Heavy-fermion, kondo, spin glass-like, and antiferromagnetic behavior in (Ce,Gd)Al/sub 3/ (open access)

Heavy-fermion, kondo, spin glass-like, and antiferromagnetic behavior in (Ce,Gd)Al/sub 3/

We have found that Ce/sub 1-x/Gd/sub x/Al/sub 3/ with x = 0.23 is a heavy-fermion system which undergoes a spin glass transition. The amplitude of the peak in the susceptibility that characterizes the spin glass transition passes through a sharp maximum at x = 0.5. For x = 0.635 and 0.77 the system undergoes a spin glass-like transition at 100/sup 0/K and an antiferromagnetic transition at 20/sup 0/K.

The control of powerful neutral beams (open access)

The control of powerful neutral beams

While significant progress has been made in the development of neutral beams for the heating and sustaining of plasmas in large fusion experiments, the control of such devices has largely been a matter of hardware interlocks and operator experience. The need for computer-assisted control becomes more evident, however, with the initiation of multi-beamline experiments. This paper describes a software system that incorporates simple mathematical models coupled to Kalman filters for control of the high power (6 to 8 MW) beams currently under development at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's Neutral Beam Engineering Test Facility. Among the principal features of the system are: reduction of a large number of operator variables to just a few (usually one or two); the ability to describe most of the major neutral beams in use and under development; a foundation resting on statistical data analysis and control system principles rather than rules-of-thumb.

Fission gas retention and axial expansion of irradiated metallic fuel (open access)

Fission gas retention and axial expansion of irradiated metallic fuel

Out-of-reactor experiments utilizing direct electrical heating and infrared heating techniques were performed on irradiated metallic fuel. The results indicate accelerated expansion can occur during thermal transients and that the accelerated expansion is driven by retained fission gases. The results also demonstrate gas retention and, hence, expansion behavior is a function of axial position within the pin.
