A Note on the Kinetics of Homogeneous Piles (open access)

A Note on the Kinetics of Homogeneous Piles

Abstract. In investigating stability of a homogeneous pile it has been customary to assume that the production of bubbles follows the production of power instantaneously. Here we investigate the implications of introduction of an intermediate dissolved gas stage under two hypotheses on the formation of bubbles from this dissolved gas. It is seen that this additional stage tends to make the pile unstable.

The reversibility theorem for thin airfoils in subsonic and supersonic flow (open access)

The reversibility theorem for thin airfoils in subsonic and supersonic flow

A method introduced by Munk is extended to prove that the light-curve slope of thin wings in either subsonic flow or supersonic flow is the same when the direction of flight of the wing is reversed. It is also shown that the wing reversal does not change the thickness drag, damping-in-roll parameter or the damping-in-pitch parameter.

Results of flight tests at supersonic speeds to determine the effect of body nose fineness ratio on body and wing drag (open access)

Results of flight tests at supersonic speeds to determine the effect of body nose fineness ratio on body and wing drag

Report presenting flight tests of rocket-powered models at supersonic speeds to determine the effect of nose fineness ratio of winged bodies on total and component drag at high Mach numbers. Wingless models of three nose fineness ratios and winged models of two nose fineness ratios flown through a range of Mach numbers. Results regarding total drag, body drag, and wing drag are provided.

Effect of Screens in Wide-Angle Diffusers (open access)

Effect of Screens in Wide-Angle Diffusers

"An experimental investigation at low airspeeds was made of the filling effect observed when a screen or similar resistance is placed across a diffuser. The filling effect is found to be real in that screens can prevent separation or restore separated flow in diffusers even of extreme divergence and to depend principally on screen location and pressure-drop coefficient of the screen. Results are given for three different diffusers of circular cross section with a variety of screen arrangements. Effects of single screens and multiple screens are shown" (p. 1).

The Solubility of Helium in Tuballoy (open access)

The Solubility of Helium in Tuballoy

This technical report summarizes the work done in attempting to determine the solubility of helium in tuballoy. In general, the method used has been to allow the tuballoy to stand in contact with helium at one atmosphere presume at a fixed temperature for an extended period, then to pump off the excess helium to a low pressure in as short a time as possible (10-6 mm of Hg or less). The system was then closed off and the pressure increase was measured by a suitable gauge as a function of time. The metal was employed in the form of a powder in early measurements, and later as massive metal. The experimental techniques are described in the report.
