Report presenting testing of a rocket-powered cone-cylinder body with a conical boattail to determine the jet interference effects on drag at transonic Mach numbers. If the nozzle was overexpanded, it increased boattail pressure drag at transonic Mach numbers, but an underexpanded nozzle affected boattail drag at 1.59, followed by a drag reduction.

THE TRANSPORT OF ATOMIC DEBRIS FROM OPERATION UPSHOT-KNOTHOLE

In connection with the Upshot-Knothole test series in network consisting of 95 U.S. and 26 forcign stations was set up. Of the 11 devices detonated, ranging in yield from 0.2 to 60 kt, highier activity was found for lower bursts than from air drops. Information relating to the optimum spacing of stations in a gummed film network and the possibility of missing local areas of intense fallout are discussed. (W.D.M.)

Memorandum presenting two-spool matching procedures which may be employed to analyze turbojet, turboprop, and stationary power plants. The procedures were applied to obtain the sea-level static equilibrium performance of a simple two-spool turbojet engine in which the compressor and turbine performances were based on experimental results. Results regarding engine performance at sea-level static conditions, component performance, and effect of compressor-discharge bleed are provided.

Results indicated that stable pitching-moment slopes can be obtained at angles of attack up to 11 degrees in the low speed range of the tests, but further investigation of high subsonic speeds will be necessary.
