Dispersion of miscible fluids in porous media. Part 2 (open access)

Dispersion of miscible fluids in porous media. Part 2

Miscible-liquid displacements of water/ethanol solutions were conducted in a 2.54-cm-ID column packed with glass beads of 275 to 300 and 25 to 30 mesh with bed heights of 6.35 to 40.8 cm. The viscosity ratio of the resident fluid to displacing fluid was maintained at 0.72 for fluid pairs with favorable density differences. Dispersion coefficients obtained from a two-parameter model increased from approx.3 x 10/sup -5/ to approx.2 x 10/sup -2/ cm/sup 2//s with increasing packing particle size, fluid velocity, and density difference.

Heavy ion clusters in the TDHF approximation. [112 to 384 MeV, cross sections] (open access)

Heavy ion clusters in the TDHF approximation. [112 to 384 MeV, cross sections]

The time-dependent Hartree-Fock method is used to produce time dependent graphical representations of the density contours of the binary cluster in the reactions /sup 14/N(112 MeV) + /sup 12/C, /sup 16/O(384 MeV) + /sup 16/O, and /sup 20/Ne(164 MeV) + /sup 58/Ni. Alpha clustering and multipole shape vibrations are seen. Predictions for d sigma/d..cap omega.., d sigma/dZ/sub f/, and d/sup 2/sigma(E/sub f/)d..cap omega..dE/sub f/vertical/sub z//sub f/ are obtained in the case of /sup 14/N + /sup 12/C and found to agree well with available experimental data. It is concluded that cluster dynamics play an essential role in heavy-ion reactions.

Alfven-ion-cyclotron instability in mirror machines (open access)

Alfven-ion-cyclotron instability in mirror machines

Electrostatic instabilities occurring in mirror-confined ion velocity-distributions have been thoroughly investigated. The electromagnetic instability of greatest concern is the Alfven-ion-cyclotron (AIC) mode. In this work we investigate both convective and absolute growth, both in homogeneous plasma and in finite machines, for a variety of ion velocity-distributions. Good agreement is found with the results from the particle simulation code ''Superlayer''. Quasilinear effects are outlined and a rough criterion found for the importance of Dupree-type broadening.

Identification of Rydberg states in the atomic lanthanides and actinides (open access)

Identification of Rydberg states in the atomic lanthanides and actinides

The study of Rydberg spectra and ionization thresholds of ten lanthanides using several variations of time-resolved resonant multistep techniques is reported. The ionization limits for the lanthanides determined in this way show a systematic dependence on atomic number. A physical model explaining these results is presented. 16 references. (JFP)

Seismic analysis of the nuclear fuel service reprocessing plant at West Valley, N. Y

This report was prepared at the request of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as a part of a license review of the nuclear fuel reprocessing plant operated by Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc., at West Valley, N.Y. The report discusses the approach used by the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in performing an independent seismic analysis of the facility. It includes a description of the facility, our modeling and analysis techniques, failure criteria, results, and conclusions. Two modes of failure are identified and their consequences discussed.

Statistical study of the strength of near-isotropic graphite (open access)

Statistical study of the strength of near-isotropic graphite

More than 2000 tensile and four-point bend tests were made at ambient temperature on specimens from one log of extruded near-isotropic petroleum-coke-based nuclear graphite (Great Lakes Carbon Corporation grade H-451). The mean strengths showed the expected systematic dependence on orientation and location, with axial specimens stronger than radial specimens and material near the edge of the log stronger than material near the centerline. There were additional local fluctuations in strength which, in some cases, corresponded to local variations in density. The coefficient of variation was lower for axial specimens than for radial specimens, and lower for bend specimens than for tensile specimens. The cumulative strength distribution could be fitted equally well by a normal (Gaussian) distribution or by a Weibull distribution. The value of the Weibull modulus, m, was lower for tensile tests than for bend tests, which conflicts with predictions of the Weibull model for the strength of brittle solids. The mean tensile strength of small tensile specimens (volume 724 mm/sup 3/) was higher than that of large tensile specimens (volume 9847 mm/sup 3/) by 3 percent (axial orientation) or 8 percent (radial orientation). These numbers disagree with differences of 28 percent and 38 percent, respectively, predicted by the …

Thermal decomposition and reaction of confined explosives. [TNT, TATB, LX-04, LX-10] (open access)

Thermal decomposition and reaction of confined explosives. [TNT, TATB, LX-04, LX-10]

Some new experiments designed to accurately determine the time interval required to produce a reactive event in confined explosives subjected to temperatures which will cause decomposition are described. Geometry and boundary conditions were both well defined so that these experiments on the rapid thermal decomposition of HE are amenable to predictive modelling. Experiments have been carried out on TNT, TATB and on two plastic-bonded HMX-based high explosives, LX-04 and LX-10. When the results of these experiments are plotted as the logarithm of the time to explosion versus 1/T K (Arrhenius plot), the curves produced are remarkably linear. This is in contradiction to the results obtained by an iterative solution of the Laplace equation for a system with a first order rate heat source. Such calculations produce plots which display considerable curvature. The experiments have also shown that the time to explosion is strongly influenced by the void volume in the containment vessel. Results of the experiments with calculations based on the heat flow equations coupled with first-order models of chemical decomposition are compared. The comparisons demonstrate the need for a more realistic reaction model.
