Characteristics of transition radiation in the x-ray spectral region

Measurements of soft x-ray production by transition radiation have been performed in a series of experiments at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The results have shown that transition radiation is an intense and predictable source of photons in the soft x-ray energy range. This paper will give a brief review of the general properties of the x-ray distributions generated by these sources. 9 refs., 9 figs.

Dynamic analysis of LOFT reactor flow skirt/core filler assembly for LOCA + SSE (open access)

Dynamic analysis of LOFT reactor flow skirt/core filler assembly for LOCA + SSE

A detailed dynamic analysis of the LOFT reactor core support structures was performed to determine the ability of the flow skirt/core filler and hold-down springs to withstand Loss-of-Coolant Accident (LOCA) plus Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE) loadings. A double-ended offset shear occurring in 15 msec (5 msec break time + msec for offset to occur) in the intact loop at the reactor vessel nozzle provided the basis for LOCA loads. The flow skirt/core filler and lower core support structure separate from the core barrel approximately 0.068 in. as a result of the hot leg LOCA. This small displacement and the resulting impact loads produce stresses in the springs, core barrel, flow skirt/core filler, and shear pins within allowables as specified in Section III of the ASME Code for faulted conditions.

The nuclear structure of deformed odd-odd nuclei: Experimental and theoretical investigations (open access)

The nuclear structure of deformed odd-odd nuclei: Experimental and theoretical investigations

Previous surveys of experimental level structure in deformed odd-odd nuclei have been updated with recent results for the lanthanide and actinide regions. The relative strengths of the effective neutron-proton interaction derived from these data are compared. The predictive power of a semi-empirical model for level structure in deformed odd-odd nuclei is demonstrated. Comparison is made with recent Hartree-Fock calculations of selected nuclei.

Increase in Illicit Fentanyl Overdose Deaths

This report discusses fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 50-100 times more potent than morphine. The steep increase in overdose deaths involving fentanyl is seen as a "new chapter" in the opioid epidemic. Topics covered include the rise of fentanyl overdoses, availability of fentanyl, and policy considerations.

Technical Specification Figure 3-1, PCS temperature vs. pressure

The bases and procedure for plotting LOFT Technical Specification Figure 3-1, PCS Temperature vs. Pressure is presented. The curves define fracture toughness limits for the carbon steel vessels (Reactor vessel, pressurizer and steam generator) in the primary coolant system (PCS). An allowance is included for the lag between measured fluid temperature and metal temperature of the carbon steel components for the heat up situation. As a result the curves are conservative for the cooldown situation. However, no allowances for expected pressure and temperature instrument errors is included in the curves.

Models and theory for precompound angular distributions (open access)

Models and theory for precompound angular distributions

We compare angular distributions calculated by folding nucleon- nucleon scattering kernels, using the theory of Feshbach, Kerman and Koonin, and the systematics of Kalbach, with a wide range of data. The data range from (n,xn) at 14 MeV incident energy to (p,xn) at 160 MeV incident energy. The FKK theory works well with one adjustable parameter, the depth of the nucleon-nucleon interaction potential. The systematics work well when normalized to the hybrid model single differential cross section prediction. The nucleon- nucleon scattering approach seems inadequate. 9 refs., 10 figs.

Haiti Under President Martelly: Current Conditions and Congressional Concerns

This report gives an overview of the current government in Haiti and status of recovery efforts following the 2010 earthquake. The Haitian government and the international donor community are implementing a 10-year recovery plan focusing on territorial, economic, social, and institutional rebuilding. The main priorities for U.S. policy regarding Haiti are to strengthen fragile democratic processes, continue to improve security, and promote economic development. Other concerns include the cost and effectiveness of U.S. aid; protecting human rights; combating narcotics, arms, and human trafficking; and alleviating poverty. Congressional concerns include the pace and effectiveness of reconstruction; respect for human rights, particularly for women; counternarcotics efforts; and security issues.
