Final report describing the results of experiments to test samples of rubber, synthetic rubber, and polyvinylchloride (PVC) to determine their suitability for use in nonmetallic waterstops. During the tests, each of the samples was exposed to various conditions and environments before evaluation. This report discusses longer exposures of materials, to follow the previous report in the series discussing an evaluation of the same tests.

Partial abstract: A 1:100-scale (undistorted) hydraulic model, reproducing Mission Bay Harbor, approximately 3 miles of shoreline, and sufficient offshore area to permit generation of the required test waves, was used to investigate the arrangement and design of proposed structures for (a) improving hazardous entrance conditions, (b) reducing surge inside the harbor, and (c) eliminating potential flood hazards. The original proposal for harbor improvement consisted of a 2,200-ft-long offshore breakwater. The proposed structures for river flood control consisted of (a) a 1,200-ft-long weir in the middle jetty, (b) various south jetty extensions, and (c) diversion dikes on the middle jetty.

This study was funded by NAPEN to aid in evaluating proposed modifications. Plans of improvement for New Jersey inlets and beaches were presented by NAPEN in a Navigation and Cooperative Beach Erosion Control Study.

This report presents the results of a series of investigations to address possible lock operation problems. "Tests to determine operation forces on miter-type lock gates were conducted in a 5.5-ft-wide, 66.5-ft-long, 4.25-ft-deep flume equipped with a single set of miter gate leaves located approximately inthe center of the flume. Three linkages, with differenet kinematics of the operating machinery, were studied: modified Ohio River, Panama, and Ohio River. For each linkage, tests were conducted at gate submergences of 1 to 4 ft and at operating times of 10.1 to 40.2 sec. The effects of chamber length, bottom clearance of gates, presence of barges in the lock chamger, and nonsynchronous operation of the gate leaves also were investigated" (p. vii).

Partial abstract: The purpose of this study is to define the reliability with which results of tests conducted in a physical model of the Delaware River Estuary can be used to predict the effects of modifications to the estuary. The Delaware River model at the Waterways Experiment Station was used to conduct tests to predict the effects of the navigation channel enlargement between Philadelphia and Trenton, and the results of the tests are compared with subsequent prototype data to determine the accuracy of the model predictions.

First report regarding geotechnical field investigations meant to apply current state-of-the-art knowledge and methods to assessing the in situ characteristics of susceptible point bar deposits below Baton Rouge.

This report represents a continuation of efforts by the Lower Mississippi Valley Division (LMVD), US Army Corps of Engineers, to develop an effective plan for and means of protecting the integrity of main line Mississippi River levees from the threat of flow slides in sand deposits.

Partial abstract: "The use of low-density cellular concrete, having an oven-dry unit weight of 50 pcf or less, as a backpacking material for deeply buried protective structures was studied. Cellular concrete was found to be suitable for this type of application. A number of physical properties of cellular concrete were determined to provide input to design codes" (p. 4).

Abstract: "A catalog of recommended accelerograms and response spectra is provided to accompany all representative values for Richter magnitudes at distance determined peak horizontal accelerations-velocities-durations, hard and soft sites, shallow and deep earthquakes. Accelerograms are also recommended for corresponding Modified Mercalli intensities. The accelerograms are related to the Krinitzsky-Chang-Nuttli curves for magnitude and distance, and the Krinitzsky-Chang curves for MM intensity."

Report of findings from various tests: "Model investigations of the surges occurring in sewer lines and of the flow conditions in a typical pumping plant, used to dispose of drainage during high river stages, were conducted as a part of the local flood protection project for Louisville, Kentucky. Studies conducted on a 1:32 scale simplified model of the Southern Outfall Sewer provided general information on the relative amount of relief from surges to be expected from the pumping station and manholes in the sewer line upstream" (p. v).

Report describing various kinds of soils and their characteristics, for use in constructing roads and airfields: "The properties desired in soils for foundations under roads and airfields and for base courses under flexible pavements are: adequate strength, good compaction characteristics, adequate drainage, resistance to frost action in areas where frost is a factor, and acceptable compression and expansion characteristics. Certain of these properties, if inadequate in the soils available, may be supplied by proper construction methods" (p. B1).

Report regarding refraction seismic and vibratory tests conducted on a railroad test embankment near Aikman, Kansas as well as attenuation and dynamic laboratory tests. The refraction seismic tests indicated the existence of two distinct velocity zones, one for the embankment and one for the underlying limestone bedrock.
