A Miniature Beta Scintillation Detector (open access)

A Miniature Beta Scintillation Detector

The development of a miniature probe was desired for measuring approximate single nuclide beta dose rate in solution and in various animal organs. This probe designed for biological experiments, was to have maximum possible sensitivity to detect low levels of nuclide concentrations. The desired dimensions of the light pipe were to be approximately one-fourth-inch diameter with lengths of three to twelve inches.

Radioactive Contamination in Liquid Waste Discharged to Ground at the Separations Facilities Through December, 1964 (open access)

Radioactive Contamination in Liquid Waste Discharged to Ground at the Separations Facilities Through December, 1964

This document summarizes the amounts of radioactive contamination discharged to ground from chemical separations and laboratory facilities through December, 1964. Detailed data for individual disposal sites are presented on a month-to-month basis for the period of January through December, 1964. Previous publications of this series are listed in the bibliography and may be referred to for specific information on measurements and radioactivity totals prior to December, 1964. Several changes in crib nomenclature were made during 1964. These changes are noted on the individual tables so reference may be made to them in previous reports. Tables I and II list the major disposal sites in the separation facilities, total volume of waste discharged to each location, and the gross amounts of plutonium and beta particle emitters discharged to ground since startup. Tables III through XXIV present this same data on a monthly basis for cribs still in use, and also include information on the source of the waste stream and the settling facility if used. Isotopic data are included for disposal sites from which the waste was analyzed for specific contaminants. Estimates of contamination and volumes discharged to swamps are also included in Tables XXV and XXVI.

Redox Dissolver Off-Gas Monitor, Calibration and Test (open access)

Redox Dissolver Off-Gas Monitor, Calibration and Test

In order to prevent dangerous concentrations of combustible gases such as hydrogen and ammonia in Redox dissolvers, a continuous analysis of the off-gases is needed. Hydrogen is evolved from most fuel element dissolution processes now used or planned for use at Redox. Ammonia is also released from ammonium fluoride dissolution of zirconium and caustic dissolution of aluminum cladding. Oxides of nitrogen and hydrogen are formed during nitric acid dissolution of uranium or plutonium-aluminum alloys. Since no fixed ratio exists between the concentrations of any two of these gases, the determination of combustible gases in complex mixtures is not possible with a single bulk property analyzer.

Stimulation of the corneal blinking reflex by ionizing radiation (open access)

Stimulation of the corneal blinking reflex by ionizing radiation

Accelerated alpha particles from the Berkeley heavy-ion linear accelerator were used in a series of experiments designed to elucidate the conditions by which radiation can stimulate or modify nerve action in mammals. Single millisecond pulses in excess of 40,000 radsor pulse trains of less than 1 sec duration elicited the corneal blinking reflex when delivered to the cornea of unanesthetized rabbits. The lowest threshold dose was observed when the Bragg ionization peak was placed at 140 {mu} depth.
