Aerodynamics of the carburetor air scoop and the engine cowling of a single-engine torpedo-bomber-type airplane

From Introduction: "An investigation of the power-plant installation of a single-engine torpedo-bomber-type airplane has been conducted in the NACA Cleveland altitude wind tunnel at the request of the Bureau of Aeronautics, Navy Department. A similar investigation was previously conducted on a three-tenths scale mock-up of the forward portion of the fuselage of this airplane in the Langley 20-foot tunnel. (See reference 1)."

The Bragg Reflection of Neutrons by a Single Crystal

From cover page: This document has been assigned the above MDDC (Manhattan District Declassification) number, as given in the List of Declassified Documents issued semi-monthly by the Research Division, Manhattan District. In the case of Los Alapnos reports, LADC (Los Alamos Declassification) numbers are listed on the title page if known. This declassified document may differ materially from the original classified document by reason of deletions necessary to accomplish declassification. Hence, this copy of a declassified document does not constitute authority for declassification of classified copies of a similar document which may bear the same title and authors. Reference is made to District Circular Letter (Research Control 47-3) dated 31 October 1946, subject: "Instructions for Use of List of Declassified Documents," which outlines the procedure by means of which declassification of classified copies may be effected. Every effort has been made to reproduce with accuracy of detail the declassified document as certified for declassification. No corrections or changes have been made in the content of the document.

Clamped Long Rectangular Plate Under Combined Axial Load and Normal Pressure

Note presenting a solution for the buckling load and load carried after buckling of a clamped rectangular plate with a width-length ratio of 1:4 under combined normal pressure and axial load. The results indicate that normal pressure causes a smaller increase in the buckling load of plates with clamped edges than of plates with simply supported edges.

Comparative Effectiveness of a Convection Type and a Radiation-Type Cooling Cap on a Turbosupercharger

Note presenting an investigation to compare the effectiveness of two basic methods of cooling a turbosupercharger and to obtain data on the temperature level and distribution in the turbine wheel. Turbine-wheel temperatures were obtained for various conditions of cooling-air mass flow, exhaust-gas temperature, and exhaust-gas mass flow. Modified forms of the standard cooling caps were used to allow for the installation of temperature-measuring devices.

Consideration of Dynamic Loads on the Vertical Tail by the Theory of Flat Yawing Maneuvers

"Dynamic yawing effects on vertical tail loads are considered by a theory of flat yawing maneuvers. A comparison is shown between computed loads and the loads measured in flight in a fighter airplane. The dynamic effects were investigated on a large flying boat for both an abrupt rudder deflection and a sinusoidal rudder deflection" (p. 1).

The effect of simulated icing on propeller performance

Testing of a 10-foot-diameter three-blade Curtiss 89301-15 propeller with Clark Y blade sections was conducted in the 16-foot high-speed tunnel to determine the effect of simulated ice on the aerodynamic characteristics of the propeller. The propellers were tested on a 2000-horsepower dynamometer at rotational speed 1800 rpm at several blade angles and airspeeds. Results regarding the effect of icing and constant-power propeller operation are provided.

Flight Investigation at High Speeds of the Drag of Three Airfoils and a Circular Cylinder Representing Full-Scale Propeller Shanks (open access)

Flight Investigation at High Speeds of the Drag of Three Airfoils and a Circular Cylinder Representing Full-Scale Propeller Shanks

"Tests have been made at high speeds to determine the drag of models, simulating propeller shanks, in the form of a circular cylinder and three airfoils, the NACA 16-025, the NACA 16-040, and the NACA 16-040 with the rear 25 percent chord cut off. All the models had a maximum thickness of 4 1/2 inches to conform with average propeller-shank dimensions and a span of 20 1/4 inches. For the tests the models were supported perpendicular to the lower surface of the wing of an XP-51 airplane (p. 277).

The Geochemistry of Indium (open access)

The Geochemistry of Indium

Abstract" This is a review, with annotated bibliography, of the mode of occurrence of the element indium. It is not a list of specific ore deposits, but a summary of the types of minerals and rocks in which indium has been reported to occur. In addition, the unpublished spectrographic studies of the Geological Survey on mill and smelter products are summarized, best sources of indium are indicated, and suggestions are made for further investigations. Indium has been found to occur most abundantly in sphalerites. The amount ranges from traces to maximum of 1.0 percent. Dark sphalerites are reported richer in indium than light-colored sphalerites. Up to 0.1 percent indium has been reported in chalcopyrite and bornite, but these minerals generally contain very little indium. There is an unverified report of a pegmatite in Utah containing 1.0 to 2.8 percent indium. Some residues in zinc smelting contain more than 1.0 percent indium and are the present source on indium. No better source can be suggested but steps should be taken to ascertain that this source is being fully exploited. Tin sulfide smelter products should be checked. An effort should be made to check the Utah pegmatite occurrence.

High Temperature Refractories for Uranium (open access)

High Temperature Refractories for Uranium

Abstract: "Experiments are described wherein uranium metal was heated in ten different refractory materials under conditions approximating those of the uranium J. The refractory crucibles containing the uranium were placed in graphite crucibles and heated in vacuum for four hours at 1800-1850 C by means of an induction furnace. MgO, W, and TiH were found to be unacceptable containers for uranium at these temperatures. BeO, ThO2 and Un showed some reaction with the uranium, whereas UO2, ZrH, CeS, and ThS were only very slightly affected by the uranium during the runs."
