10-MWe pilot-plant-receiver-panel test-requirements document: Solar Thermal Test Facility

Plans are presented for insolation testing of a full-scale test receiver panel and supporting hardware which essentially duplicate both physically and functionally the design planned for the 10 MWe pilot plant. Testing includes operation during normal start and shutdown, intermittent cloud conditions, and emergencies to determine the transient and steady state operating characteristics and performance under conditions equal to or exceeding those expected in the pilot plant. The effects of variations of input and output conditions on receiver operation are also to be investigated. A brief description of the pilot plant receiver subsystem is presented, followed by a detailed description of the receiver assembly to be tested at the Solar Thermal Test Facility. Major subassemblies are described, including the receiver panel, flow control, electrical control and instrumentation, and the structural assembly. Requirements of the Solar Thermal Test Facility for the tests are given. System safety measures are described. The tests, operating conditions, and expected results are presented. Quality assurance, task responsibilities, and test documentation are also discussed. (LEW)

100 Area soil washing: Bench scale tests on 116-F-4 pluto crib soil

The Pacific Northwest Laboratory conducted a bench-scale treatability study on a pluto crib soil sample from 100 Area of the Hanford Site. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of physical separation (wet sieving), treatment processes (attrition scrubbing, and autogenous surface grinding), and chemical extraction methods as a means of separating radioactively-contaminated soil fractions from uncontaminated soil fractions. The soil washing treatability study was conducted on a soil sample from the 116-F-4 Pluto Crib that had been dug up as part of an excavation treatability study. Trace element analyses of this soil showed no elevated concentrations above typically uncontaminated soil background levels. Data on the distribution of radionuclide in various size fractions indicated that the soil-washing tests should be focused on the gravel and sand fractions of the 116-F-4 soil. The radionuclide data also showed that {sup 137}Cs was the only contaminant in this soil that exceeded the test performance goal (TPG). Therefore, the effectiveness of subsequent soil-washing tests for 116-F-4 soil was evaluated on the basis of activity attenuation of {sup 137}Cs in the gravel- and sand-size fractions.

324 Facility B-Cell quality process plan

B-Cell is currently being cleaned out (i.e., removal of equipment, fixtures and residual radioactive materials) and deactivated. TPA Milestone M-89-02 dictates that all mixed waste and equipment be removed from B-Cell by 5/31/99. The following sections describe the major activities that remain for completion of the TPA milestone. This includes: (1) Size Reduce Tank 119 and Miscellaneous Equipment. This activity is the restart of hotwork in B-Cell to size reduce the remainder of Tank 119 and other miscellaneous pieces of equipment into sizes that can be loaded into a grout container. This activity also includes the process of preparing the containers for shipment from the cell. The specific activities and procedures used are detailed in a table. (2) Load and Ship Low-Level Waste. This activity covers the process of taking a grouted LLW container from B-Cell and loading it into the cask in the REC airlock and Cask Handling Area (CHA) for shipment to the LLBG. The detailed activities and procedures for this part of cell cleanout are included in second table.

2011 Superconductivity Gordon Research Conference (June 5-10, 2011, Waterville Valley Resort, Waterville Valley, New Hampshire)

The 2011 Gordon Research Conference on Superconductivity will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of superconductivity by providing a forum for discussion of the latest experimental and theoretical advances in this field. The conference will bring together experts to address the current challenges in understanding correlated superconductors - from cuprates and pnictides to heavy fermion superconductors. The fundamental mechanisms of superconducting pairing, the underlying explanations for thermodynamic phase diagrams including potential importance of competing phases, the correspondence between these phenomena, and the transport and spectroscopic properties of these materials will be among the themes of the conference. We will also discuss the feasibility of using lessons learned from the study of known superconductors as a guide to the future discovery of novel and higher temperature superconductors. Speakers will be strongly encouraged to present new, unpublished work, which will ensure that discussions evoke and explore new research directions. The participation of young scientists at the graduate student or post-doctoral level will be encouraged by the offering of selected presentations, focused discussions with invited speakers, and poster sessions. In addition, the organizers have earmarked funds to facilitate attendance of members of groups underrepresented in science and engineering.
