Investigation of the use of a recycle stream to mediate hydrogen transfer to improve the conversion of eastern oil shale to liquid products
The processing of eastern oil shale has long been known to require the addition of hydrogen to increase the oil yield. Several researchers, have investigated the use of both high pressure hydrogen and hydrogen donor solvents. Much of the donor solvent work has used pure, compounds such as tetralin and has not addressed the use of-a more realistic solvent such as one derived from the production process itself. The work reported herein is for the research Task 1.2.2, Process Studies, in the Annual Project Plan, October l, 1990--September 30, 1991, of the Cooperative Agreement. In the study, a shale oil-derived, recycle oil was used to mediate the transfer of hydrogen to eastern oil shale. The work was divided into two main parts which correspond to the two main portions of the Hydrogen-Extraction (H-E{trademark}) process: (1) the shale oil extraction which involves the use of a donor solvent to aid in the extraction of the shale oil and (2) the regeneration of the donor solvent to a hydrogen-rich state ready for recycle. The results of the investigation to evaluate shale oil extraction using a shale oil-derived donor solvent suggest that temperature had the, greatest effort on organic conversion. At a temperature of …

Representation of Slowing Down Functions in Water by Synthetic Kernels
Fermi, Anderson, and Nagle's experimental distribution of Indium resonance neutrons around a point source of fission neutrons in water has been fitted by analytic expressions which are source functions in the two-group, three-group, Fermi and Christy-Wheeler pile theory. The Christy-Wheeler function (exponential followed by a Gaussian) is the best fit; the two-group function (exponential) is slightly better than the Fermi Gaussian.

The Effects of Static Margin and Rotational Damping in Pitch on the Longitudinal Stability Characteristics of an Airplane as Determined by Tests of a Model in the NACA Free-Flight Tunnel
Report presenting the determination of the effects of static margin and rotational damping in pitch on the longitudinal stability characteristics of an airplane by flight tests of a model in the NACA free-flight tunnel. The rotational damping in pitch was varied over a wide range by using horizontal tails that varied in area from 0 to 24 percent of the wing area. Results regarding the effect of variation of static margin and effect of variation of rotational damping are provided.

Cooling Characteristics of a Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Engine Installed in an NACA Short-Nose High-Inlet-Velocity Cowling
An investigation was made of the cooling characteristics of a P and W R-2800 engine with NACA short-nose high inlet-velocity cowling. The internal aerodynamics of the cowling were studied for ranges of propeller-advance ratio and inlet-velocity ratio obtained by deflection of cowling flaps. Tests included variations of engine power, fuel/air ratio and cooling-air pressure drop. Engine cooling data are presented in the form of cooling correlation curves, and an example for calculation of cooling requirements in flight is included.

Calculation of Stick Forces for an Elevator With a Spring Tab
"Formulas for the calculation of hinge-moment characteristics of an elevator with a spring tab have been developed in terms of basic aerodynamic parameters, spring stiffness, and airspeed. The formulas have been used in a study of the stick-force gradients on a pursuit airplane equipped with an elevator with a spring tab. Charts are presented showing the variation of stick-force gradient in accelerated flight over a large range of speed and the complete range of spring stiffness for various center-of-gravity locations, altitudes, and airplane sizes" (p. 1).

Design of power-plant installations pressure-loss characteristics of duct components
"A correlation of what are believed to be the most reliable data available on duct components of aircraft power-plant installations is presented. The information is given in a convenient form and is offered as an aid in designing duct systems and, subject to certain qualifications, as a guide in estimating their performance. The design and performance data include those for straight ducts; simple bends of square, circular, and elliptical cross sections; compound bends; diverging and converging bends; vaned bends; diffusers; branch ducts; internal inlets; and an angular placement of heat exchangers" (p. 1).

Comparative Results of Tests on Several Different Types of Nozzles
"This paper presents the results of tests conducted to determine the effect of the constructional elements of a Laval nozzle on the velocity and pressure distribution and the magnitude of the reaction force of the jet. The effect was studied of the shapes of the entrance section of the nozzle and three types of divergent sections: namely, straight cone, conoidal with cylindrical and piece and diffuser obtained computationally by a graphical method due to Professor F. I. Frankle. The effect of the divergence angle of the nozzle on the jet reaction was also investigated" (p. 1).

Compressive Strength of Flat Panels with Z- and Hat-Section Stiffeners
Compression tests were conducted on 247 panels with Z-section stiffeners and 304 panels with hat-section stiffeners. Specimens were constructed from artificially aged Alclad 24S aluminum alloy with minimum guaranteed yield strengths of 64 and 57 ksi for stiffeners and sheet materials, respectively. Height, thickness, and spacing of stiffeners, sheet thickness, and length of specimens were varied systematically to show effects of changes in these dimensions on panel strength. Results show average stresses at buckling load and maximum load.

Resistance Tests of a 1/16 Size Model of the Hughes-Kaiser Flying Boat, NACA Model 183
Tank tests were made of a hull model of the Hughes-Kaiser cargo airplane for estimates of take-off performance and maximum gross load for take-off. At hump speeds, with the model free to trim, the trim and resistance were high, which resulted in a load-resistance ratio of approximately 4.0 for a gross load coefficient of 0.75. With a 4000,000-lb load, the full size craft may take off in 69 sec over a distance of 5600 ft.
