Fusion-fission hybrid studies in the United States

Systems and conceptual design studies have been carried out on the following three hybrid types: (1) The fission-suppressed hybrid, which maximizes fissile material produced (Pu or /sup 233/U) per unit of total nuclear power by suppressing the fission process and multiplying neutrons by (n,2n) reactions in materials like beryllium. (2) The fast-fission hybrid, which maximizes fissile material produced per unit of fusion power by maximizing fission of /sup 238/U (Pu is produced) in which twice the fissile atoms per unit of fusion power (but only a third per unit of nuclear power) are made. (3) The power hybrid, which amplifies power in the blanket for power production but does not produce fuel to sell. All three types must sell electrical power to be economical.

Progress in the ICF Program at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Experiments using the harmonically converted Nd:glass lasers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (Novette with 2 to 10 kJ at 0.26 and 0.53 micron and Nova with 30 to 80 kJ at 0.35 and 0.53 micron) have demonstrated favorable coupling of laser light to fusion targets. The coupling of short-wavelength laser light to these plasmas is now well understood and is primarily collisional in nature, in contrast to previous experiments at 1.06 microns and 10 microns, where the coupling was collective. Increased absorption and conversion to x-rays and decreased production of suprathermal electrons was measured with decreasing wavelength. Stimulated Raman scattering was identified as the primary source of the suprathermal electrons. The collisionality of the laser target coupling can be controlled by the proper selection of laser wavelength and target material. The coupling improvements led directly to the demonstration of higher-density ablative implosions of DT fusion fuel. Experiments on Novette demonstrated a better than 100-fold compression of the DT fuel with two-sided illumination. The Nova laser is extending laser-plasma studies to plasmas several times larger than those used on Novette. Recent experiments have produced a yield of over 10/sup 13/ neutrons. Scalar potential for charge distributions with ellipsoidal symmetry

Calculation of the electrostatic scalar potential in ellipsoidal coordinates is outlined. The ellipsoidal coordinate system is described, and the Laplace equation is discussed for this system. Special charge distributions having ellipsoidal symmetry, and therefore most easily treated in ellipsoidal coordinates, are assumed and their scalar potentials calculated, including the ellipsoidal shell, two-dimensional and three-dimensional Gaussian charge distribution, and two-dimensional uniform distribution. 2 refs. Suppressed-fission ICF hybrid reactor

A suppressed-fission ICF hybrid reactor has been designed to maximize the production of /sup 233/U. In this design, Be is used as a neutron multiplier. An annular array of Be columns surrounds the fusion pulse inside the reaction chember. The Be columns consist of short cylinders of Be joined together with steel snap rings. Vertical holes in the Be carry liquid lithium coolant and steel-clad thorium fuel pins. The lithium coolant is supplied at the top of the chamber, traverses through the Be columns and exits at the bottom. The columns are attached to top and bottom plates in such a way as to tolerate radiation-induced swelling and the vibrations resulting from each fusion pulse. A thin (10 cm) liquid Li fall region protects the Be columns from direct exposure to the X-rays and debris emitted by the fuel capsule. A neutronics study of this design indicates that the specific production of /sup 233/U fuel is increased by operating at relatively large thorium volume fractions. A Device for Precision Dimensional Measurement of Superconducting Cable

A need for continuous sampling of the dimensions of superconducting cable has lead to the development of a machine for that purpose. This device measures average thickness, width, and keystone angle for a wide variety of cable sizes while under the mechanical loading anticipated in the final coil structure. Linear dimensions can be measured to {plus minus}0.0001 in. and angle to {plus minus}0. 01{degree}. Cable can be measured with and without insulation. Loading is variable up to 25 ksi. This device has applications in epoxy free coil winding where the cable dimensions must be well understood before coil winding in order to predict the size of the finished coil package. As a diagnostic device, it has application in the cable making process to help understand causes for subtle inconsistencies in cable dimensions. A possible quality control application exists. Current cable quality control requires destructive techniques with very small samplings, usually two samples for 5000 ft of cable. We have evaluated device performance by repeated measurements of lengths of SSC cable. 7 figs.

Estimate of the Pbar Yields for the CERN ACOL Project

For a check of the yield estimates expected for the new ACOL target station, calculations have been performed for the CERN parameters using the relatively, simple semi-analytical techniques outlined in pbar note 449. These calculations correspond to operation with a 15 cm long, 1 cm radius lithium lens at 750 T/m gradient, and a 6.5 cm tungsten production target. Comparison with the current calculated yield number for the AA with the present target station configuration (10**7 pbars per 10**13 protons, into dp/p = 1.5%) indicates an increase of a factor of 15 using the normal ACOL parameters (dp/p = 6%, a(transverse acceptance) = 240 pi mm-mrad). As explained in the report, the above lens parameters are not optimized, that is, increases in lens gradient and/or radius will result in an increase in yield, providing the corresponding changes in focal distance, beam line matching, etc. are made.

Inertial fusion power for space applications

More than thirty-seven design concepts have been proposed for terrestrial ICF power plants. The design space is large because of the many allowable driver and reaction chamber combinations. These design studies have illustrated advantages of ICF power plants over other sources in lower impact on the environment, high safety, and almost no dependence on consumables like fuel. The fact that, once built, a 1000 MW/sub e/ ICF power plant would require only 240 kg of deuterium and from 770 to 9260 kg of lithium to run for five years (at 70% capacity factor) makes it potentially attractive for space power also. However, the designs proposed to date have emphasized features that would make the plant attractive for terrestrial applications, where economics, efficiency, and environmental considerations dominate. The resulting plants are large and contain many very heavy components that would not be at attractive for space applications. In this paper, we evaluate alternative ICF driver and reactor technologies using space application criteria and also discuss how some of those technologies can be altered to produce smaller, lighter fusion power sources for space.

New limits on residual RTL eta from Linac wakefields

Effects of Linac transverse wakefields are combined with residual eta and partially compressed bunches (presently the SLC design) to place much tighter, current dependent limits on residual eta and eta'. The limits are comparable to or exceed those needed at the SLC final focus. These limits will be difficult to maintain due to present experimental resolution.

This presentation will describe CR-39 plastic as a personnel neutron dosimeter. Recent research at LLNL and elsewhere has resulted in the development of a dosimetry system that is superior to any personnel neutron dosimeter previously available. The author describes the features of the dosimetry system and the new etching procedures and techniques in detail. Most of the research was done at the LLNL and has been supported as a part of the DOE Neutron Dosimetry Upgrade Program. 10 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.
