Effects of Combinations of Aspect Ratio and Sweepback at High Subsonic Mach Numbers

Report discussing an investigation to determine the effects of sweepback and low aspect ratio on the aerodynamic characteristics of a wing at high subsonic Mach numbers. Tests were performed at aspect ratios of 2, 3, and 5 and sweepback angles of 0, 30, and 45 degrees. Generally, sweepback and low aspect ratio were found to both delay and lessen the effects of compressibility.

Note presenting a derivation of a modified form of Donnell's equation for the equilibrium of thin cylindrical shells which is equivalent to Donnell's equation but has certain advantages in physical interpretation and in ease of solution, particularly in the case of shells with clamped edges. The modified equation can be solved for the buckling stresses of curved sheet having either simply supported or clamped edges by established methods essentially equivalent to those in use for flat sheet.

A Simplified Method of Elastic-Stability Analysis for Thin Cylindrical Shells 1: Donnell's Equation

"The equation for the equilibrium of cylindrical shells introduced by Donnell in NACA Technical Report no. 479 to find the critical stresses of cylinders in torsion is applied to find critical stresses for cylinders with simply supported edges under other loading conditions. It is shown that by this method solutions may be obtained very easily and the results in each case may be expressed in terms of two nondimensional parameters, one dependent on the critical stress and the other essentially determined by the geometry of the cylinder. The influence of boundary conditions related to edge displacements in the shell median surface is discussed" (p. 1).

"Empirical design curves are presented for the critical stress of thin-walled cylinders loaded in axial compression. These curves are plotted in terms of nondimensional parameters of small-deflection theory and are compared with theoretical curves derived for the buckling of cylinders with simply supported and clamped edges. An empirical equation is given for the buckling of cylinders having a length-radius ratio greater than about 0.75" (p. 1).

"An investigation was made in the Langley two-dimensional low-turbulence tunnel on a wing section for the XB-36 airplane equipped with a double slotted flap to determine the effect on lift and drag of various slot-entry skirt extension. A skirt extension of 0.787 deg. was found to provide the best combination of high maximum lift with flap deflected and law drag with flap retracted. The data showed that the maximum lift at intermediate (20 deg. to 45 deg.) flap deflections was lowered considerably by the slot-entry extension; but at high flap deflections the effect was small" (p. 1).

Blood changes in humans following total body irradiation

A major problem encountered in the Manhattan Project was the protection of workers against damage resulting from acute or chronic exposure to external radiation. The problem of how to detect evidence of damage following exposure to total body radiation led to this study. These studies were conducted between January, 1942 and November, 1945. Three groups of persons were employed in this study. The first group of eight individuals harboring incurable neoplasms which was not extensive enough to influence general health, these patients were treated with 400 KV x-radiation while sitting in a wooden chair, doses were 27, 60, and 120r. Three persons having generalized illnesses chronic in nature were given total body radiation using 200 KV X-rays in multiple exposures totaling 100, 300, and 500r. A third group of normal volunteers from personnel of the Metallurgical Laboratory were treated with 200 KV x-rays in three divided doses totaling 21 r. Changes in peripheral blood in the fourteen individuals is reported. In group 1 the most persistent abnormality noted was a diminution in the number of lymphocytes after completion of the treatment. Note presenting a comparison between the measured take-off ground run of an airplane equipped with seven different propeller-engine gear-ratio combinations and the computed distances by two different methods. Results indicated that the values of ground run calculated by Diehl's approximate method checked experimental values with 7 percent but were in error as much as 10 to 15 percent under certain conditions. Improved methods of thrust computation may be required in order to avoid large errors and before any more rigorous methods can be substituted for Diehl's method.
