The DD and TD Cross Sections

The total cross sections of the reactions DDp, DDn, TD at 10 kev to 10 Mev are estimated from a review of the experimental data up to January 1951. Maxwell averages for DDp and TD computed from these estimates are given, together with some fitted analytic expressions provided for machine use. A collection of the identifiable earlier estimates is also included for reference and for comparison with the new figures. For relative order of magnitude purposes, cross sections and the derived Maxwell averages are given down to 50 ev using the theoretical Gamow slopes for the extrapolation. Gamow plots for the derived cross sections above l0 kev arc also given. Much of the primary experimental data exists in the form of thick target yields and we find the most uncertain factor in converting these thick targets yields into cross sections is the magnitude of the D/sub 2/O stopping cross section. The particular D/sub 2/O stopping cross section relation used in this derivation together with some of the earlier stopping cross sections are given. Thick target yields are included for both DD and TD on D/sub 2/ targets, at 0.01 to 1 Mev, experimental values being supplemented by calculated values.

The Decontamination of Uranium from Fission Products by the Use of the Uranyl Oxalate Precipitation Reaction

Abstract: "Decontamination factors of the order of 10-4 were obtained for Beta and Gamma emitters present as fission products when uranium was precipitated from 50 mC activity level solutions as uranyl oxalate under normal uranium yield conditions for three cycles (~60%). Factors of the order of 10-3 were obtained by the use of this reaction with similar solutions under relatively high uranium yield conditions for three cycles (~90%). The uranium peroxide precipitation reaction proved to be of no value on such solutions, yielding decontamination factors of only 17.1 Beta emitters and 1.2 for Gamma emitters for three cycles."

Frequency Components of a Step Function and a Sinusoid

Fourier analyses are made on two functions. The first is a step function forward from periodic samples of a sinusoid. If the frequency of the sinusoid is less than one-half of the sampling frequency, it is shown that the step function has no frequency components less than one-half of the sampling frequency other than that of phase, and duration with respect to the interval of the analysis. It is shown that the insertion of a blank space in the period of analysis reduces greatly the uncertainty of the amplitude of the initial sinusoid as estimated from the results of the Fourier analysis. The results of the analyses are useful in the design and evaluation of certain analog data-analyzing systems.

Ultrasonically Bond Testing Hanford Fuel Elements

Ultrasonic equipment has been developed for nondestructive testing of Hanford fuel elements. The ultrasonic method has replaced the Frost Test for bonding layer inspection in the Hanford canning line, and provides more accurate and reliable results at lower cost. The method has also been adopted to the testing of new fuel elements for which no other method is available.

The measurements reported here are companion measurements to those reported earlier in HW-63585. The only significant difference between the measurements is that 1.8 w/o enrichment UO2 fuel was used for the first set, and 2.6 w/o enrichment UO2 fuel was used for the measurements described in this report. The new results will be presented graphically, and for completeness, the details of the measurement will be included here as well as in HW-63585.

Four capsules containing Al-1.65 w/o Pu and Al-12 w/o Si-1.65 w/o Pu were charged into the MTR. These capsules will be irradiated to a burnup of 80-100% of the plutonium atoms to determine the stability of the material at high exposures. An additional sixteen capsules containing 5 to 20 w/o Pu in Al and Al-Si have been prepared. Eight are awaiting reactor space and should be charged soon. The remaining eight are being recanned to increase the end gap between the core and the can. Also four capsules containing high density UO2-PuO2 pellets canned in Zircaloy are awaiting assignment of reactor space.

A 19-rod Zircaloy-clad half-length PRTR spike element successfully irradiated to high plutonium burnout at full power in the ETR shoved partial bonding of the core and cladding. Unsatisfactory autoclave films on the Zircaloy cladding of the PRTR Al-Pu fuel elements are delaying final assembly of the first 30 clusters. Further conditioning of the autoclaves and the availability of permanent etching facilities are expected to correct the present difficulties.

Experiments On Alfven-Wave Propagation

This paper reports an extension of previous experimental work with Alfven waves. We consider hydromagnetic waves propagating in a cylindrical plasma in a uniform axial magnetic field. The copper tube is filled with highly ionized plasma by an electrically driven switch-on ionizing wave. After the tube is filled with plasma, a hydromagnetic wave is induced by a radial current flow from the small molybdenum electrode to the copper tube. The force produced by this radial current together with the static axial magnetic field displaces the plasma in the azimuthal direction, and a transverse wave is propagated in the axial direction, along magnetic field lines. The transient magnetic field associated with the wave is also in the azimuthal direction.

The Recovery of Fission Product Rare Earth Sulfates from Purex LWW

A research and development program aimed at devising processes for the economical recovery of the potentially valuable long-lived fission products from Purex waste has been under wat at Hanford for several years. When this work has begun, the concentrated waste was primarily a nitric acid solution (6 to 10 M HNO3) containing the fission products and relatively small concentrations of iron, sulfate, and other corrosion products. Flowsheets based on classical separation schemes and rather similar to processes used by the Isotopes Division at the AEC's Oak Ridge operation served to separate the desired fission products from one another and from the corrosion products (1,2,3).These separation schemes employed careful step-wise pH adjustment to precipitate first the iron and then to separate the desired fission products from one another. The flowsheets were demonstrated on a pilot-plant scale with full-level plant waste. However, since the earlier work was complete, plant operations have been modified....

Cation Exchange in Acetone-Water-Hydrochloric Acid

Abstract: Distribution coefficients have been measured for the partition of metal ions between cation exchange resin and acetone-water-hydrochloric acid solutions. the differences in distribution coefficients of metal ions are greater in acetone-water media than in aqueous media of the same hydrochloric acid concentration. Using distribution coefficient data, conditions for column separations of mixtures can be selected. Column separations of metal ion mixtures can be effected by eluting with acetone-water-hydrochloric acid solutions of different compositions. Successful separations of a number of mixtures are reported.

Spectrophotometric Determination of Perchlorate

Technical report. Form Abstract : "Perchlorate is extracted from aqueous solution by n-butyronitrile as ferrous 1,10-phenanthroline perchlorate. The amount of perchlorate is calculated from spectrophotometric measurement of the absorbance of the extract. Moderate to large amounts of chloride, sulfate, or nitrate cause little or no interference. Chlorate is slightly extracted but the interference can be corrected."
