling at the exit of electrically heated test specimens. These specimens were long, narrow channels with various slot thicknesses, sunfaces, materials, and length-to-diameter ratios. Tests were run at 2000 psia and mass velocities from --0.2 x 10/sup 6/ to 3 x deg was also investigated. The rectangular channel burnout results are in reasonable agreement with data previously obtained for round tubes. A design equation is suggested which yields a conservative estimate of the burnout heat flux in the low subcooling and quality regions. A burnout loop and method of operation are described. (auth)

Transverse Pressure Difference Across Staggered and Inclined Spacers in the Art Fuel-to-NaK Heat Exchanger (open access)

Transverse Pressure Difference Across Staggered and Inclined Spacers in the Art Fuel-to-NaK Heat Exchanger

The ART fuel-to-NaK heat exchanger was modified with six 60 staggered spacers and six 60 inclined spacers alterately placed. Transverse pressure taps were installed across one spacer of each type. The average transverse pressure difference across each instrumented spacer was expressed in terms of the ratio of the transverse pressure difference to the quantity, pu/sup 2//2g,, over the Reynolds modulus range of 3,000 to 8,O00. For the inclined spacer, this term fell between 1.4 and 1.1; for the staggered spacer, the data varied randomly between 0.01 and 0.3 with no definite trend established. The tube bundle friction factor was also determined and fell about 10% below the data previously obtained using vertical spacers. (auth)

The isolation and packaging of fission products at Hanford (open access)

The isolation and packaging of fission products at Hanford

Research and development work on the removal of specific fission products from aqueous wastes has been in progress at the Hanford Atomic Products operation for several years. Initially, the primary incentive lay in the safe and economic disposal of these wastes. Scavenging techniques were developed which permitted the precipitation of the long-lived and biologically hazardous fission products cesium and strontium and the subsequent discharge of the supernates to the soil. Recently, interest has increased in the recovery of specific fission products for use in industry. Accordingly, research and development efforts have been expanded to include the search for economic processes for the isolation of specific fission products from Hanford wastes. The processes and techniques thus far developed are logical outgrowths of the scavenging processes currently being used in the disposal of Hanford wastes. The Hanford Operations Office directed a letter of inquiry to the General Electric Company requesting an appraisal of the feasibility of isolating and packaging radiocesium from Hanford wastes. In accordance with this request, the Engineering Department conducted a brief survey to determine the process, engineering, and economic feasibility of recovering specific fission products from Hanford waste solutions. This document presents the combined efforts of personnel from Chemical …

Spark ignition of flowing gases

Research conducted at the NACA Lewis Laboratory on ignition of flowing gases by means of long-duration discharges is summarized and analyzed. Data showing the effect of a flowing combustible mixture on the physical and electrical characteristics of spark discharges and data showing the effects of variables on the spark energy required for ignition that has been developed to predict the effect of many of the gas-stream and spark variables is described and applied to a limited amount of experimental data.
