Caustic Treatment of Zircon in the Preparation of Pure Zirconium Compounds

From abstract: This investigation was conducted in order to develop a process whereby the most abundant zirconium ore, namely zircon, could economically be put into solution and purified adequately for use in hafnium separation processes employing liquid-liquid extraction. Secondary aims concerned the preparation of pure zirconyl chloride, zirconyl nitrate, zirconyl sulfate, and zirconium oxide from the zircon ore.

Data From Flow-Field Surveys Behind a Large-Scale Thin Straight Wing of Aspect Ratio 3

Memorandum presenting limited flow-field surveys made behind a large-scale thin straight wing of aspect ratio 3, both alone and in combination with a body and vertical tail. The surveys indicated a region of high downwash angles, low dynamic pressures, and rough flow, that extended higher above the wing chord plane, and farther aft, with increasing angle of attack beyond the tail.

Decay Modes Of Charged [Sigma] Hyperons

Apparent [Sigma] hyperon decay events in a large emulsion stack of 240 9" x 12" pellicles have been classified into those judged to have occurred at rest and those in flight. Of 36 decay events at rest, 21 secondaries were observed to be protons of about 1675 microns range. Of the events decaying in flight, 23 were decays into protons and 46 were decays into near-minimum secondaries. Attempts have been made to trace the tracks of 35 of the lightly ionizing secondaries; the results of this effort are summarized in a table.

Effect of aerodynamic heating on the flutter of a rectangular wing at a Mach number of 2

Report presenting the flutter of a solid wing as affected by aerodynamic heating, which can cause a large momentary loss in torsional stiffness. Both experimental and analytical studies were conducted and good correlation was demonstrated. The loss of stiffness due to aerodynamic heating was calculated and the operational line intersected with the flutter curve.

Report presenting an experimental investigation using a 1 7/8-inch diameter burner to determine the suitability of residual fuel oils as carriers in magnesium slurries. Four residual fuel oils with varying viscosities were investigated by themselves and in slurries of 50 percent magnesium. Results regarding the settling characteristics, blow-out velocity, and combustion efficiency are provided.

It is being considered that the in-reactor portion of the test section of the PRTR Gas-Cooled Loop Facility consist, in part, of two concentric Inconel-X tubes. The outer tube is the main stress member, with 3.5 O.D. and a wall thickness of 0.065. The inner tube is 3.0 O.D. and has a wall thickness of 0.030. The inner tube provides an annular gas space to serve as thermal insulation.

Gravitational-Electromagnetic Torus Models of the Elementary Particles

Abstract: "A torus model of the elementary particles is suggested in which the electron and proton are made stable by gravitational forces derived from the electromagnetic field. It is suggested that the gravitational forces for the unstable particles, presumably the mesons, are not sufficient to keep the torus from expanding in the direction of its large radius. Rest energy zero can be achieved, presumably for photons and neutrons, when the gravitational energy and electromagnetic field energy are equal in magnitude. The manner in which these models can exhibit spin, magnetic moment, wave length, and phase velocity is indicated. The origin of nuclear forces from an electromagnetic basis is indicated."

"An investigation at a free-stream Mach number of 2.02 was made to determine the effects of a propulsive jet on a wing surface located in the vicinity of a choked convergent nozzle. Static-pressure surveys were made on a flat surface that was located in the vicinity of the propulsive jet. The nozzle was operated over a range of exit pressure ratios at different fixed vertical distances from the flat surface. Within the scope of this investigation, it was found that shock waves, formed in the external flow because of the presence of the propulsive jet, impinged on the flat surface and greatly altered the pressure distribution" (p. 1).

Possible Process Alternatives for Converting Recovered Uranyl Nitrate to Uranium Hexafluoride

The uranium recovery processes which are in operation or under construction at the present time--TBP, Redox and Purex--yield an aqueous uranyl nitrate solution as the recovered uranium product. For conversion of this recovered uranium to UF6 for feed to the gaseous diffusion plants, the uranyl nitrate in the solution is concentrated with or without prior organic stripping, calcined to UC3, reduced to UO2 with hydrogen, hydro-fluorinated to UF4 with RF, and finally fluorinated to UF6 with elemental fluorine.

THE PROBLEM OF MEASURING THE ABSOLUTE YIELD OF 14-Mev NEUTRONS BY MEANS OF AN ALPHA COUNTER

The assumptions used to derive the total neutron yield per detected alpha particle (from the D-T reaction) which were derived in an earlier report are reexamined in the light of additional experimental information. It is concluded that for an alpha counter at 90 deg to the incident beam direction the assumptions introduce practically no difficulties. Therefore, for precise monitoring in the absence of certain target information it is recommended that this configuration be used. For counters at angles different from 90 deg , nonuniformity of target loading contributes the most serious error to the computed yield. (auth)

Radioactivity Associated With Underground Nuclear Explosions

The detonation of a contained or partially contained nuclear explosion is accompanied by the deposition of a large fraction of the energy in the form of high-temperature, high-pressure regions. The nature of the surrounding medium, the time-temperature history, and the time of cavity collapse or venting determine the extent to which undesirable nuclides such as Sr/sup 90/ and Cs/sup 137/ will appear outside a fused insoluble matrix and be available to ground water or to the atmosphere. The movement of these undesirable radioactivities relative to the ground water movement can be predicted on the basis of measured K/ sub D/'s (distribution coefficients) for the radioactivities in the medium. The induced radioactivities are a 20 to 25% contribution to the fission product radioactivity at times the order of one day, a 1% contribution at about 1 week, decreasing to 0. 1% at about 45 days, increasing to about 2% because of the Co/ sup 60/ for a period of 3 to 15 years. Reduction of waste storage costs

This memorandum covers the results of a study aimed at recommending a general course of action on waste handling and storage at Savannah River. It is the intent of the study to develop recommendations applying to the immediate needs for additional waste storage capacity, to plant tests of methods for reducing waste volumes to engineering design and development aimed at future economies, and to research on longer term phases of the program. It is further intended that steps recommended for the immediate future be such as to permit taking maximum advantage of late developments.
