Methods for geothermal reservoir detection emphasizing submerged environments (open access)

Methods for geothermal reservoir detection emphasizing submerged environments

This report has been prepared for the California State Lands Commission to aid them in evaluating exploration programs for geothermal reservoirs, particularly in submerged land environments. Three charts show: (1) a logical progression of specific geologic, geochemical, and geophysical exploration techniques for detecting geothermal reservoirs in various geologic environments with emphasis on submerged lands, (2) various exploration techniques which can be used to develop specific information in geothermal areas, and (3) if various techniques will apply to geothermal exploration according to a detailed geologic classification. A narrative in semi-outline form supplements these charts, providing for each technique; a brief description, advantages, disadvantages, special geologic considerations, and specific references. The specific geologic situation will control the exploration criterion to be used for reservoir detection. General guidelines are established which may be of use in evaluating such a program, but the optimum approach will vary with each situation.

LCPT: a program for finding linear canonical transformations. [In MACSYMA]

This article describes a MACSYMA program to compute symbolically a canonical linear transformation between coordinate systems. The difficulties in implementation of this canonical small physics problem are also discussed, along with the implications that may be drawn from such difficulties about widespread MACSYMA usage by the community of computational/theoretical physicists.

MST-80 microprocessor trainer. [Uses INTEL 8080A CPU and support chips housed in attache case]

This trainer is a complete, self-contained microcomputer system housed in a brief case for portability and convenience of use. It utilizes INTEL's 8080A microprocessor and associated support chips. The trainer is designed to allow the student to explore and learn the hardware and software capability of the 8080 microprocessor. It includes a breadboard socket so that experiments can be interfaced to the trainer. This option allows the student to learn both interfacing techniques and programing. A keyboard and numerical display are provided for the student to communicate with the trainer. The keyboard and numerical display can be used with either the octal number system or the hexadecimal number system. 8 figures. (RWR)

Cycling of /sup 36/Cl labeled DDT in natural systems. Technical progress report

Data are reported on the cycling of /sup 36/Cl-labeled DDT in an old field ecosystem. Data are included on the content of DDT retained in samples of soil, plants, invertebrates, and tissues of small mammals. The body burden of DDT in both earthworms and slugs decreased during the six-year period whereas that of isopods increased, indicating that the food chain sources of the compound differ among soil invertebrates. CPS: a continuous-point-source computer code for plume dispersion and deposition calculations

The continuous-point-source computer code calculates concentrations and surface deposition of radioactive and chemical pollutants at distances from 0.1 to 100 km, assuming a Gaussian plume. The basic input is atmospheric stability category and wind speed, but a number of refinements are also included.

Nuclear Heat Source for Cryogenic Refrigerators in Space (open access)

Nuclear Heat Source for Cryogenic Refrigerators in Space

To supply the heat input required by space-borne Vuilleumier refrigerators, a possible design for a reliable Pu-238 radioisotope heat source, based on state-of-the-art technology, is described. The isotope heat source would replace electrical heaters powered by solar panels and batteries, and would be adaptable to existing VM refrigerators without redesign. The heat source contains all necessary safety features, and also a simple thermal control system to permit refrigerator shut-down for indefinite duration. A system for thermal interfacing with the spacecraft, the booster, and ground support is also described. The isotope heaters are compared with solar-electric heaters for the same application, and found to result in very significant weight and size savings.

Fort St. Vrain Proof Test Element Number Two Design, Fabrication, and Assembly Report (open access)

Fort St. Vrain Proof Test Element Number Two Design, Fabrication, and Assembly Report

As part of the overall fuel ulement research and development program for the Public Service Company of Colorado Fort St. Vrain Nuclear Generatlng Station, Unit One Reactor, one or more prototype proof test fuel elements are to be irradiation tested in a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) environment. The design details, fuel characteristics, and assembly of the second proof test element (PTE-2) in a series of five prototype proof test elements built for the Fort St. Vrain Nuclear Generating Station are described. The purpose of the fue1 element irradiation program is to demonstrate that the Fort St. Vrain (FSV) fuel element will meet its design objectives. This will be demonstrated by irradiating a test element(s) in the Peach Bottom HTGR at temperature gradients typical of that expected in FSV to at least one-third of the design lifetime fuel burnup. PTE-2 will achieve the desired total burnup in approximately 300 full- power days of irradiation in Peach Bottom. It should be noted that PTE-2 was built in 1968, prior to the introduction of pitch-bonded, natural-flake graphite matrix which was eventually chosen for use in the FSV initial core.
