Alloys of Uranium with Zirconium, Chromium, Columbium, Vanadium, and Molybdenum (open access)

Alloys of Uranium with Zirconium, Chromium, Columbium, Vanadium, and Molybdenum

Abstract: Information on five uranium binary alloy systems has been surveyed. These systems are the alloys of uranium with zirconium, chromium, columbium, vanadium, and molybdenum. The equilibrium diagrams are discussed, and where available, data have been included on diffusion studies, cladding experiments, and mechanical properties.

Bismuth Casting and Canning : (Information Report) (open access)

Bismuth Casting and Canning : (Information Report)

Introduction: The experimental work at Mound Laboratory on bismuth casting and the sealing of aluminum irradiation containers is an outgrowth of the bismuth recovery project. Since the recovered bismuth contains residual activity it is necessary that the bismuth be processed to the point that no contamination will result from shipment or any subsequent operations required to prepare the bismuth for irradiation. In order to satisfy these requirements the work here has consisted of investigating methods of preparing the bismuth slugs in the shapes required and of mechanically sealing the aluminum container.

Distribution and Origin of Phosphate in the Land-Pebble Phosphate District of Florida (open access)

Distribution and Origin of Phosphate in the Land-Pebble Phosphate District of Florida

From abstract: The land-pebble phosphate district of Florida is a part of the Gulf Coastal Plain. The geologic formations cropping out in the district are the Miocene Hawthorn, Pliocene Bone Valley, and Pleistocene terrace sands. The Bone Valley formation consists of a lower strongly phosphatic unit and an upper less phosphatic unit. This paper is concerned principally with the lower unit, which contains the bulk of the minable phosphate deposits of the district.

The Distribution of Uranium-Vanadium Deposits in the Colorado Plateau Relative to Tertiary Intrusive Masses (open access)

The Distribution of Uranium-Vanadium Deposits in the Colorado Plateau Relative to Tertiary Intrusive Masses

Introduction: Studies of uranium-vanadium occurrences in the Four Corners region show that, with the exception of the Lukachuai area, all of the major deposits in the Morrison formation are grouped around the various igneous masses which are scattered irregularly throughout the Colorado Plateau. The pattern of deposition varies from mountain group to mountain group and each will be described separately. Maps accompany this report to supplement the descriptions of ore occurrences in the vicinity of the La Sal, Abajo, Carrizo, and Henry mountains. Elsewhere, it is believed that a written description will suffice.

Effect of Fluoride on the Gravimetric Determination of Zirconium in Zirconium Fluoride (open access)

Effect of Fluoride on the Gravimetric Determination of Zirconium in Zirconium Fluoride

Abstract: "The results of this investigation that it is necessary to remove fluoride prior to precipitation zirconium with mandelic acid or phenyl arsonic acid. Fluoride, however, has little effect on the cupferron method of precipitation. The discovery that zirconium fluoride is soluble in a mixture of aqua regia and sulfuric acid made it possible to dissolve the material without the addition of fluoride from hydrofluoric acid."

The Occurrence of Zeunerite at Brooks Mountains, Seward Peninsula, Alaska (open access)

The Occurrence of Zeunerite at Brooks Mountains, Seward Peninsula, Alaska

Abstract: Zeunerite occurs near the surface of a granite stock on the southwest flank of Brooks Mountain, Alaska. The largest deposit is at the Foggy Day prospect where zeunerite is disseminated in hematite which partially or totally fills openings and vugs in a highly oxidized lensshaped body of pegmatitic granite and to a minor extent in openings and cracks in the weathered granite enclosing the lens. Although a few specimens from the pegmatitic lens contain as high as 2.1 percent equivalent uranium, the overall average content of the lens rock is between 0.1 and 0.2 percent equivalent uranium and about 0.07 percent equivalent uranium for both the lens material and the surrounding zeunerite-bearing granite.
