Microseismic monitoring of the Sweet Lake, Louisiana, MagmaGulf-Technadril/D.O.E./Amoco Fee No. 1 Geopressured/Geothermal Energy Test Well Program: Final Report, 20 May 1980-31 May 1984

The overall objective of the project was to study the seismic effects of fluid withdrawal from deep reservoirs and its subsequent reinjection closer to the surface. This effort included the design and installation of a hardware system and development of a study approach to monitor dynamic deformation in the Gulf Coast environment. Over the long term, insight gained into the ground deformation process (specifically ground subsidence) may potentially allow the integration of observations of individual phenomena into predictive tools for future use in ground subsidence studies. The value of a seismic monitoring network as a predictive tool can only be evaluated by an integrated program to study ground and instrument performance with time. Integrating extended real time monitoring of potential seismic precursors to significant displacements may represent the first integrated study of subsidence undertaken in the Gulf Coast region.

Acceleration of polarized protons at the AGS

Spin physics in the past has provided an acid test of many models and theories and over the last decade has revealed new and unexpected phenomena to confront present day theories. This work received great impetus from the experiments at the ZGS, where for the first time multi-GeV polarized beams became available. This, in conjunction with polarized targets, allowed the complete specification of the initial quantum states in high energy proton-proton interactions and led to many startling new results. Although spin effects were important at the previously measured lower energies, practically all theorists felt that spin effects would become negligible at higher energies. Instead, the ZGS results showed in many cases even larger effects than those observed at lower energies. By the time the ZGS was shut down in 1979, high energy polarized proton projects were planned for KEK in Japan, SATURNE in France, and the AGS at Brookhaven. At present, serious thought is being given to high energy polarized proton beams at Fermilab, CERN, and indeed in planning for the Superconducting Super Collider. Geothermal Evaluation of The Hosston Formation Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas Phase II Report

This report summarizes the results of a phased program to test the geothermal characteristics of the Hosston Formation at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The geothermal resource evaluation was made possible through drilling and preliminary testing of a large diameter well, Lackland AFB No.1, at the south portion of the base. Phase I of the program had 3 major components: (1) compilation and interpretation of surface and subsurface geologic data to site the well; (2) design of the well; and (3) permitting the well. Phase II consisted of well drilling and preliminary development. The goal of the program was to identify water temperature, water quality, and productivity characteristics of the Hosston aquifer, which preliminary studies suggested might be favorable for direct applications on the base. Results reported herein suggest that heat pumps or other engineering alternatives might be needed for such applications. Results of the well drilling give data on water productivity, quality and temperature. Air-lift testing shows that, although the well does not flow to surface, good artesian pressure exists. Water quality appears acceptable, with about 2200 parts per million total dissolved solids. Equilibrated reservoir temperatures appear to be slightly less than 108 F (42 C).

Hadron physics

Is all hadronic physics ultimately describable by QCD. Certainly, many disparate phenomena can be understood within the QCD framework. Also certainly, there are important questions which are open, both theoretically (little guidance, as yet) and experimentally, regarding confinement. Are there dibaryons, baryonium, glueballs. In addition, there are experimental results which at present do not have an explanation. This talk, after a short section on QCD successes and difficulties, will emphasize two experimental topics which have recent results - glueball spectroscopy and exclusive reactions at large momentum transfer. Both are experimentally accessible in the AGS/LAMPF II/AGS II/TRIUMF II/SIN II energy domain.

Reaction of the Topopah Spring tuff with J-13 well water at 90{sup 0}C and 150{sup 0}C

As part of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations Project, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is responsible for the design and testing of waste packages suitable for use in the Topopah Spring tuff at Yucca Mountain. Definition of the physical and chemical environment of the waste package is part of that task. This report describes a series of hydrothermal experiments using crushed tuff from the Topopah Spring Member and natural groundwater from Well J-13. The purpose of these experiments is to define the changes in water chemistry that would result from temperature changes caused by emplacement of high-level nuclear waste in a repository in the Topopah Spring tuff. Experiments were conducted at 90{sup 0}C and at 150{sup 0}C in Teflon-lined reaction vessels. Results are given for four rock-to-water ratios at 90{sup 0}C and for reaction times up to 72 days. Data for 150{sup 0}C cover reaction times up to 64 days and four rock-to-water ratios. The composition of evaporite deposits contained in the pores of surface outcrop rock material used in these experiments is determined and for two of the data sets rock material was pretreated to remove this calishe-type material. Overview of geochemical modeling needs for nuclear waste management

Research needs include, but are not limited to: measurement of basic thermodynamic data at elevated temperatures for species identified by modelers as potentially important; evaluation of substances which control or limit precipitation and/or nucleation kinetics; sorption studies specifically designed to provide data needed for modeling. This includes the rate of sorption, desorption, and the characterization of the solid and aqueous phases; site-mixing models and thermodynamic data for secondary minerals that form solid solutions; the development of standard techniques for measuring rate laws for precipitation and dissolution kinetics; and measurement of rate laws describing redox kinetics, dissolution, and precipitation involving aqueous species and solid phases of interest to geochemical modelers.

Uranium Density and Enrichment in Fuel Tubes Determined from 232U and 235U Y-Activities

Gamma spectroscopy is used to determine 235U density and enrichment in U-Al fuel tubes containing recycled fuel. A collimated HPGe Y-detector views the tube surface, such that U-Al disk volumes of 6.35 mm diameter and approximately 1.0 mm thickness are examined. The Y-activities from 232U and 235U, along with the tube design parameters, are used to deduce the attenuation-corrected results. Respective density and enrichment variations of less than 1 percent and less than 0.6e percent were measurable with 2000 sec counting time per tube location. Such measurements are useful for certifying tube quality and characterizing problems associated with blending the U-Al alloy.

As part of the overall Solvent Refined Coal (SRC-1) project baseline being prepared by International Coal Refining Company (ICRC), the RUST Engineering Company is providing necessary input for the Outside Battery Limits (OSBL) Facilities. The project baseline is comprised of: design baseline - technical definition of work; schedule baseline - detailed and management level 1 schedules; and cost baseline - estimates and cost/manpower plan. The design baseline (technical definition) for the OSBL Facilities has been completed and is presented in Volumes I, II, III, IV, V and VI. The OSBL technical definition is based on, and compatible with, the ICRC defined statement of work, design basis memorandum, master project procedures, process and mechanical design criteria, and baseline guidance documents. The design basis memorandum is included in Paragraph 1.3 of Volume I. The baseline design data is presented in 6 volumes. Volume I contains the introduction section and utility systems data through steam and feedwater. Analyzing power measurements in high-P/sub perpendicular to//sup 2/ p-p elastic scattering

The analyzing power in 28 GeV/c proton-proton elastic scattering was measured at P/sub perpendicular to//sup 2/ = 5.95 and 6.56 (GEV/c)/sup 2/ y/sub g/ a polarized proton target and an unpolarized proton beam at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS. Results indicate that the analyzing power, A, is rising sharply with P/sub perpendicular to//sup 2/. Previous measurements of the analyzing power, A, in p + p ..-->.. p + p suggested a rise in A at large-P/sub perpendicular to//sup 2/, but the statistical uncertainty in the highest point at P/sub perpendicular to//sup 2/ = 5.95 (GeV/c)/sup 2/ made it impossible to determine the magnitude of the increase. In an effort to clarify this situation, we made new measurements of A at P/sub perpendicular to//sup 2/ = 5.95 and 6.56 (GeV/c)/sup 2/. An unpolarized beam of typically 5 x 10/sup 10/ 28 GeV/c protons from the AGS at Brookhaven National Laboratory was incident upon the University of Michigan polarized proton target. This target contains irradiated ammonia beads cooled to 0.5/sup 0/K by a /sup 3/He-/sup 4/He evaporation refrigerator, in a 2.5 T magnetic field. Coating of the SLAC klystron windows

Secondary emission is not likely to be suppressed in thin films. Accumulated charges leak away with two time constants. The fast time constant should be short compared to the pulse duration, and the slow time constant should be short compared to the time between pulses. The Joule heating may be prohibitive in reaching adequate charge removal. The joule heating may be reduced by films which conduct little in the direction of the electric field and much better in the perpendicular direction.

Comparison of the total neutral energy spectra of. cap alpha cap alpha. , dd and pp interactions at the ISR

The total neutral energy spectra, E/sub TOT//sup 0/ = ..sigma../sub i/ epsilon/sub i//sup 0/, have been measured in the central region of ..cap alpha cap alpha.., dd and pp interactions at ..sqrt..s/sub NN/ = 31 GeV with an electromagnetic calorimeter covering 2..pi.. in azimuth. The data were collected in the light-ion run at the CERN ISR during August 1983. The cross section ratio of the ..cap alpha cap alpha.. to the pp interactions increases rapidly with E/TOT//sup 0/ from 7 to 10/sup 5/ in the range 1.5 < E/sub TOT//sup 0/ < 19 GeV. The data are compared with a simple model of simultaneous multiple nucleon-nucleon collisions.

lambda. N effective interaction

A combination of theoretical estimates, based on a ..lambda..N potential model, and phenomenological analysis of hypernuclear data is used to determine a set of four P/sub N/s/sub ..lambda../ two-body matrix elements which characterize the spin dependence of the ..lambda..N interaction in the p shell. The central spin-spin and the ..lambda.. spin-orbit matrix elements are most strongly constrained by existing data. The spin dependence is weak in the sense that s/sub ..lambda../ doublet splittings are predicted to be of order 100 keV except for the special case of /sub ..lambda..//sup 7/Li where the central spin-spin interaction dominates and the ground-state doublet separation is likely to be about 600 keV. The results of recent (K/sup -/, ..pi../sup -/..gamma..) experiments at the Brookhaven AGS are interpreted in terms of the ..lambda..N effective interaction.
