The demand plot has a 5-set, modified pump decay curve; it shows that 20,000 gpm emergency flow would be required within 80 seconds of complete pump power failure. Bases for the demand curve are constant bulk inlet temperature of 2 C, constant bulk outlet temperature of 95 C, K-3 I&E fuel elements, and initial reactor flow of 188,000 gpm.

Increased production from deliberate discharge cycling

Considerable production gains might be attained if each reactor discharged its entire flattened region during one scheduled outage instead of utilizing several outages for this purpose. Several of the older reactors are now discharging a high percentage of their flattened zones in a single outage and could be put into this type of operation with relatively little difficulty. Production gains may be possible through better flattening efficiency, a more favorable rupture rate effect, fewer non-equilibrium losses, higher conversion ratio, and more efficient usage of outage work. Since this document is written Primarily from the Operational Physics standpoint, some gains and pitfalls which must be evaluated by other affected groups will only be mentioned here as possibilities. The purpose of this document is simply to point out the potential gains in flattening efficiency from this method. Potential gains from improved fuel performance have been described in another document.

PROBLEMS IN ACCOUNTABILITY MEASUREMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE INTERIM CHEMICAL PROCESSING PROGRAM

Available knowledge of precision limits in S.S. accountability measurements and/or calculations by reactor and chemical processing groups is surveyed and summarized. Experienee in comparisons of reactor (production and research) calculations vs. chemical plant accountability measurements is also reported. A general tentative conclusion is that available precisions ( plus or minus 0.54 to plus or minus 0.78%) in chemical plant measurements (bulk and analytical) for fissionable material accountability is superior to the variable precision ( plus or minus 1.0 to 1l.0%) possible by calculations (nuclear and/or engineering) of power reactor systems; however, with operation and empirical experience (e.g., after two or three core loadings), it is believed that calculations for given reactors can attain acceptable precisions, e,g., less than plus or minus 1.0%. It may be proposed that fuel payments be made as follows: 90% of fuel value based on reactor calculations, an additional 5% based on dissolver analyses, and final settlement based on chemical plant material balance (product plus loss analyses). A new furnace designed to maintain the complete lower chamber (molten salt+ freeboard) above melt temperature is to eliminate past experiences of salt solidification on the wall, heads, and in or on the internal process lines. External pipe runs are autoresistance heated to allow melting and drain back of salt plugs. The upper chamber serves as a gas de-entrainment and solids precipitation device to retain most of the entrained salt and condensable fluorides in the 100 to 400 deg C range. (auth)

HEAT TRANSFER TO A BOILING LIQUID MECHANISM AND CORRELATIONS. Progress Report No. 7 (58-40)

Various heat transfer mechanisms which have been previously proposed are analyzed in the light of recent experiments. Evidence is presented in favor of a liquid-vapor exchange mechanism and against the widely accepted "micro-convection" mechanism. The vapor-liquid exchange rnechanism is shown to explain the insensltivity of boiling heat flux to the level of subcooling. A "Reynolds Analogy" for nucleate boiling is presented in some detail. A procedure is given for calculating the superheat at which the liquid bulk velocity ceases to contribute to the heat flux. An expression for the growth of a vapor bubble in a highly superheated liquid is deduced. A method is presented which allows the deduction of correlations for nucleate boiling which give the dependence of heat flux on superheat and system pressure. Two such correlations are presented and results are compared with experiment. It is shown that one correlation yields the heat flux for different liquids varying from water to mercury, without necessitating any change in constant or exponent of the correlation. (auth)

Report presenting testing of hemispherical nose shapes of titanium, stainless steel coated with aluminum oxide, and uncoated stainless steel with lithium hydride and magnesium as internal coolants. The models were tested in the ceramic-heated jet at a Mach number of 2, a stagnation temperature of 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and a stagnation pressure of 105 lb/sq. in. abs. Lithium hydride offers significant cooling for the materials while magnesium shows a slight cooling.

METALLURGICAL EXAMINATION OF VALVE TRIM FROM HRP DUMP VALVE TEST LOOP

An investigation of trim from the HRP Dump Valve Test Loop revealed that performance improved with increasing poppet hardness. From this it was hypothesized that deformation of softer poppets increased the poppet-seat contact area, thus reducing the closing pressure. The deformation areas of a number of poppets were measured and the closing pressures calculated. A plot of closing pressure against leak rate showed a fair correlation and tends to support the hypothesis. (auth)

Memorandum presenting force-oscillation tests made in the 8-foot transonic pressure tunnel to investigate some effects of an overhang-type aerodynamic balance and of a flow spoiler on the dynamic hinge-moment characteristics of a full-span flap-type rudder on a 5-percent-thick, swept vertical fin of low aspect ratio. Test results how that the aerodynamic damping moment on the plain rudder becomes unstable near a Mach number of 0.975 and remains unstable to the maximum speed of the tests.

Tests were performed at a variety of Mach numbers, reduced frequencies, and tunnel stagnation pressures, but at a constant oscillating amplitude. Results regarding aerodynamic damping, aerodynamic spring, control effectiveness, and effect of Reynolds number are provided.
