PRODUCT ENERGY AND ANGULAR DISTIBUTIONS FROM THE REACTION OP N2+WITH ISOTOPIC HYDROGEN MOLECULES (open access)

PRODUCT ENERGY AND ANGULAR DISTIBUTIONS FROM THE REACTION OP N2+WITH ISOTOPIC HYDROGEN MOLECULES

The energy and angular distributions of N{sub 2}H{sup +} and N{sub 2}D{sup +} formed when a beam of N+2 passes through a scattering cell containing H{sub 2}, D{sub 2}, or HD have been measured at relative kinetic energies ranging from 2.3 to 11.6 eV. From some experiments, intensity contour maps that show the complete product velocity vector distribution in the centre of mass system have been generated. Although backward recoil scattering occurs at all energies, most products are scattered forward in the centre of mass system. The shape and position of the forward scattered product peak are largely consistent with the stripping model modified to account for target motion.

Progress in vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy (open access)

Progress in vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy

A photoelectron spectrometer is built which analyzes for the kinetic energy of the photoionized electrons by retardation techniques. The signal to noise ratio is very high due to the use of a new lamp and increasing the aperture of the system. The resolution is found to be extremely low and the sources of difficulties are discussed and are being eliminated.

Vacuum uv spectroscopy and photochemistry. V. Spectra, ionization, and molecular interactions. Annual report, September 15, 1966-September 14, 1967 (open access)

Vacuum uv spectroscopy and photochemistry. V. Spectra, ionization, and molecular interactions. Annual report, September 15, 1966-September 14, 1967

The first part of the report concerns itself with studies on photoionization, ionizing energy transfer and vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy of olefins. In the second part of the report, semi-empirical methods of calculation have been examined and applied to predict the spectra and ionization potentials of some organo-metallics. The third part of the report contains a basic contribution towards understanding the mechanism of interaction of radiation with matter as well as the interaction between molecules in the condensed phase. The mechanism of the phosphorescence emission is understood and the effects of environmental perturbations is examined. Theoretical and experimental examination of the origin of optical rotation has been carried out and reported.

Effect of S8DR chromium diffusion treatment on the creep rupture properties of processed Hastelloy-N tubing (open access)

Effect of S8DR chromium diffusion treatment on the creep rupture properties of processed Hastelloy-N tubing

Process development personnel have been seeking means of improving the (after thermal exposure) adhesion of the S8DR ceramic coating to chromized Hastelloy N tubing. This effort has led to the incorporation of an elevated temperature chromium diffusion treatment prior to the application of the ceramic coating. This report describes the results of tests performed to ascertain the influence of the additional thermal treatment on the 1400/sup 0/F creep-rupture properties of S8DR tubing.

Contributions to RL-3-0 summary nuclear safety program - Mission 8

The Nuclear Safety Mission consists of seven programs of broad integrated experimental and analytical studies designed to answer long-standing nuclear safety questions and thus assist in providing safeguards against nuclear accidents. It will provide data leading to the technical bases for controlling the consequences of postulated nuclear incidents. Safety standards in the area of nuclear and radiological control are tending towards increased restrictions. As this trend continues it will be necessary for Richland facilities to either show compliance or modify facilities for compliance with new standards.
