Effects of inlet icing on performance of axial-flow turbojet engine in natural icing conditions

A flight investigation in natural icing conditions was conducted to determine the effect of inlet ice formations on the performance of axial-flow turbojet engines. The results are presented for icing conditions ranging from a liquid-water content of 0.1 to 0.9 gram per cubic meter and water-droplet size from 10 to 27 microns at ambient-air temperature from 13 to 26 degrees F. The data show time histories of jet thrust, air flow, tail-pipe temperature, compressor efficiency, and icing parameters for each icing encounter. The effect of inlet-guide-vane icing was isolated and shown to account for approximately one-half the total reduction in performance caused by inlet icing.

This methodology comprises the derivation of a qualitative, approximate equation expressing the relative performance of the various parts of a system, followed by an examination of this equation in order to locate the limiting features of the system. THREE NEW DELAYED ALPHA EMITTERS OF LOW MASS

Two new positron active isotopes, B{sup 8} and Na{sup 20}, have been found to decay to excited states of Be{sup 8} and Ne{sup 20}, which in turn decay 'instantaneously' by alpha emission. Their half-lives are 0.65 {+-} 0.1 sec. and 1/4 sec. respectively. N{sup 12} is also found to have a low energy positron group which leads to an {alpha}-unstable excited state in C{sup 12}. The masses of B{sup 8} and Na{sup 20} are 8.027 and 20.015 respectively. B{sup 8} decays by a 13.7 {+-} 0.3 Mev positron, through the same excited state of Be{sup 8} as does Li{sup 8}. Estimates of the energies of the excited state in C{sup 12} and Ne{sup 20} are made.

A MODIFIED PILE OSCILLATOR FOR NEUTRON CROSS-SECTION MEASUREMENTS

A pile oscillator was designed, constructed, and operated at the Battelle Research Reactor. This pile oscillator cycles a specimen and a standard in the same container through an annular ion chamber located in the thermal column. This almost simultaneous oscillation of the standard and specimen eliminates errors caused by power drifts or fluctuations. The use of a continuous graphite rod for the container or carrier reduces undesirable scattering effects of the carrier. The oscillator was calibrated using the cross section of gold foil as a standard. Effects of geometry on measured cross sections were investigated. In general, larger samples gave higher apparent crosssection values than thin foils of comparable cross sections. Most measurements to date were made on powdered-metal samples. Values obtained at Battelle are presented and compared with values from Oak Ridge on similar samples. At present the sensitivity of the oscillator is limited to total absorption cross sections on the order of 1 mm/sup 2/ for accurate crosssection data. The limit of the accuracy of the measurements is approximately the accuracy to which the absorption cross section of the standard sample is known. Available knowledge of precision limits in S.S. accountability measurements and/or calculations by reactor and chemical processing groups is surveyed and summarized. Experienee in comparisons of reactor (production and research) calculations vs. chemical plant accountability measurements is also reported. A general tentative conclusion is that available precisions ( plus or minus 0.54 to plus or minus 0.78%) in chemical plant measurements (bulk and analytical) for fissionable material accountability is superior to the variable precision ( plus or minus 1.0 to 1l.0%) possible by calculations (nuclear and/or engineering) of power reactor systems; however, with operation and empirical experience (e.g., after two or three core loadings), it is believed that calculations for given reactors can attain acceptable precisions, e,g., less than plus or minus 1.0%. It may be proposed that fuel payments be made as follows: 90% of fuel value based on reactor calculations, an additional 5% based on dissolver analyses, and final settlement based on chemical plant material balance (product plus loss analyses).
