A 2-MV multi-beam injector for heavy ion fusion

Construction of a sixteen beam (0.5 A per beam) injector for use in scaled heavy ion fusion experiments is underway at LBL. The machine was designed and partially constructed at LANL. The injector is designed to use carbon arc sources which will provide 25 mA/cm/sup 2/ of extractable current density. The plasma from the arcs is confined electrostatically from drifting into the ion gun before firing the extraction pulse. The acceleration column consists of a set of aperture lenses which both transport the beam and attenuate backstreaming electrons. The acceleration column is mounted inside a 28-inch diameter brazed alumina insulating module. The high voltage for the injector is provided by an inductively loaded and graded Marx generator which resides inside a pressure vessel filled with a 65 psig mixture of 30/percent/ SF/sub 6/ and 70/percent/ N/sub 2/. Data is presented showing the performance of single and multiple carbon arc sources. Measurements show that adequate current density is available. Emittance measurements and efforts to improve emittance and reproducibility are shown. Tests with a 5-tray section of the full 18 tray generator are described showing the evolution of the generator design. 5 refs., 3 figs.

3-D hybrid PIC code to model the tilt mode in FRCs

The results from QN3D are presented. QN3D is a 3-dimensional hybrid particle-in-cell code designed to run efficiently on the Cray-2 Multiprocessor. The chief application has been to the tilt mode instability in FRCs. QN3D accepts as input, the magnetic field, the ion particle density and the ion temperature on a two-dimensional r-z grid. These quantities are interpolated to the rest of the cartesian grid under the assumption of azimuthal symmetry. The particles are initialized with random numbers chosen according to the particle distributions input from the equilibrium code. The runs done here used equilibria computed by EQV, a kinetic equilibrium code.

3-megajoule heavy-ion fusion driver

The initiation of inertial confinement fusion reactions with a heavy ion particle beam has been under intensive study since 1976, and the progress of this study is principally documented in the proceedings of annual workshops held by US National Laboratories. At this time a 3MJ, 150 TW, ion beam is a good choice to initiate microexplosions with energy gain of 100. The Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory has made systems studies based on a Linear Induction Accelerator to meet the beam requirements. The accelerator system, expected performance and cost, and technical problems to be addressed in the near future are discussed.

Kaman Sciences Corporation has designed a 64 kW Concentrating Photovoltaic Applications Test Center (APTEC). The APTEC employs a combined concentrating photovoltaic array in a total energy system application for load sharing the electric and thermal demands of a large computer center with the interfaced electric and natural gas utility. The photovoltaic array is composed of two-axis tracking heliostats of Fresnel lens concentrating, silicon solar cell modules. The modules are cooled with a fluid which transfers heat to a ground coupled heat sink/storage unit for subsequent use in meeting the computer center's thermal load demand. The combined photovoltaic power system shares basic components - a power conditioning unit, batteries and thermal conditioning equipment - with the electric and natural gas utility service, improving the computer center's operating availability time and displacing a portion of the fossil fuel required to power the computer center with solar energy. 800-MWe HTGR-gas-turbine two-loop electric plant

The design and development of the electric plant for the HTGR-Gas Turbine (GT) present a radical departure in accommodating the electrical requirements of the nuclear heat system and the balance of plant. To address not only these requirements but also codes and standards (for power plants and safety-grade systems), the evolution of the design dictates the application of innovative and unique solutions. The complexity of the GT plant and the criteria for nuclear power stations are substantial restraints and limit the availability of alternatives normally present in the development of a design and configuration. Objective of this report is to acquaint the reader with the electric design and to highlight those aspects of the electric plant which are unique. In addition, some insight will be presented on the impact of the plant configuration evolution on electric systems.

This report describes the conceptual design of an 842-MW(t) process heat very high temperature reactor (VHTR) plant having a core outlet temperature of 850/sup 0/C (1562/sup 0/F). The reactor is a variation of the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) power plant concept. The report includes a description of the nuclear heat source (NHS) and of the balance of reactor plant (BORP) requirements. The design of the associated chemical process plant is not covered in this report. The reactor design is similar to a previously reported VHTR design having a 950/sup 0/C (1742/sup 0/F) core outlet temperature.

1983 environmental monitoring report

The environmental levels of radioactivity and other pollutants found in the vicinity of BNL during 1983 are summarized. The amounts of radioactivity and other pollutants released in airborne and liquid effluents from Laboratory facilities to the environment are also indicated. The environmental data includes external radiation levels; radioactivity of air particulates; tritium concentrations; the amounts and concentrations of radioactivity in and the water quality of the stream into which liquid effluents are released; the concentrations of radioactivity in biota from the stream; the concentrations of radioactivity in and the water quality of ground waters underlying the Laboratory; and concentrations of radioactivity in milk samples obtained in the vicinity of the Laboratory. The amounts of radioactivity released in airborne and liquid effluents from laboratory facilities to the environment were within allowable standards as stipulated in DOE Order 5480.1. Other pollutants, such as metals, organic compounds, etc., in the effluents released from the Laboratory were well below federal, state and local standards as applied to site specific conditions. 34 references, 9 figures, 17 tables.

The 1987 Federal field exercise: The DOE experience

The second full-scale field exercise of the Federal Radiological Emergency Response Plan (FRERP) was held at the Zion Nuclear Power Station, Zion, Illinois, in June 1987. The exercise incorporated the annual compliance exercise for the Zion plant and involved the operating utility, Commonwealth Edison Company, the states of Illinois and Wisconsin, local governments, volunteer groups, and representatives from 12 federal agencies. The 3-day exercise was played from many locations in the Zion area; Springfield, Illinois; Madison, Wisconsin; and Washington, DC. Approximately 1000 people participated in the exercise, which used a scenario in which an accident at the plant resulted in the release of radioactive material outside the plant boundary. The US Department of Energy (DOE) had major responsibilities during the planning, playing, and critiquing of the exercise; these functions are outlined in the report. This document describes the DOE participation in the planning and response during the exercise. During a radiological emergency, the FRERP gives DOE the responsibility for coordinating the federal radiological monitoring and assessment activities in support of the states and the cognizant federal agency. Ablative fast pyrolysis of biomass in the entrained-flow cyclonic reactor at SERI

Progress with the entrained flow cyclonic reactor at SERI is detailed. Feedstocks successfully used include wood flour and fairly large sawdust. Preliminary results show that relatively complete vaporization of the biomass is realized and that the yields of tar or gas can be varied over quite a range with trends following first order kinetic concepts.

Abort kicker power supply systems at Fermilab

Over the past several years, Fermilab has been operating with a single turn proton abort system in both the superconducting Tevatron and the conventional Main Ring. The abort kicker power supply for this system discharges a lumped capacitance into the inductive magnet load, causing the beam to enter the abort channel. The characteristics of this current waveform are defined by the requirements of the machine operation. The standard fixed target running mode calls for 12 booster batches of beam which leaves a rotating gap in the beams of approx.1.8 ..mu..s. The current waveform is required to rise to 90% of I/sub max/ in this time to avoid beam loss from partially deflected beam. Aperture limitations in both the accelerator and the abort channel demand that the current in the magnets stays above this 90% I/sub max/ for the 21 ..mu..s needed to ensure all the beam has left the machine. The 25 mm displacement needed to cleanly enter the abort channel at 1 TeV corresponds to a maximum current in each of the 4 modules of approx.20 kA. Similar constraints are needed for the Main Ring and Tevatron antiproton abort systems. A unique feature of this design is the high …

Acceleration to hypervelocities using minimum energy concepts

Experiments have begun at Los Alamos to assess the potential of using spheromaks to transfer energy from large, slow moving metal walls to much smaller, faster moving less massive walls so as to achieve hypervelocities in the 20 to 60 km/s range. A large plate transfers energy to the spheromak during a slow compression. The spheromak then releases this energy in a much shorter time to the small plate, accelerating it to much higher velocity. It has been estimated that velocity gains in excess of 4 (V/sub final/ ..-->.. 20 km/s) can be achieved in a practical single stage experiment.

Accelerator breeders: will they replace liquid metal fast breeders

Investigation of accelerator breeders at Brookhaven National Laboratory indicate that the AB-LWR fuel cycle is economically competitive with the LMFBR fuel cycle. The same can be said about the accelerator breeder-High Temperature Gas Reactor symbiosis. This system appears to be very competitive with the added real advantage of superior safety and proliferation resistance. This discussion would be incomplete if the real competitor to accelerator breeding was not mentioned, namely Fusion Hybrid Breeding (FHB). Fusion Hybrid Breeding is a nearer option than pure fusion, as the breakeven Q value requirements are much more modest. Fusion Hybrid Breeding, if successful and practical, has the potential for highly efficient fissile fuel breeding, leading to cheaper fuel. The system, however, has yet to be demonstrated scientifically and to be shown commercially feasible. This is in contrast with the AB system which is an extension of proven, state-of-the-art technology with implementation possible within twenty years. 25 references, 4 figures, 5 tables.

Accelerator research on MBE-4, an experimental multi-beam induction linac

The multiple beam accelerator MBE-4 is a device for research toward a heavy ion driver for inertial confinement fusion, based on the induction linac concept. Its main goal is proof of the principle of current amplification by acceleration and controlled self-similar beam pulse compression. Into the 16-m long device four beams, each with an initial current of 10 mA are injected from a Marx-driven diode at 200 keV. The current amplification is up to nine-fold, with a final beam energy of about 800 keV in the middle of the bunch. Now that all the apparatus' accelerator sections have been completed, installed and aligned, and its unaccelerated transport properties have been studied, our experimental research has reached the crucial phase of implementing appropriate accelerator schedules that approximate self-similar current-pulse compression. These schedules are established through a close interplay of computations using a one-dimensional simulation code and a manual empirical tuning procedure. In a first approach, with a rather vigorous schedule that uses most of the accelerator modules to their voltage limits, we have determined the limits of our capability for controlled pulse compression, mainly due to waveform shaping of the driving pulse-forming networks. The lattice configuration of the beam combiner and bend system of the proposed Induction Linac System Experiment (ILSE) is described. These subsystems must transport high current ion beams with large momentum variations within a single pulse (..delta..P/P/sub 0/ less than or equal to +-.1), with minimal beam loss or emittance growth. Configurations which are achromatic through first order, including the effect of image fields have been developed. The report deals with background, methodology, and results. The work discussed here is a major milestone in a program supported by NRC to develop and demonstrate application of AE monitoring for continuous surveillance of reactor pressure boundaries to detect and evaluate growing flaws. The subject work demonstrated that anticipated problem areas can be overcome. Work is continuing toward AE monitoring during reactor operation.

Actinide partitioning-transmutation program final report. I. Overall assessment

This report is concerned with an overall assessment of the feasibility of and incentives for partitioning (recovering) long-lived nuclides from fuel reprocessing and fuel refabrication plant radioactive wastes and transmuting them to shorter-lived or stable nuclides by neutron irradiation. The principal class of nuclides considered is the actinides, although a brief analysis is given of the partitioning and transmutation (P-T) of /sup 99/Tc and /sup 129/I. The results obtained in this program permit us to make a comparison of the impacts of waste management with and without actinide recovery and transmutation. Three major conclusions concerning technical feasibility can be drawn from the assessment: (1) actinide P-T is feasible, subject to the acceptability of fuels containing recycle actinides; (2) technetium P-T is feasible if satisfactory partitioning processes can be developed and satisfactory fuels identified (no studies have been made in this area); and (3) iodine P-T is marginally feasible at best because of the low transmutation rates, the high volatility, and the corrosiveness of iodine and iodine compounds. It was concluded on the basis of a very conservative repository risk analysis that there are no safety or cost incentives for actinide P-T. An Adaptive Finite Difference Method for Hyperbolic Systems in OneSpace Dimension

Many problems of physical interest have solutions which are generally quite smooth in a large portion of the region of interest, but have local phenomena such as shocks, discontinuities or large gradients which require much more accurate approximations or finer grids for reasonable accuracy. Examples are atmospheric fronts, ocean currents, and geological discontinuities. In this thesis we develop and partially analyze an adaptive finite difference mesh refinement algorithm for the initial boundary value problem for hyperbolic systems in one space dimension. The method uses clusters of uniform grids which can ''move'' along with pulses or steep gradients appearing in the calculation, and which are superimposed over a uniform coarse grid. Such refinements are created, destroyed, merged, separated, recursively nested or moved based on estimates of the local truncation error. We use a four-way linked tree and sequentially allocated deques (double-ended queues) to perform these operations efficiently. The local truncation error in the interior of the region is estimated using a three-step Richardson extrapolation procedure, which can also be considered a deferred correction method. At the boundaries we employ differences to estimate the error. Our algorithm was implemented using a portable, extensible Fortran preprocessor, to which we added records and pointers. …

Advanced-fuel-cell development. Progress report, October-December 1980

This report describes the fuel cell research and development activities at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) during the period October through December 1980. These efforts have been directed toward (1) developing alternative concepts for components of molten carbonate fuel cells, and (2) improving understanding of component behavior. The principal focus has been on development of ..gamma..-LiAlO/sub 2/ sinters as electrolyte structures. Green bodies were prepared by tape casting and then sintering ..beta..-LiAlO/sub 2/; this has produced ..gamma..-LiAlO/sub 2/ sinters of 69% porosity. In addition, a cathode prepared by sintering lithiated nickel oxide was tested in a 10-cm square cell. Although the bimodal pore distribution in the cathode successfully provided agglomerates flooded with electrolyte and open pores for gas passage, the cathode dimensional variations prevented good contact with the tile, which was stiffer than normal. The tile was prepared using an improved synthesis procedure, which resulted in high-surface-area ..gamma..-LiAlO/sub 2/ particles; but, because the carbonate content was the same as used in previous tests, the tile was less compliant. The cell had excellent seals because dimensional changes associated with in situ cathode reactions were eliminated.
