Asymmetry in the angular distribution of inclusive A baryons from e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations at. sqrt. s = 29 GeV

The forward-backward asymmetry A expected from the ..gamma.. - Z/sup 0/ interference term in the process e/sup +/e/sup -/ ..-->.. q anti q is observed in the lab production angular distribution of high momentum A baryons. The data were collected with the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP and an integrated luminosity of 256 pb/sup -1/ at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV was used in the analysis. The asymmetry is seen to increase with the fractional energy z = 2E/..sqrt..s of the A due to the decreasing presence of nonleading particles. The value obtained for A baryons with z greater than or equal to 0.3 is A = -0.22 +- 0.08 +- 0.02.

lambda. production in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations at 29 GeV

This paper presents measurements of the inclusive production cross sections of ..lambda.. baryons in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 256 pb/sup -1/ collected with the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP. Comparisons are made to the predictions of the Lund model. The data are well described using a strange diquark suppression parameter, (us/ud)/(s/d), of 0.89 +- 0.10/sub -0.16//sup +0.56/, and the measured ..lambda../sub c/ ..-->.. ..lambda.. + X branching ratio of 23 +- 10%. No polarization is observed in the ..lambda.. decays. 17 refs., 5 figs.

Plated-through hole testing. Final repot

An improved microresistance testing method to measure the thickness of copper plating in plated-through holes of double-sided printed wiring boards is presented. A new probe design, combined with a microprocessor controller, makes it possible for a direct reading tester to provide variables data. Tester design and software programs for the system are included. Results of correlation studies, comparing the improved resistance method to cross-sectional measurements are presented. Limitations on the microresistance test method are discussed.

Stressmeter Placement at Spent Fuel Test in Climax Granite

Vibrating wire stressmeters were installed in the Spent Fuel Facility at the Nevada Test Site. These stressmeters will measure the changes in in situ stress during the five-year spent fuel test. Before installation, laboratory tests were conducted to study reproducibility of placement and to develop a program hopefully to reduce corrosion of the stressmeters while in place at the Spent Fuel Facility. These laboratory tests are discussed along with the installation of the stressmeters at the Spent Fuel Facility.

Health effects models for nuclear power plant accident consequence analysis: Low LET radiation: Part 2, Scientific bases for health effects models

This report provides dose-response models intended to be used in estimating the radiological health effects of nuclear power plant accidents. Models of early and continuing effects, cancers and thyroid nodules, and genetic effects are provided. Two-parameter Weibull hazard functions are recommended for estimating the risks of early and continuing health effects. Three potentially lethal early effects -- the hematopoietic, pulmonary and gastrointestinal syndromes -- are considered. Linear and linear-quadratic models are recommended for estimating cancer risks. Parameters are given for analyzing the risks of seven types of cancer in adults -- leukemia, bone, lung, breast, gastrointestinal, thyroid and ''other''. The category, ''other'' cancers, is intended to reflect the combined risks of multiple myeloma, lymphoma, and cancers of the bladder, kidney, brain, ovary, uterus and cervix. Models of childhood cancers due to in utero exposure are also provided. For most cancers, both incidence and mortality are addressed. Linear and linear-quadratic models are also recommended for assessing genetic risks. Five classes of genetic disease -- dominant, x-linked, aneuploidy, unbalanced translocation and multifactorial diseases --are considered. In addition, the impact of radiation-induced genetic damage on the incidence of peri-implantation embryo losses is discussed. The uncertainty in modeling radiological health risks is addressed by …

Effect of gamma radiation on groundwater chemistry and glass leaching as related to the NNWSI repository site

To address the effect of ionizing radiation on groundwater chemistry and waste form durability, NNWSI is performing an extensive set of experiments as a function of dose rate (2 x 10{sup 5}, 1 x 10{sup 4}, 1 x 10{sup 3}, and 0 rad/h). The results of the tests done at 2 x 10{sup 5} rad/h have been reported, while the 1 x 10{sup 3} and 0 rad/h tests are in progress. This paper presents an overview of the results of the tests done at 1 x 10{sup 4} rad/h and discusses the relevance of these tests to repository conditions. An interpretation of the results relating to the manner by which the glass waste form corrodes is presented elsewhere. A complete discussion of the effect of gamma radiation on groundwater chemistry and waste form durability will be presented when the series of experiments are complete.

PERFORMANCE OF THE LEAD/LIQUID ARGON SHOWER COUNTER SYSTEM OF THE MARK II DETECTOR AT SPEAR

The shower counter system of the SLAC-LBL Mark II detector is a large lead/liquid argon system of the type pioneered by Willis and Radekal; however, it differs in most details and is much larger than other such detectors currently in operation, It contains, for example, 8000 liters of liquid argon and 3000 channels of low noise electronics, which is about eight times the size of the system of Willis et al. in the CERN ISR. This paper reports, with little reference to design, on the operation and performance of the Mark II system during approximately a year and a half of operation at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center's e{sup +}-e{sup -} facility, SPEAR. The design and construction of the system have previously been described and a detailed discussion of all aspects -- design, construction, operation, and performance -- is in preparation.

MEASUREMENTS OF THE PROPERTIES OF D MESON DECAYS

We present a study of the decay properties of charmed D mesons produced near the peak of the {psi}" (3770) resonance in e{sup +}e{sup -} annihilation. Branching fractions for nine Cabibbo-favored and three Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes are presented along with upper limits on one additional Cabibbo-favored and four additional Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes. A study of K{pi}{pi} decay mode Dalitz plots reveals a large quasi-two-body pseudoscalar-vector component for the D{sup 0} decays and an apparent nonuniform population an the Dalitz plot for the D{sup +} decay into K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}. Using tagged events, we measure the charged particle multiplicity and strange particle content of D decays. A measurement of the D{sup +} and D{sup 0} semileptonic decay fractions indicates that the D{sup +} has a significantly longer lifetime than the D{sup 0}.

Density and potential measurements in an intense ion-beam-generated plasma

Neutral beams are created by intense large area ion beams which are neutralized in a gas cell. The interaction of the beam with the gas cell creates a plasma. Such a plasma is studied here. The basic plasma parameters, electron temperature, density, and plasma potential, are measured as a function of beam current and neutral gas pressure. These measurements are compared to a model based on the solution of Poisson's equation. Because of the cylindrical geometry the equation cannot be solved analytically. Details of the numerical method are presented.

Thermodynamics of higher dimensional black holes

We discuss the thermodynamics of higher dimensional black holes with particular emphasis on a new class of spinning black holes which, due to the increased number of Casimir invariants, have additional spin degrees of freedom. In suitable limits, analytic solutions in arbitrary dimensions are presented for their temperature, entropy, and specific heat. In 5 + 1 and 9 + 1 dimensions, more general forms for these quantities are given. It is shown that the specific heat for a higher dimensional black hole is negative definite if it has only one non-zero spin parameter, regardless of the value of this parameter. We also consider equilibrium configurations with both massless particles and massive string modes. 16 refs., 3 figs.

Tritium distribution in the MHTGR

The {sup 3}H production, transport and environmental release from the 350 MW(t) Modular High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor was analyzed. The analysis was performed using a modified TRITGO computer code, plant data base from the Preliminary Safety Information Document and materials property data from the Fuel Design Data Manual, Issue F. The analysis indicates that most of the {sup 3}H produced in the reactor is retained by the fuel particles and the structural graphite elements. The single largest source of {sup 3}H is ternary fission in the fuel particles, of which 95% is retained by the particles. The {sup 3}H released from the core and the {sup 3}H produced by {sup 3}He activation are largely removed by the Helium Purification System. Assuming zero leakage of water from the secondary system, the average predicted {sup 3}H activity in the secondary water of 0.35 {mu}Ci/g is much greater than the allowable activity of 5 pCi/g for direct discharge into the environment. If any of the secondary water has to be discharged, it must be diluted prior to discharge. 10 refs., 9 figs.

A test program is planned in the COMEDIE loop of the Commissariat a l`Energy Atomique (CEA), Grenoble, France, to generate integral test data for the validation of computer codes used to predict fission product transport and core corrosion in the Modular High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (MHTGR). The inpile testing will be performed by the CEA under contract from the US Department of Energy (DOE); the contract will be administered by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Oxidation of 316 stainless steel and other alloys in prototypic GCFR environments

The oxidation behavior of type 316 stainless steel and candidate advanced alloys for the gas-cooled fast reactor (GCFR) is being investigated at General Atomic Company. The test program consists of oxidation tests in prototypic GCFR environments. Two tests have been completed to date and a third test is under way. The first test was performed in an environment containing a hydrogen/water ratio of 10. The oxidation behavior of all the alloys was good to excellent in this environment. Preferential oxidation of chromium was responsible for this behavior. The second test was performed in an environment containing a hydrogen/water ratio of 0.25, where both chromium and iron oxides are thermodynamically stable. Some of the alloys and some of the ribbed type 316 stainless steel test specimens showed unacceptable oxidation resistance in this environment. In the third test, presently under way, two different pretreatment procedures are being used to control the poor oxidation behavior observed in the second test. Early results show some degree of success.

This report is to discuss the marker development for radioactive waste disposal sites. The markers must be designed to last 10,000 years, and place no undue burdens on the future generations. Subsurface marker emplacement test plan (open access)

Subsurface marker emplacement test plan

Current plans propose placing subsurface markers within protective barriers to deter potential human intrusion into disposed radioactive wastes. The subsurface markers would provide warning to the digging intruder should surface markers be removed, destroyed, or ignored. This plan sets forth procedures for testing the survivability of the subsurface markers during construction of the barrier. After the tests described herein are concluded, a decision can be made as to whether subsurface markers will require protection during barrier construction. If protection is required, additional tests will be needed to test the effectiveness of various protective approaches.

Metropolitan and state economic regions (MASTER) model - overview

The Metropolitan and State Economic Regions (MASTER) model is a unique multi-regional economic model designed to forecast regional economic activity and assess the regional economic impacts caused by national and regional economic changes (e.g., interest rate fluctuations, energy price changes, construction and operation of a nuclear waste storage facility, shutdown of major industrial operations). MASTER can be applied to any or all of the 268 Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs) and 48 non-SMSA rest-of-state-areas (ROSAs) in the continental US. The model can also be applied to any or all of the continental US counties and states. This report is divided into four sections: capabilities and applications of the MASTER model, development of the model, model simulation, and validation testing.
