Off-Site Animal Investigation Report : Second Annual Report (open access)

Off-Site Animal Investigation Report : Second Annual Report

Since the inauguration of the Off-Site Animal Investigation project n 1957, there has been one annual report rendered as of 30 June 1958. this is the second annual report dated as of 30 June 1959. The objectives of the project have been unchanged during the past year. These are (1) to enhance the Nevada Test Site/off-site rancher relationship through an active investigation project in their interests, and (2) to provide further information as to the status of the off-site animals in their environment, with special emphasis on their radioactive isotope uptake from fall-out. isotope uptake of the animals is being emphasized as well as the gross and microscopic histopathological examinations. Two year's existence in an area of radio-contamination where a full fission spectrum of isotopes can be found, where radiation background reading range from 1/2 mr per hour to 1 = per hour, has produced no noticeable effect on the animals.

Heat Transfer in Septafoil Geometries by Mass-Transfer Measurements (open access)

Heat Transfer in Septafoil Geometries by Mass-Transfer Measurements

In conjunction with Gas-Cooled Reactor heat-transfer studies, local and mean heat-transfer factors are predicted from the heat transfer-mass transfer analogy using subliming naphthalene in air. Experimentation was conducted on 1-in.-dis septafoil rods in a 4-in. -dis flow channel with rod center-to center spacings of 1.10, 1.25, and 1.40 in. at a Reynolds modulus of approximately 60,000. Ratios of local mass transfer to mean mass transfer for a given rod vary as much as from 0.7 to 1.3 (outer rod, 1.10-in. spacings). Mean values of the mass-transfer factor are, in general, above that predicted by the correlation j-0.023 NRe^-0.2; as much as 46% got the outer rod t 1.25-in. spacing. The data indicate that for maximum mass transfer and minimum variation of the mass-transfer factor, an optimum rod spacing exists; the best observes is at 1.40-in.

Progress Report - Studies on the Propagation of Gamma Rays in Air (open access)

Progress Report - Studies on the Propagation of Gamma Rays in Air

Initial rough measurements of the quality of the gamma radiation from Co-60 in air indicated agreement with the theoretical calculations of Spencer and Fano for an infinite water medium. Further experiments were performed, duplicating the conditions assumed in the calculations. Since the spectral region between 100 kev and 1 mev has already been examined by Hayward, it was decided to investigate in detail the region below 100 kev and above 1.0 mev. Total radiation dosage measurements were made in water using Victoreen ion chambers. The build-up factor was measured as a function of distance. Good agreement was obtained with the results of White. The spectrum below 150 kev was examined with a small NaI(Tl) scintillation counter and both the shape of the spectrum and the attenuation as a function of distance was in good agreement with the calculations. At distance less than 30 cm from the source the spectral shape changed, gradually broadening with the peak shifting to higher energies. The primary region above 1.0 mev was examined using a large NaI(Tl) crystal, and the gradual loss of resolution in the two primaries as a function of distance with an increase in lower energy events was shown. The measurements to …

Design Study for a 15-BeV Accelerator (open access)

Design Study for a 15-BeV Accelerator

This report is the culmination of a year of progress and planning in the high-energy particle field. During this year the Brookhaven Cosmotron has been successfully completed and brought into operation for research at 2.3 Bev. Preliminary experimental results with the copious output of π-mesons are in process of publication. Multiple production of mesons has been observed, a few V-particles detected, and the interactions of π-mesons in hydrogen have been studied. Yet it already appears that higher energies will be needed to produce and study the several new heavy particles detected in cosmic ray observations.

Investigations of Radioactive Fuel-Bearing Glasses (open access)

Investigations of Radioactive Fuel-Bearing Glasses

"A series of high urania-content glasses were fiberized and examined for high-temperature strength properties. One glass, RX360 containing 60% U/sub 3/O/ sub 8/ by weight, had better high-temperature tensile properties than any glass previously reported. It was observed that many of the glasses studied separated into immiscible phases and that the fiberizable glass phase had lower U/sub 3/O/ sub 8/ content than the base compositions. A physical analysis of crystal structures of the devitrification products from the nuclear fuel glasses indicated that most of the crystals consisted of uranium oxide in a reduced state. By adding O/sub 2/ to molten glass, it was possible to eliminate most of this devitrification. By elimination of crystals, the fiberizing of the glass was more uniform and the glasses produced had more consistent physical properties."

Respiratory Protective Equipment, A Final Report (open access)

Respiratory Protective Equipment, A Final Report

"Properly designed and fitted respirators have been effective devices for reducing the inhalation of toxic aerosols. The degree of protection afforded by these devices has not been quantitatively measured under actual work conditions except by bioassay or other elaborate techniques. This report describes a new quantitative technique for evaluating over-all respiratory performance under conditions comparable to exposure to highly toxic radioactive materials such as plutonium and non-radioactive materials such as beryllium."

Composition and Thermal Decomposition of Uranyl Peroxide (open access)

Composition and Thermal Decomposition of Uranyl Peroxide

Technical report on the studies that have been made on the composition and thermal decomposition of uranyl peroxide. The conditions of precipitation and drying have been found to have no appreciable effect on the composition of the compound, but do affect the physical appearance of the precipitate and the rate of thermal decomposition. The UO4 + 2H2O appears to be thermodynamically unstable with respect to UO3 at 25 degrees C and atmospheric pressure, although the rate of conversion is extremely slow. The UO4 + 2H2O is completely converted to UO3 on standing at 150 degrees C and atmospheric pressure for two weeks. Partially decomposed uranyl peroxide samples contain extra oxygen which is released on immersing the sample in water.
