Laser-error-correction control unit for machine tools (open access)

Laser-error-correction control unit for machine tools

An ultraprecision machining capability is needed for the laser fusion program. For this work, a precision air-bearing spindle has been mounted horizontally on a modified vertical column of a Moore Number 3 measuring machine base located in a development laboratory at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. An open-loop control system previously installed on this machine was inadequate to meet the upcoming requirements since accuracy is limited to 0.5 ..mu..m by the errors in the machine's gears and leadscrew. A new controller was needed that could monitor the actual position of the machine and perform real-time error correction on the programmed tool path. It was necessary that this project: (1) attain an optimum tradeoff between hardware and software; (2) use a modular design for easy maintenance; (3) use a standard NC tape service; (4) drive the x and y axes with a positioning resolution of 5.08 nm and a feedback resolution of 10 nm; (5) drive the x and y axis motors at a velocity of 0.05 cm/sec in the contouring mode and 0.18 cm/sec in the positioning mode; (6) eliminate the possibility of tape-reader errors; and (7) allow editing of the part description data. The work that was done to …

Phase 2 of the Array Automated Assembly Task for the Low Cost Silicon Solar Array Project. Second quarterly report, January 1--March 31, 1978

Development effort has been applied in these areas during the second quarter: effects of back surface field (BSF) region diffusions, application of anti-reflection coatings and photoresist layers to web silicon cells by dipping and cell separation by laser scribing. In addition, consideration has been given to selecting appropriate adhesives for encapsulation of completed modules. A review has been made of the properties of several organic materials as candidates for the adhesives in preparing modules with cell arrays encapsulated between sheets of glass. Room temperature curing materials have been chosen to eliminate the need for a costly and time consuming curing step.

Texas Register, Volume 3, Number 38, Pages 1785-1828, May 23, 1978

A weekly publication, the Texas Register serves as the journal of state agency rulemaking for Texas. Information published in the Texas Register includes proposed, adopted, withdrawn and emergency rule actions, notices of state agency review of agency rules, governor's appointments, attorney general opinions, and miscellaneous documents such as requests for proposals. After adoption, these rulemaking actions are codified into the Texas Administrative Code.

Tritium Breeding in a Fusion--Fission Hybrid Breeder Reactor (open access)

Tritium Breeding in a Fusion--Fission Hybrid Breeder Reactor

In order to construct a D-T fusion-fission hybrid breeder reactor there must be some guarantee that tritium will be available to fuel the fusion reaction. This can be achieved by breeding tritium in the blanket of the reactor. A variety of blanket configurations have been studied with the intent of arriving at a blanket design capable of attaining sizeable values of power and fissile fuel production, and simultaneously assure self-sufficiency in tritium production for the reactor, i.e., a T-breeding ratio greater than 1.0. Using a four group diffusion theory code, a number of possible blanket configurations were studied during the parametric phase of hybrid breeder blanket design. They included tritium breeding zones of natural or enriched lithium metal and natural lithium in dilithium oxide, neutron multiplier zones of uranium and thorium with varying amounts of plutonium, thorium fissile breeding zones (sometimes containing plutonium), and graphite reflector zones. The choice of clad used in the fuel rods has also been found to influence tritium breeding. One of the more promising designs studied combines a tritium breeding ratio of 1.2 with a blanket fissile power of 16 GW(th), and a U-233 production rate of 2.7 tonnes per year.

Computation of the bounce-average code (open access)

Computation of the bounce-average code

The bounce-average computer code simulates the two-dimensional velocity transport of ions in a mirror machine. The code evaluates and bounce-averages the collision operator and sources along the field line. A self-consistent equilibrium magnetic field is also computed using the long-thin approximation. Optionally included are terms that maintain ..mu.., J invariance as the magnetic field changes in time. The assumptions and analysis that form the foundation of the bounce-average code are described. When references can be cited, the required results are merely stated and explained briefly. A listing of the code is appended.

Oceanic distribution and geochemistry of several trace elements at GEOSECS stations

The biogeochemical and physical processes operating in the oceans create substantial geographical and vertical variations in the oceanic distribution of many trace elements. These variations are brought about by diverse mechanisms and involve trace elements of a wide spectrum of physicochemical and biological behavior. Thus, a knowledge of these trace element distributions can help characterize some of the ocean processes in which they participate. (auth)
