Bismuth Casting and Canning : (Information Report)

Introduction: The experimental work at Mound Laboratory on bismuth casting and the sealing of aluminum irradiation containers is an outgrowth of the bismuth recovery project. Since the recovered bismuth contains residual activity it is necessary that the bismuth be processed to the point that no contamination will result from shipment or any subsequent operations required to prepare the bismuth for irradiation. In order to satisfy these requirements the work here has consisted of investigating methods of preparing the bismuth slugs in the shapes required and of mechanically sealing the aluminum container.

Memorandum presenting characteristics of a hydraulic control as determined by analyzing transient data obtained with a turbojet engine operating in the altitude wind tunnel. The excellent overall performance of the speed control is attributed to the elimination of large lags in the control system, thereby permitting the use of relatively high loop gains while still maintaining satisfactory damping in transients. Some information regarding the frequency-response analysis of speed control, simulation of speed control, and acceleration control are provided.

Comparative Tensile Strengths at 1200 Degrees F of Various Root Designs for Cermet Turbine Blades

Report presenting specimens of five different root designs, proportioned in accordance with the design surveys, and specimens of a conventional fir-tree turbine root were fabricated from a titanium carbide cement bonded with nickel. Comparative strengths were determined by short-term tensile tests at 1200 degree Fahrenheit. Results regarding blade root evaluation and rotor-segment evaluation are provided.

DEVELOPMENT OF RADIATION RESISTANT OILS. Report No. 11

Oils made up of alkylbenzenes, polymers and dialkyl selenide were compounded, compared with conventional mincral oils of same viscosity, and subjected to 10/sup 10/ r gamma radiation. The results indicate promise for these materials as radiation resistant oils, with probable residual lubricity up to 10/sup 10/ r. The conventional specification oils werc chnged considerably. The radiation affected the appearance, color, pour point, and viscosity of all the oils, but not the acidity or wear properties. (T. R. H.)

High-Energy Beta Decay of Light Elements

The beta decay of the radioactive members of the mass-eight and -twelve triads has been studied with a spiral-orbit spectrometer having a 1.3% resolution. The end point, half-life and log-ft values respectively are: for N{sup 12}, 16.37 {+-} 0.06 MeV, 11.43 {+-} 0.05 milliseconds, and 4.17; for B{sup 12}, 13.40 {+-} 0.05 MeV, 20.6 {+-} 0.2 msec and 4.11; for B{sup 8}, 14 MeV (broad), 0.75 {+-} 0.02 sec, and 5.72; and for Li{sup 8}, 13 Mev (broad), 0.87 {+-} 0.01 sec, and 5.67. The mass excesses in millimass units are: for N{sup 12}, 22.48 {+-} 0.06; for B{sup 12}, 18.19 {+-} 0.06; for B{sup 8}, 27.08 {+-} 0.13; and for Li{sup 8}, 24.97 {+-} 0.09. The shapes of the Kurie function for the mirror pairs indicate positron and electron transitions to the same levels of the daughter nuclide, with greater percentages in the positron branches relative to the ground-state transitions because of the higher energy available. The Li{sup 8} and B{sup 8} shapes are consistent with the shape of the alpha spectrum following the decay of the Be{sup 8} daughter. Two methods were evaluated for removal of 1 to 5 kilowatts from a 1-in.- diam. by 10 in. long bomb to be (W-7405-eng-261. 8O(ph OTS); 70(mf OTS). maintained at 250 to 300 deg C. Conductance control, varying the composition of a helium--air mixture in a 8 mil annulus to give a controlled conduction heat transfer resistance, gave a simple, smooth, flexible control method. Use of water sprayed into air gave the required range of heat fluxes, but sometimes gave uncontrollable instabilities due to progressive vapor binding. (auth)

"Experimental measurements of the attenuation of plane shock waves moving over rough walls have been made in a shock tube. Measurements of the boundary-layer characteristics, including thickness and velocity distribution behind the shock, have also been made with the aid of new cal techniques which provide direct information on the local boundary-layer conditions at the rough walls. Measurements of shock speed and shock pressure ratio are presented for both smooth-wall and rough-wall flow over lengths of machined-smooth and rough strips which lined all four walls of the shock tube" (p. 1).

Abstract: A drilling program was conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission on Cove Mesa, Arizona to further develop uranium and vanadium ore reserves that are vital to the National Defense. The drilling was performed by the Minerals Engineering Company of Grand Junction, Colorado. Uranium and vanadium ore horizons are found in the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation on Cove Mesa.

Performance of mixed-flow impeller, model MFI-1B, with diffuser vanes at equivalent impeller speeds from 1100 to 1700 feet per second

Report presenting an investigation of the performance characteristics of a mixed-flow impeller (Model MFI-1B) in combination with a vaned diffuser. The results indicated that the peak pressure ratio and maximum efficiency were not being obtained at overdesign speeds because of premature surge. Increasing inlet angle at the leading edge of the vanes improved the pressure ratio and efficiency at overdesign speeds with little to no effect on underdesign speeds.
