The Convention on Nuclear Safety - A Fact Sheet

Until the catastrophic accident with the former Soviet Union's Chernobyl nuclear power plant showed that radioactivity from a major nuclear accident could reach neighboring nations, nuclear safety was held to be an exclusively sovereign responsibility of each nation. Now it is recognized that a nuclear accident in one state can release radioactivity dangerous to another. As a result, many now view international cooperation as one way to help to assure safe operation of each nation's civil nuclear power stations.

TWRS HLW interim storage facility search and evaluation (open access)

TWRS HLW interim storage facility search and evaluation

The purpose of this study was to identify and provide an evaluation of interim storage facilities and potential facility locations for the vitrified high-level waste (HLW) from the Phase I demonstration plant and Phase II production plant. In addition, interim storage facilities for solidified separated radionuclides (Cesium and Technetium) generated during pretreatment of Phase I Low-Level Waste Vitrification Plant feed was evaluated.

Plate stamping of masterplates for the Tile-Cal hadronic calorimetric for ATLAS detector at CERN (open access)

Plate stamping of masterplates for the Tile-Cal hadronic calorimetric for ATLAS detector at CERN

Various methods have been explored for the fabrication of the large trapezoidal plates used in the construction of the Tile-Cal hadronic calorimeter for ATLAS. The options include die stamping, laser cutting, waterjet cutting, plasma arc cutting, and a combination of machining and laser cutting. Very early in the program, the Argonne group began investigating the possibility of die stamping the master plates. At that time it was felt that two dies would be necessary to achieve the accuracy required. Quotations were received for dies for both the master and spacer plates. Concern was expressed by many members of the collaboration that due to the very precise tolerances required, die stamping, using standard dies, would not be adequate. Fine blanking techniques were felt to be adequate, but were cost prohibitive. Two methods were finally used for the initial cutting of prototype plates, laser cutting and die stamping. Only the die stamping, will be reviewed here.

A molecular dynamics study of the {Sigma}11 <1{bar 1}0>/(113)(133) grain boundary in Al and Al-Cu (open access)

A molecular dynamics study of the {Sigma}11 <1{bar 1}0>/(113)(133) grain boundary in Al and Al-Cu

We present results of molecular dynamics simulation studies of Cu segregation to the {Sigma}11{l_angle}1{bar 1}0{r_angle}/(113)(113) grain boundary (GB) in Al. Simulations were performed with EAM potentials for Al and Al-Cu. Results predict that Cu atoms tend to order along either side of the interface even in the pure symmetrical tilt boundary, forming alternating chains along the {l_angle}{bar 3}{bar 3}2{r_angle} direction. Nucleation of the chains is driven by a change in the local atomic level stress induced by the pre-existing Cu atoms at the GB.

Safety assessment for proposed pump mixing operations to mitigate episodic gas releases in tank 241-101-SY: Hanford Site, Richland, Washington (open access)

Safety assessment for proposed pump mixing operations to mitigate episodic gas releases in tank 241-101-SY: Hanford Site, Richland, Washington

This safety assessment addresses each of the elements required for the proposed action to remove a slurry distributor and to install, operate, and remove a mixing pump in Tank 241-SY-101, which is located within the Hanford Site, Richland, Washington. The proposed action is required as part of an ongoing evaluation of various mitigation concepts developed to eliminate episodic gas releases that result in hydrogen concentrations in the tank dome space that exceed the lower flammability limit.

Tank 41-H salt level fill history 1985 to 1987 (open access)

Tank 41-H salt level fill history 1985 to 1987

The fill rate of the evaporator drop waste tank (i.e., salt tank) at Savannah River Site contained in the Waste Management Technology (WMT) monthly data record is based upon a simple formula that apportioned 10 percent of the evaporator output concentrate to the salt fill volume. Periodically, the liquid level of the salt tank would be decanted below the salt level surface and a visual inspection of the salt profile would be accomplished. The salt volume of the drop tank would then be corrected, if necessary, based upon the visual elevation of the salt formation. This correction can erroneously indicate an excess amount of salt fill occurred in a short time period. This report established the correct fill history for Tank 41H.
