Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) conducted an evaluation of the safeguards and security systems at the Critical Mass Laboratory (CML) in February 1985, to identify appropriate upgrading actions necessary to ensure that effective and efficient systems consistent with DOE-RL policies, procedures, and site priorities are in place. Since that evaluation, there have been changes in Patrol contingency philosophy, response tactics, and distribution of manpower. Because of these changes, and at the request of DOE-RL, PNL has re-evaluated the safeguards and security systems in place at CML.

Impact, friction, and electrostatic discharge sensitivities of energetic materials (explosives and pyrotechnics) used or manufactured at Mound were tested by the ''one-shot'' method. The Bruceton statistical method was used to derive 50% initiation levels, and the results were compared. The materials tested include: PETN, HMX, Plastic Bonded Explosives (PBX), CP, TATB, RX26BB, RX26BH, barium styphnate, LX-15, LX-16, Ti/KClO/sub 4/, TiH/sub 0.65//KClO/sub 4/, TiH/sub 1.65//KClO/sub 4/, Fe/KClO/sub 4/, TiH/sub 1.75//B/CaCrO/sub 4/, Ti/B/CaCrO/sub 4/, B/CaCrO/sub 4/, TiH/sub 0.65//2B, TiH/sub 0.65//3B, 2Ti/B, TiH/sub 1.67//2B, Ti/2B, TiH/sub 1/67//3B, Ti/B, and Ti/3B. Some samples were investigated for aging effects, physical variables, and the effect of manufacturing paramters on sensitivities. The results show that in both friction and impact tests, CP and barium styphnate are the most sensitive; TiH/sub 1.65/KClO/sub 4/, LX-15, TATB and its related materials are the least sensitive; and other materials such as PETN and HMX are in the mid-range. In the electrostatic tests of Ti-based pyrotechnics, a decrease of sensitivity with increasing hydrogen concentration was observed. 20 refs., 12 figs., 7 tabs.

After a brief introduction to the present state of art of nuclear beta-decay studies in astrophysics, we report our recent work on the long-standing /sup 99/Tc problem. Having combined a detailed study of the recurrent He-shell thermal-pulse, third dredge-up episodes in a 2.25 M/sub solar/ star and an s-process network calculation, we show that a substantial amount of /sup 99/Tc can be produced by the s-process and can survive to be dredged up to the stellar surface. We stress that the factual observation of /sup 99/Tc at the surface of certain stars does not necessarily preclude the /sup 22/Ne(..cap alpha..,n)/sup 25/Mg reaction from remaining as the neutron source for the s-process. The calculated surface abundances of /sup 99/Tc and elements with neighboring atomic numbers are compared with observations. 43 refs., 5 figs.

Gamma rays emitted during yrast transitions from compound nuclei are detected with a 4..pi.. multielement gamma ray detector system. Both total pulse height (H) and coincidence fold data (k) are obtained for each event. Results presented include entry state distribution states, k and H projections for some of these distributions, and k and H as a function of spin of the yrast transition. 5 figs. (DWL)

The traditional approach used to study high energy beam propagation relies on the frozen field approximation. A minor modification of the frozen field approximation yields the set of equations applied to the analysis of the hose instability. These models are constrasted with the Darwin field approximation. A statement is made of the Darwin model equations relevant to the analysis of the hose instability.

We report results of simulations of stimulated Brillouin backscatter in which we see the second spatial harmonic of the ion density fluctuation and compare with linear, fluid theory. We also describe examples of the competition between Raman and Brillouin backscatter. 21 refs., 3 figs.

We have searched for the production of likesign dilepton events (nu/sub ..mu../ + Ne ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/ + e/sup -/ + ...) in a wideband neutrino beam at FNAL using the 15' bubble chamber. We observe no signal above the background arising from conventional sources. We set 90% confidence level upper limits for the production rates of (nu/sub ..mu../ + Ne ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/ + e/sup -/ + ...)/(nu/sub ..mu../ + Ne ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/ + ...) less than or equal to 8 * 10/sup -5/ and (nu/sub ..mu../ + Ne ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/ + e/sup -/ + ...)/(nu/sub ..mu../ + Ne ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/ + e/sup +/ + ...) less than or equal to 6 * 10/sup -2/.

The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) is building an accumulator ring to store antiprotons for high energy physics proton-antiproton collisions in the Tevatron accelerator. The accumulator ring, approximately 474 m in circumference, consists of many quadrupole and dipole magnets connected with stainless steel vacuum chambers for beam circulation. The vacuum pressure required is in the low 10{sup -10} Torr range. To reach this pressure, the vacuum chambers are baked at 300 C each time they have been opened to atmospheric pressure. The critical problem is to bake the chambers in the magnets at high temperature without overheating the laminated magnets. Some of the magnets are 5 m long with very restrictive space for the heaters and insulation. An average space of only 7.5 mm around the chambers is available. In this space a heating system has been designed and tested to heat the chamber to 300 C and allow a maximum temperature of 65 C next to the magnet components. This was accomplished by using a heating blanket completely covered with water cooled copper heat sink jacket to protect the magnet from the high temperatures.
