Calculations of Laminar Heat Transfer Around Cylinders of Arbitrary Cross Section and Transpiration-Cooled Walls With Application to Turbine Blade Cooling (open access)

Calculations of Laminar Heat Transfer Around Cylinders of Arbitrary Cross Section and Transpiration-Cooled Walls With Application to Turbine Blade Cooling

"An approximate method for the development of flow and thermal boundary layers in the laminar region on cylinders with arbitrary cross section and transpiration-cooled walls is obtained by the use of Karman's integrated momentum equation and an analogous heat-flow equation. Incompressible flow with constant property values throughout the boundary layer is assumed. The velocity and temperature profiles within the boundary layer are approximated by expressions composed of trigonometric functions" (p. 339).

Comparison of Several Methods of Cyclic De-Icing of a Gas-Heated Airfoil (open access)

Comparison of Several Methods of Cyclic De-Icing of a Gas-Heated Airfoil

"Several methods of cyclic de-icing of a gas-heated airfoil were investigated to determine ice-removal characteristics and heating requirements. The cyclic de-icing system with a spanwise ice-free parting strip in the stagnation region and a constant-temperature gas-supply duct gave the quickest and most reliable ice removal. Heating requirements for the several methods of cyclic de-icing are compared, and the savings over continuous ice prevention are shown. Data are presented to show the relation of surface temperature, rate of surface heating, and heating time to the removal of ice" (p. 1).

The effect of turbulence on the drag of flat plates (open access)

The effect of turbulence on the drag of flat plates

"In determining the effect of turbulence on the forces exerted on bodies in the air stream of a wind tunnel, it is commonly assumed that the indications of the standard Pitot-static tube used to determine the air speed are not dependent on the turbulence. To investigate the truth of this assumption, the drag of a normally exposed flat plate, the difference in pressure between the front and rear of a thin circular disk, the rate of rotation of a vane anemometer, and the pressure developed by a standard Pitot-static tube were measured in an air stream for several conditions of turbulence. The results may be interpreted as indicating that there is no appreciable effect of turbulence on the vane anemometer and the standard pitot-static tube, but that there is small effect on the drag of a flat plate and the pressure difference between front and rear of a disk" (p. 129).

Fabrication Techniques and Heat-Transfer Results for Cast-Cored Air-Cooled Turbine Blades

Memorandum presenting an investigation to devise an air-cooled turbine blade which eliminated the difficulties encountered with brazing in air-cooled-blade fabrication. Techniques were developed for casting air-cooled blades with a large number of relatively small cooling passages near the airfoil surface; two such blades of HS-21 material were operated in a turbojet engine modified for air cooling. Results regarding the heat-transfer characteristics, stress and durability results, and evaluation of cast-cored-blade potential are provided.

Non-destructive Testing Hanford Fuel (open access)

Non-destructive Testing Hanford Fuel

At present, emphasis is being given the application of nondestructive testing to the inspection of nuclear fuel in conjunction with complete product specifications. The objective is to quantitatively specify fuel quality parameters, and to measure the entire fuel production against these specifications nondestructively. Under this concept the acceptability of a given fuel element becomes a well-defined factor readily determined by appropriate nondestructive tests.
