Steady-state and surge characteristics of a compressor equipped with variable inlet guide vanes operating in a turbojet engine (open access)

Steady-state and surge characteristics of a compressor equipped with variable inlet guide vanes operating in a turbojet engine

Report presenting an investigation of a turbojet engine with variable inlet guide vanes in an altitude test facility to determine the steady-state compressor performance and surge characteristics. Compressor surge pressure ratios were found to be unaffected by changes in flight condition for either position of the inlet guide vanes. Decreasing the inlet Reynolds number was found to reduce the corrected fuel flow required for compressor surge.

Canard Hinge Moments and Longitudinal Stability of a 1/7-Scale Model of the Convair B-58 External Store in a Free-Flight Investigation at Mach Numbers From 0.94 to 2.58 (open access)

Canard Hinge Moments and Longitudinal Stability of a 1/7-Scale Model of the Convair B-58 External Store in a Free-Flight Investigation at Mach Numbers From 0.94 to 2.58

Report presenting a longitudinal stability and control investigation of a model of the Convair B-58 external store over a range of Mach numbers. Normal force, chord force, and static and dynamic stability derivatives are provided. Abrupt pitching disturbances were created by step-function movements of the canard surface.

Preliminary Investigation of Effects of Gamma Radiation on Age-Hardening Rate of an Aluminum-Copper Alloy (open access)

Preliminary Investigation of Effects of Gamma Radiation on Age-Hardening Rate of an Aluminum-Copper Alloy

"A preliminary investigation was made to determine the effects of gamma radiation on the age-hardening rate of an aluminum-copper alloy at temperatures of 32 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The gamma radiation from a 100-milligram radium source appeared to have no significant effect on the age-hardening rate of the alloy. A metallographic examination of the test specimens showed no microstructural changes that could be attributed to gamma radiation" (p. 1).

Measurements of the effects of thickness ratio and aspect ratio on the drag of rectangular-plan-form airfoils at transonic speeds (open access)

Measurements of the effects of thickness ratio and aspect ratio on the drag of rectangular-plan-form airfoils at transonic speeds

Report presenting testing conducted on two airfoils from a series of rectangular-plan-form airfoils of aspect ratios 7.6 and 5.1 and with NACA 65-006, 65-009, and 65-012 sections using the free-fall method. Results regarding the time histories, ground-velocity data, airfoil drag measurements, and drag coefficients are provided.

Measurements of Aileron Effectiveness of Bell X-1 Airplane Up to a Mach Number of 0.82 (open access)

Measurements of Aileron Effectiveness of Bell X-1 Airplane Up to a Mach Number of 0.82

"Abrupt, rudder-fixed aileron rolls have been made with the Bell X-1 airplane having a 10-percent-thick wing in glides to a Mach number of 0.82 at about 30,000 feet pressure altitude. Aileron movements were between one-fourth and one-half of full deflection. These aileron rolls indicate that Mach number has little effect on the aileron effectiveness up to a Mach number of 0.82" (p. 1).

Flight Investigation From Mach Number 0.8 to 2.0 to Determine Some Effects of Wing-to-Tail Distance on the Longitudinal Stability and Control Characteristics of a 60 Degree Delta-Wing-Canard Missile (open access)

Flight Investigation From Mach Number 0.8 to 2.0 to Determine Some Effects of Wing-to-Tail Distance on the Longitudinal Stability and Control Characteristics of a 60 Degree Delta-Wing-Canard Missile

Report presenting a flight investigation using rocket-powered models to determine some of the effects of wing-to-tail distance on the stability and control characteristics of a canard-missile configuration with 60 degree delta wings and control surfaces. Both models were tested over a range of Mach numbers from 0.8 to 2.0, and canard hinge moment and model drag data are presented. Testing indicated that additional fuselage length increases the lift-curve slope slightly and has very little effect on minimum drag.

Range Performance of Bombers Powered by Turbine-Propeller Power Plants (open access)

Range Performance of Bombers Powered by Turbine-Propeller Power Plants

"Calculations have been made to find ranges attainable by bombers of gross weights from l40,000 to 300,000 pounds powered by turbine-propeller power plants. Only conventional configurations were considered and emphasis was placed upon using data for structural and aerodynamic characteristics which are typical of modern military airplanes. An effort was made to limit the various parameters invoked in the airplane configuration to practical values" (p. 1).

Canard Hinge Moments and Longitudinal Stability of a 1/7-Scale Model of the Convair B-58 External Store in a Free-Flight Investigation at Mach Numbers From 0.94 to 2.58: Coord. No. AF-204

Memorandum presenting a longitudinal stability and control investigation made over a range of Mach numbers of a scale model of the Convair B-58 external store. Normal force, chord force, and static and dynamic stability derivatives formed an important part of the results. Results regarding the hinge moments and longitudinal trim and force coefficients are also provided.
