Introduction: The experimental work at Mound Laboratory on bismuth casting and the sealing of aluminum irradiation containers is an outgrowth of the bismuth recovery project. Since the recovered bismuth contains residual activity it is necessary that the bismuth be processed to the point that no contamination will result from shipment or any subsequent operations required to prepare the bismuth for irradiation. In order to satisfy these requirements the work here has consisted of investigating methods of preparing the bismuth slugs in the shapes required and of mechanically sealing the aluminum container.

This report covers the progress made on an intensive program to develop and evaluate UO2 as a possible fuel element for the PWR.

Abstract: A drilling program was conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission on Cove Mesa, Arizona to further develop uranium and vanadium ore reserves that are vital to the National Defense. The drilling was performed by the Minerals Engineering Company of Grand Junction, Colorado. Uranium and vanadium ore horizons are found in the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation on Cove Mesa.

Abstract: An airborne radiometric survey of the Dakota sandstone and Morrison formation in the Canon City embayment was conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission from November 1, 1953 to December 5, 1953.

When an aqueous solution containing dissolved irradiated uranium and nitric acid is equilibrated with 30% tributylphosphate solution in kerosene, the distribution co-efficients for sirconium and niobium are decreased by the addition of phosphoric acid to the system.
