Report presenting an investigation of the characteristics of partial-span spoilers located at 0.75 of the chord on an NACA 66-series tapered wing, especially at high speeds. The effect of small spoiler projections was found to increase with an increase in speed until the critical Mach number was exceeded.

Analysis of Uranium-Nicked Alloys

Abstract. Methods for determination of both uranium and nickel in solutions of these metals are described. Alloys can be dissolved in nitric acid treated with citric acid to complex the uranium, and the nickel precipitated as nicked dimethylglyoxime. The uranium is reduced and titrated with standard ceric sulfate. These methods are for the determination of macro amounts of uranium and nickel with errors on the order of 0.1%.

From Summary: "A theoretical investigation was made of the behavior of a cantilever beam in rotational motion about a transverse axis through the root determining the stresses, the deflections, and the accelerations that occur in the beam as a result of the arrest of motion. The equations for bending and shear stress reveal that, at a given percentage of the distance from root to tip and at a given trip velocity, the bending stresses for a particular mode are independent of the length of the beam and the shear stresses vary inversely with the length. When examined with respect to a given angular velocity instead of a given tip velocity, the equations reveal that the bending stress is proportional to the length of the beam whereas the shear stress is independent of the length."

Completed Tabulation in the United States of Tests of 24 Airfoils at High Mach Numbers (Derived From Interrupted Work at Guidonia, Italy in the 1.31- by 1.74-Foot High-Speed Tunnel)

Two-dimensional data were obtained in Mach range of from 0.40 to 0.94 and Reynolds Number range of (3.4 - 4.2) X 10 Degrees. Results indicate that thickness ratio is dominating shape parameter at high Mach numbers and that aerodynamic advantages are attainable by using thinnest possible sections. Effects of jet boundaries, Reynolds Number, and Data presented are free from jet-boundary and humidity effects.

Composition and Thermal Decomposition of Uranyl Peroxide

Technical report on the studies that have been made on the composition and thermal decomposition of uranyl peroxide. The conditions of precipitation and drying have been found to have no appreciable effect on the composition of the compound, but do affect the physical appearance of the precipitate and the rate of thermal decomposition. The UO4 + 2H2O appears to be thermodynamically unstable with respect to UO3 at 25 degrees C and atmospheric pressure, although the rate of conversion is extremely slow. The UO4 + 2H2O is completely converted to UO3 on standing at 150 degrees C and atmospheric pressure for two weeks. Partially decomposed uranyl peroxide samples contain extra oxygen which is released on immersing the sample in water.

The corrosion of aluminum in dilute solutions: laboratory studies

After it had been decided that aluminum was to be used as a corrosion-resistant material with good heat transfer properties, it was desired to determine the operating conditions to be used in the water-cooled Handford plant in order to avoid danger of corrosion penetration of thin aluminum parts. The studies here reported were undertaken with the object of determining these conditions by investigating the effects of all the known variables which might influence the corrosion behavior of aluminum in a water-coolded plant at HEW. The addition of hydrogen peroxide to the testing solutions was the only effort made to simulate special conditions at the plant.

"Typical thrust and torque coefficients and increments, due to the propeller, in the ratio of the dynamic pressure at the tail to the free-stream dynamic pressure are presented for 10 full-scale airplanes. Calculations indicate that an error of about 2 percent mean aerodynamic chord appears possible in determining the neutral point from wind-tunnel tests or a model in the gliding condition if the propeller is operated at zero thrust rather than at the values of thrust coefficient indicated by the flight tests" (p. 1).

From Summary: "An analysis of the nose-inlet shapes developed in previous investigations to represent the optimum from the standpoint of critical speed has shown that marked similarity exists between the nondimensional profiles of inlets which have widely different proportions and critical speeds. With the nondimensional similarity of such profiles established, the large differences in the critical speeds of these nose inlets must be a function of their proportions. An investigation was undertaken in the Langley 8-foot high-speed tunnel to establish the effects of nose-inlet proportions on critical Mach number to develop a rational method for the design of high-critical-speed nose inlets to meet desired requirements."
