The emphasis is on the application of soft X-ray spectroscopy to the study of valence band electronic states in metals and alloys. Therefore, the spectral region of 25 to 800 angstroms involving ruled glass grating spectrometers is of principal interest. In addition to soft X-ray data, references on all pertinent aspects of the apparatus and experimental problems are included. Also listed separately are references of value in corroborating soft X-ray data with other results. Subject, author, X-ray band, material, and other indices are included.

Report issued by the Bureau of Standards over a survey conducted on measurement methods of network parameters. As stated in the introduction, "this paper is concerned with the development of automatic methods of measuring basically the magnitudes and phase differences, or the complex ratio of two sinusoidal voltages, and applications of this capability to determining complex reflection coefficients and transmission coefficients and group delay times of electrical networks" (p. 1). This report includes tables, and illustrations.

Report describing procedures for making quantum mechanical calculations of rotational energy levels and rotational line intensities in diatomic molecules. The procedures are illustrated by sample calculations. A familiarity with the material of this report should enable a practicing electronic spectroscropist to carry out, though in a rather mechanical way, his own theoretical calculations for molecules under experimental investigation.

From Introduction: "This paper describes some results of the first eight years of a fifteen year program in which a variety of coating and catholic protection systems are evaluated on their ability to protect steel piles in offshore conditions at Dam Neck, Virginia. It includes a description of the methods used in the evaluation and the results found on these systems."

From Abstract: "This report describes the use of an air-filled aluminum-alloy ionization chamber to determine the energy transported by a bremsstrahlung beam with maximum photon energy in the range 6 to 170 Mev. This report can be used to construct a replica chamber to determine its absolute calibration between 6 and 170 Mev under a variety of experimental conditions."

Report investigating the effects of time-ordering over the complete line profile using a unified theory of spectral line broadening previously developed. The behavior of the time-ordered thermal average and un-time-ordered thermal average are compared. The Fourier transform of the thermal average is obtained analytically. Calculations for the line profile of the Lyman-[functional symbol alpha] line of hydrogen are presented and are representative in that the full thermal average is replaced by the thermal average with the electron velocity distribution approximated by f(v)=[functional symbol alpha] (v-vav) where vav is the thermal velocity for the plasma in question.

From Introduction: "Following the guidelines established by this committee, several commercially developed precision connectors have appeared on the market which have led to the wide use of the precision coaxial lines as immittance standards. This paper has been prepared to alleviate this situation by providing graphs from which the electrical parameters of the lines may be determined rapidly and accurately."

From Introduction: "The first part of this monograph is concerned with the analysis of closed region wave-guide junction problems. This allows simplification of the techniques to be used since no branch cuts are involved in the spectral representation of the fields. However, the analysis can be extended to open region problems in a logical manner. This is the subject of the second part of this monograph."

Report providing a detailed and analytical assessment of the economic techniques used by researchers to evaluate the efficiency of capital markets. The application of these techniques to that portion of the capital market which supplies venture funds to small, technology-based firms is emphasized. The primary elements of such analysis are the "efficient market ' hypothesis" and the "capital asset pricing model." The empirical analogue of the latter is commonly referred to as the market model."

Report presenting of survey of the literature on the infrared spectroscopy of carbohydrates in order to assemble and systematize information in this field. Discusses principles and instrumentation, sampling techniques, comparison of samples, and the interpretation of the spectra. In addition, examples are discussed of the use of infrared spectra for qualitative and quantitative purposes and in the determination of structure. Special techniques are briefly described.

Report issued by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards discussing piston gage pressure and reducing errors of measurement. Sources of error are described and evaluated in order to "reduce the magnitude of overall error of measurement" (p. 1). This report includes tables, and illustrations.

Report discussing pressure measurements made with piston gages that are affected by gravity, temperature, pressure, and several other variables. For accurate determinations of pressure the calculations must take these variables into account. A general equation is developed and simplified procedures for calculating pressure are illustrated.
