Direct utilization of geothermal energy for space and water heating at Marlin, Texas. Final report

The Torbett-Hutchings-Smith Memorial Hospital geothermal heating project, which is one of nineteen direct-use geothermal projects funded principally by DOE, is documented. The five-year project encompassed a broad range of technical, institutional, and economic activities including: resource and environmental assessments; well drilling and completion; system design, construction, and monitoring; economic analyses; public awareness programs; materials testing; and environmental monitoring. Some of the project conclusions are that: (1) the 155/sup 0/F Central Texas geothermal resource can support additional geothermal development; (2) private-sector economic incentives currently exist, especially for profit-making organizations, to develop and use this geothermal resource; (3) potential uses for this geothermal resource include water and space heating, poultry dressing, natural cheese making, fruit and vegetable dehydrating, soft-drink bottling, synthetic-rubber manufacturing, and furniture manufacturing; (4) high maintenance costs arising from the geofluid's scaling and corrosion tendencies can be avoided through proper analysis and design; (5) a production system which uses a variable-frequency drive system to control production rate is an attractive means of conserving parasitic pumping power, controlling production rate to match heating demand, conserving the geothermal resource, and minimizing environmental impacts.

This report summarizes research during 1982 in the Division of Biological and Medical Research, Argonne National Laboratory. Studies in Carcinogenesis address mechanisms of chemical and radiation carcinogenesis including the processes of tumor initiation and promotion. The studies employ rat liver and mouse skin models as well as human rodent cell culture systems. The use of liposomes for metal mobilization is also explored. Low Level Radiation studies include delineation of the hematopoietic and other responses of dogs to continuous low level gamma irradiation, comparison of lifetime effects in mice of low level neutron and gamma irradiation, and study of the genetic effects of high LET radiation. Molecular Biology research develops two-dimensional electrophoresis systems for diagnosis and detection of cancer and other diseases. Fundamental structural and biophysical investigations of immunoglobulins and other key proteins are included, as are studies of cell growth, and of molecular and cellular effects of solar uv light. Research in Toxicology uses cellular, physiological, whole animal, and chronobiological end points and chemical separations to elucidate mechanisms and evaluate hazards of coal conversion by-products, actinides, and toxic metals. The final sections cover support facilities, educational activities, seminars, staff talks, staff, and funding agencies.

Dose-projection considerations for emergency conditions at nuclear power plants

The purpose of this report is to review the problems and issues associated with making environmental radiation-dose projections during emergencies at nuclear power plants. The review is divided into three areas: source-term development, characterization of atmospheric dispersion and selection of appropriate dispersion models, and development of dosimetry calculations for determining thyroid dose and whole-body dose for ground-level and elevated releases. A discussion of uncertainties associated with these areas is also provided.

e+e- collisions in the multi-TeV region

A leading role in the elucidation of the Standard Model during the last few years has been played by e+e- colliding beam experiments. The e+e- discoveries have been made possible by the cleanliness of the experimental conditions and the ability to tune the centre-of-mass energy with precision to the desired value, thus avoiding less interesting background events. We expect history to repeat itself in the next step of elucidating physics beyond the Standard Model. Just as past e+e- machines such as SPEAR, DORIS and CESR have uncovered physics inaccessible to hadron-hadron collisions with a centre-of-mass energy several times higher, so we feel that future e+e- colliders will provide information that could not be duplicated by hadron colliders with much larger centre-of-mass energies. There is a general consensus that the next interesting energy range is likely to be in the TeV range. It is in this energy range that whatever physics provides and stabilizes the masses of the intermediate vector bosons must be revealed. Unravelling this mass generation mechanism takes us beyond the gauge principle of the Standard Model which has been so triumphantly vindicated in recent months. Ecotoxicity of materials from integrated two-stage liquefaction and Exxon Donor Solvent processes

Coal-derived materials from two coal conversion processes were screened for potential ecological toxicity. We examined the toxicity of materials from different engineering or process options to an aquatic invertebrate and also related potential hazard to relative concentration, composition, and stability of water soluble components. For materials tested from the Integrated Two-Stage Liquefaction (ITSL) process, only the LC finer (LCF) 650/sup 0/F distillate was highly soluble in water at 20/sup 0/C. The LCF feed and Total Liquid Product (TLP) were not in liquid state at 20/sup 0/C and were relatively insoluble in water. Relative hazard to daphnids from ITSL materials was as follows: LCF 650/sup 0/F distillate greater than or equal to LCF feed greater than or equal to TLP. For Exxon Donor Solvent (EDS) materials, process solvent produced in the bottoms recycle mode was more soluble in water than once-through process solvent and, hence, slightly more acutely toxic to daphnids. When compared to other coal liquids or petroleum products, the ITSL or EDS liquids were intermediate in toxicity; relative hazard ranged from 1/7 to 1/13 of the Solvent Refined Coal (SRC)-II distillable blend, but was several times greater than the relative hazard for No. 2 diesel fuel oil or Prudhoe …

This report documents the waste package performance requirements and geologic and waste form data bases used in developing the conceptual designs for waste packages for salt, tuff, and basalt geologies. Evidence for a secondary doorway state in A = 13 nuclei from unpolarized and polarized capture measurements

Cross section, angular distribution and analyzing power mesurements show structure and interference effects in neutron, proton and deuteron capture into the A = 13 system at about 20 MeV excitation energy. By introducing a secondary doorway state at 20.6 MeV with a 0.5 MeV width it is possible to explain the shape of the /sup 12/(n,..gamma../sub 0/)/sup 13/C and /sup 12/C(p,..gamma../sub 0/)/sup 13/N cross sections as well as the fluctuations observed in the experimental angular distributions and analyzing powers.

Experience with a high order programming language on the development of the Nova distributed control system

This paper explores the impact of an HOL on the development of the distributed computer control system for Nova laser fusion facility. As the world's most powerful glass laser, Nova will generate 150 trillion watt pulses of infrared light focused onto fusion targets a few millimeters in diameter. It will perform experiments designed to explore the feasibility of fusion as an energy source of the future. Nova will utilize fifty microcomputers and four VAX-11/780's in a distributed process control computer system architecture.

A Test Plan Report has been prepared which details all the tests proposed for the 1983 operational season. One of these tests evaluates the thermal recycle mode which would be employed in a commercial configuration. In this mode, the condensate stream en route to the resaturator is passed back to the first gas cooler. The gas to liquid heat exchanger heats the condensate prior to resaturation. The analytical system simulation model, developed under this program, has been used to assess the operation of this mode and to select baseline conditions for the proposed test. Analysis of the data and results from tests conducted during the 1982 season has continued. In specific application, particularly power generation, the need exists to accommodate unanticipated contingency conditions. The response of the gasifier to such an occurrence was tested in 1982. Validation of the component models for the gasifier and the acid gas removal system has continued. Several enhancements to the gasifier model in the devolatilization zone are being added to increase accuracy. Improvements in the representation of the CO/sub 2/ absorption rate in the acid gas removal system model are being incorporated. Experimental hydrogen-fueled automotive engine design data-base project. Volume 1. Executive summary report

A preliminary hydrogen-fueled automotive piston engine design data-base now exists as a result of a research project at the University of Miami. The effort, which is overviewed here, encompassed the testing of 19 different configurations of an appropriately-modified, 1.6-liter displacement, light-duty automotive piston engine. The design data base includes engine performance and exhaust emissions over the entire load range, generally at a fixed speed (1800 rpm) and best efficiency spark timing. This range was sometimes limited by intake manifold backfiring and lean-limit restrictions; however, effective measures were demonstrated for obviating these problems. High efficiency, competitive specific power, and low emissions were conclusively demonstrated.

Experimental studies of a large heterogeneous LMFBR benchmark core, ZPPR-13A

The ZPPR-13 program provides basic physics information for testing calculations of radially heterogeneous cores of about 700 MWe size. ZPPR-13 is part of the JUPITER cooperative program between Japan and the US. The results are presented of measurements and analysis for the first assembly, ZPPR-13A. These are the first data for heterogeneous cores of this size available in the US and complement results from ZPPR-9, a conventional LMFBR of similar size.

Extended overpower transient testing of oxide pins in EBR-II

Understanding of the behavior of oxide fuel and blanket pins during slow transients with ramps between 0.1 and 10%/s is of importance because of the higher likelihood of such operational transient events. Compared to faster transients for which a fair amount of knowledge exists through testing in TREAT, there is also some concern of whether the oxide pins are particularly vulnerable to slower transients. For these reasons, a cooperative program between the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the Japanese Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation (PNC) was launched to conduct operational transient testing (OTT) on oxide pins in EBR-II. A total of eleven tests is included in this OTT program. The status of the five extended-overpower-transient tests on preirradiated EBR-II pins is the subject of this paper.

Field test of two high-pressure, direct-contact downhole steam generators. Volume I. Air/diesel system

As a part of the Project DEEP STEAM to develop technology to more efficiently utilize steam for the recovery of heavy oil from deep reservoirs, a field test of a downhole steam generator (DSG) was performed. The DSG burned No. 2 diesel fuel in air and was a direct-contact, high pressure device which mixed the steam with the combustion products and injected the resulting mixture directly into the oil reservoir. The objectives of the test program included demonstration of long-term operation of a DSG, development of operational methods, assessment of the effects of the steam/combustion gases on the reservoir and comparison of this air/diesel DSG with an adjacent oxygen/diesel direct contact generator. Downhole operation of the air/diesel DSG was started in June 1981 and was terminated in late February 1982. During this period two units were placed downhole with the first operating for about 20 days. It was removed, the support systems were slightly modified, and the second one was operated for 106 days. During this latter interval the generator operated for 70% of the time with surface air compressor problems the primary source of the down time. A tunnel burner for burning wood chips has been installed and tested at a school building in Durham, NC. The test revealed many problems which did not exist while testing a prototype in laboratories. Controls were found to work reliably. A business plan was developed and is appended. (LEW)

Fractured rock modeling in the National Waste Terminal Storage Program: a review of requirements and status

Generalized computer codes capable of forming the basis for numerical models of fractured rock masses are being used within the NWTS program. Little additional development of these codes is considered justifiable, except in the area of representation of discrete fractures. On the other hand, model preparation requires definition of medium-specific constitutive descriptions and site characteristics and is therefore legitimately conducted by each of the media-oriented projects within the National Waste Terminal Storage program. However, it is essential that a uniform approach to the role of numerical modeling be adopted, including agreement upon the contribution of modeling to the design and licensing process and the need for, and means of, model qualification for particular purposes. This report discusses the role of numerical modeling, reviews the capabilities of several computer codes that are being used to support design or performance assessment, and proposes a framework for future numerical modeling activities within the NWTS program.
