An Additional Investigation of the High-Speed Lateral-Control Characteristics of Spoilers

Report presenting an investigation of the characteristics of partial-span spoilers located at 0.75 of the chord on an NACA 66-series tapered wing, especially at high speeds. The effect of small spoiler projections was found to increase with an increase in speed until the critical Mach number was exceeded.

Completed Tabulation in the United States of Tests of 24 Airfoils at High Mach Numbers (Derived From Interrupted Work at Guidonia, Italy in the 1.31- by 1.74-Foot High-Speed Tunnel)

Two-dimensional data were obtained in Mach range of from 0.40 to 0.94 and Reynolds Number range of (3.4 - 4.2) X 10 Degrees. Results indicate that thickness ratio is dominating shape parameter at high Mach numbers and that aerodynamic advantages are attainable by using thinnest possible sections. Effects of jet boundaries, Reynolds Number, and Data presented are free from jet-boundary and humidity effects.

Cooling Characteristics of a Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Engine Installed in an NACA Short-Nose High-Inlet-Velocity Cowling

An investigation was made of the cooling characteristics of a P and W R-2800 engine with NACA short-nose high inlet-velocity cowling. The internal aerodynamics of the cowling were studied for ranges of propeller-advance ratio and inlet-velocity ratio obtained by deflection of cowling flaps. Tests included variations of engine power, fuel/air ratio and cooling-air pressure drop. Engine cooling data are presented in the form of cooling correlation curves, and an example for calculation of cooling requirements in flight is included.

The Effect of Inlet Pressure and Temperature on the Efficiency of a Single Stage Impulse Turbine Having an 11.0-Inch Pitch-Line Diameter Wheel

Efficiency tests have been conducted on a single-stage impulse engine having an 11-inch pitch-line diameter wheel with inserted buckets and a fabricated nozzle diaphragm. The tests were made to determine the effect of inlet pressure, Inlet temperature, speed, and pressure ratio on the turbine efficiency. An analysis is presented that relates the effect of inlet pressure and temperature to the Reynolds number of the flow. The agreement between the analysis and the experimental data indicates that the changes in turbine efficiency with Inlet pressure and temperature may be principally a Reynolds number effect.

"The effects of direction of propeller rotation on factors affecting the longitudinal stability of the XB-28 airplane were measured on a 1/10-scale model in the 7- by 10-foot tunnel of the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory. The main effect observed was that caused by regions of high downwash behind the nacelles (power off as well as power on with flaps neutral). The optimum direction of propeller rotation, both propellers rotating up toward the fuselage, shifted this region off the horizontal tail and thus removed its destabilizing effect" (p. 1).

Effects on Low-Speed Spray Characteristics of Various Modifications to a Powered Model of the Boeing XPBB-1 Flying Boat

Report presenting tests of a powered model of the Boeing XPBB-1 flying boat in order to observe the effects of trim and powered propellers, of lengths of forebody and afterbody, and of various spray strips on the low-speed spray characteristics. The effects of powering the propellers were to lower the trim and to pick up spray that would not strike the propeller disks when the propellers were windmilling. Results regarding the effects of trim and powered propellers, effect of length of forebody and afterbody, effect of angle of dead rise, and effect of various spray strips are provided.

The investigation of the aircraft included a description of its characteristics, speed, range, effect of wing selection of speed, and effect of size on performance.

The Reaction Jet as a Means of Propulsion at High Speeds

Report presenting a simple equation that can be used to facilitate the appraisal of the conventional jet as a means of propulsion. The equation can be used to estimate the performance of a large variety of aeropropulsive devices. The results using this equation indicate that attainable propulsive efficiencies at high speeds below sonic velocity are certain to be lower than is common at low speeds with the conventional propeller.

"Results of a study to determine the effects on turning performance due to various assumed modifications to a typical Naval fighter airplane are presented. The modifications considered included flaps of various types, both part and full space, increased supercharging, and increased wing loading. The calculations indicated that near the low-speed end of the speed range, the turning performance, as defined by steady level turns at a given speed, would be improved to some extent by any of the flaps considered at altitudes up to about 25,000 feet" (p. 1).

"Hinge-moment, lift, and pressure-distribution measurements were made in the two-dimensional test section of the NACA stability tunnel on a blunt-nose balance-type aileron on an NACA 66,2-216 airfoil at speeds up to 360 miles per hour corresponding to a Mach number of 0.475. The tests were made primarily to determine the effect of speed on the action of this type of aileron. The balance-nose radii of the aileron were varied from 0 to 0.02 of the airfoil chord and the gap width was varied from 0.0005 to 0.0107 of the airfoil chord. Tests were also made with the gap sealed" (p. 1).
