Plasma crowbars in cylindrical flux compression experiments

We have done a series of one- and two-dimensional calculations of hard-core Z-pinch flux compression experiments in order to study the effect of a plasma on these systems. These calculations show that including a plasma can reduce the amount of flux lost during the compression. Flux losses to the outer wall of such experiments can be greatly reduced by a plasma conducting sheath which forms along the wall. This conducting sheath consists of a cold, dense high ..beta.., unmagnetized plasma which has enough pressure to balance a large field gradient. Flux which is lost into the center conductor is not effectively stopped by this plasma sheath until late in the implosion, at which time a layer similar to the one formed at the outer wall is created. Two-dimensionl simulations show that flux losses due to arching along the sliding contact of the experiment can be effectively stopped by the formation of a plasma conducting sheath.

This report considers the technical aspects of Sandia Laboratories' Particle Beam Fusion Program and examines the program's initial goals, the progress made to date towards reaching those goals, and the future plans or methods of reaching those original or modified goals. A summary of Sandia Laboratories' effort, which seeks to demonstrate that high voltage pulsed power generated high-current electron or light ion beams can be used to ignite a deuterium or tritium pellet, is provided. A brief review and assessment of the Sandia Pulse Power Program is given. Several critical issues and summaries of the committee members' opinions are discussed.

West Texas geothermal resource assessment. Part II. Preliminary utilization assessment of the Trans-Pecos geothermal resource. Final report

The utilization potential of geothermal resources in Trans-Pecos, Texas was assessed. The potential for both direct use and electric power generation were examined. As with the resource assessment work, the focus was on the Hueco Tanks area in northeastern El Paso County and the Presidio Bolson area in Presidio County. Suitable users of the Hueco Tanks and Presidio Bolson resource areas were identified by matching postulated temperature characteristics of the geothermal resource to the need characteristics of existing users in each resource area. The amount of geothermal energy required and the amount of fossil fuel that geothermal energy would replace were calculated for each of the users identified as suitable. Current data indicate that temperatures in the Hueco Tanks resource area are not high enough for electric power generation, but in at least part of the Presidio Bolson resource area, they may be high enough for electric power generation.

Blanket maintenance by remote means using the cassette blanket approach

Induced radioactivity in the blanket and other parts of a fusion reactor close to the plasma zone will dictate remote assembly, disassembly, and maintenance procedures. Time will be of the essence in these procedures. They must be practicable and certain. This paper discusses the reduction of a complicated Tokamak reactor to a simpler assembly via the use of a vacuum building in which to house the reactor and the introduction in this new model of cassette blanket modules. The cassettes significantly simplify remote handling.

Heating of field-reversed plasma rings estimated with two scaling models

Scaling calculations are presented of the one temperature heating of a field-reversed plasma ring. Two sharp-boundary models of the ring are considered: the long thin approximation and a pinch model. Isobaric, adiabatic, and isovolumetric cases are considered, corresponding to various ways of heating the plasma in a real experiment by using neutral beams, or by raising the magnetic field. It is found that the shape of the plasma changes markedly with heating. The least sensitive shape change (as a function of temperature) is found for the isovolumetric heating case, which can be achieved by combining neutral beam heating with compression. The complications introduced by this heating problem suggest that it is desirable, if possible, to create a field reversed ring which is already quite hot, rather than cold.

High temperature thermodynamics and vaporization of the zirconium--niobium--oxygen system

The vaporization behavior of the Zr--Nb--O system was studied by means of successive vaporization, Knudsen effusion-target collection experiments, and mass spectrometric analysis of the vapors effusing from a Knudsen crucible. The successive vaporization experiments were performed on two ternary samples in open crucibles. X-ray powder diffraction patterns of the residues and x-ray fluorescence analysis of the condensates and residues indicated the preferential vaporization of niobium-containing species with the composition of the residue subsequently becoming closer to that of congruently vaporizing ZrO/sub 2-x/. The Knudsen effusion-target collection experiments were employed on two samples, pure NbO/sub 2/(s) and a two-phase ZrO/sub 2/--NbO/sub 2/ mixture, in order to obtain information on the activity of NbO/sub 2/ in the two-phase mixture. Second law enthalpies and entropies of sublimation as well as third law enthalpies were obtained for both systems. The vaporization behaviors of five compositions in the Zr--Nb--O system, NbO/sub 2/, NbO, a ZrO/sub 2/--NbO/sub 2/ two-phase mixture, Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/, and Zr/sub 6/Nb/sub 2/O/sub 17/, were investigated. Above Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ and the fully oxidized Zr/sub 6/Nb/sub 2/O/sub 17/ oxygen is preferentially lost; over NbO/sub 2/, the two-phase ZrO/sub 2/--NbO/sub 2/ system, and NbO the principal gaseous species is NbO/sub 2/.

Microstructural stability of 21-6-9 stainless steel

Two experiments were designed to better define parameters for thermomechanical processing of 21-6-9 stainless steel. This steel is one of the nitrogen-strengthened chromium, manganese, and nickel austenitic stainless steels having mechanical properties that can be improved by a combination of plastic deformation and heat treatments. By heat-treating coupons, the time-temperature relationship of the precipitate phase, and the solutionizing, recrystallizing, and stress-relieving temperature ranges in 21-6-9 were established. Secondly, mechanical properties and microstructure as a function of percent deformation and stress-relieving temperature are reported.

Multichannel magnetic analyzer for pulsed plasma sources

We constructed, calibrated, and used a simple multichannel magnetic analyzer for pulsed plasma-target production studies. With time-of-flight resolution of velocity, the channel signals unfolded to yield a measurement of each of the present ion-energy-distribution functions. Measurements made with a narrow-slit, high-gain electron multiplier detector allowed clearly resolved identification of each major ion species. However, because of the uncertainty of secondary-emission detection efficiency for high-q ions, we made all absolute signal measurements with a wider entrance slit and an array of Faraday-cup detectors. The latter arrangement was calibrated with an H/sup +/ beam of known adjustable energy. We describe how this instrument can determine N/sup +/ to N/sup 7 +/ and H/sup +/ ion-distribution functions for a CO/sub 2/ laser pulse incident on an NH/sub 3/ pellet.

Atmospheric attenuation of solar radiation

The attenuation of solar radiation by the atmosphere between the heliostat and receiver of a Central Receiver solar energy system has been computed for a number of atmospheric conditions and tower-heliostat distances. The most important atmospheric variable is found to be the atmospheric aerosol content. No dependence of atmospheric water vapor is found and only a weak dependence on solar zenith angle. For a 500 m heliostat-tower distance two to four percent reductions are expected under typical desert conditions (50 to 120 km visibility). The reduction is approximately linear with heliostat-tower distance. A representative value of the attenuation coefficient is 0.051 km/sup -1/.

Rydberg series in the lanthanides and actinides observed by stepwise laser excitation

The techniques of stepwise laser excitation were applied to obtain Ryberg series in the lanthanides and in uranium. The methods employed circumvent many of the experimental difficulties inherent in conventional absorption spectrosopy of these heavy atoms with very complex spectra. The Rydberg series observed have allowed the determination of accurate ionization limits. The values in eV are: Ce, 5.5387(4);Nd, 5.5250(6); Sm, 5.6437(10); Eu, 5.6704(3); Gd, 6.1502(6); Tb, 5.8639(6); Dy, 5.9390(6); Ho, 6.0216(6); Er 6.1077(6); U, 6.1941(5). A comparison of the f/sup n/s/sup 2/-f/sup n/s ionization limits as a function of n with theoretical calculations is made.

Time-dependent propagation of high-energy laser beams through the atmosphere: II

Various factors that can affect thermal blooming in stagnation zones are examined, including stagnation-zone motion, longitudinal air motion in the neighborhood of the stagnation zone, and the effects of scenario noncoplanarity. Of these effects, only the last offers any reasonable hope of reducing the strong thermal blooming that normally accompanies stagnation zones; in particular, noncoplanarity should benefit multipulse more than cw beams. The methods of treating nonhorizontal winds hydrodynamically for cw and multipulse steady-state sources are discussed. Pulse ''self-blooming'' in the triangular pulse approximation is discussed in the context of both single and multipulse propagation. It is shown that self-blooming and multipulse blooming cannot be treated independently.
