Large-angle two-photon exclusive channels in quantum chromodynamics (open access)

Large-angle two-photon exclusive channels in quantum chromodynamics

Detailed leading order QCD predictions are given for the scaling, angular, and helicity dependence of the reactions ..gamma gamma.. ..-->.. M anti M (M = ..pi.., K, rho, etc.) at large momentum transfer. In addition to providing a basic test of QCD at short distances, measurements can be used to determine the process-independent meson distribution amplitudes phi/sub M/(x,Q). Other related two-photon channels such as ..gamma gamma.. ..-->.. ..gamma..rho, ..gamma..*..gamma.. ..-->.. ..pi../sup 0/, eta/sup 0/, eta' and eta/sub c/ ..-->.. ..gamma gamma.. are also discussed. The existence of a fixed Regge singularity at J = 0 which couples to ..gamma..rho ..-->.. ..gamma..rho in the t-channel but not ..gamma pi.. ..-->.. ..gamma pi.. is also proved.

Two-photon physics as a probe of hadron dynamics (open access)

Two-photon physics as a probe of hadron dynamics

Two-photon collisions provide an ideal laboratory for testing many features of quantum chromodynamics, especially the interplay between the vector-meson-dominated and point-like hadronic interactions of the photon. A number of QCD applications are discussed, including: jet and single-particle production at large transverse momentum; the photon structure function and its relationship to the ..gamma.. ..-->.. q anti q wave function; and the possible role of gluonium states in the ..gamma gamma.. ..-->.. rho/sup 0/rho/sup 0/ channel. Evidence that even low momentum transfer photon-hadron interactions are sensitive to the point-like ..gamma.. ..-->.. q anti q coupling is discussed.

LBL EBIS Program

It has been decided to increase the energy range of the LBL 88-Inch Cyclotron by constructing an advanced ion source for installation on the existing axial injection system. The type of advanced ion source chosen is the Electron Beam Ion Source. The energy range will be increased to 40 MeV/nucleon for the lighter heavy ions and with development to over 20 MeV/nucleon at mass 100. Besides the 88-inch Cyclotron, present accelerators at LBL include the SuperHILAC, with beam energy up to 8.5 MeV/A, and the Bevalac, which will provide beams from 40 MeV/A to 2 GeV/A at all masses upon completion of the current Uranium Beams line item. Initial ion source design and design of the test bench are described.

Geohydrology of Enewetak Atoll islands and reefs (open access)

Geohydrology of Enewetak Atoll islands and reefs

Extensive tidal studies in island wells and the lagoon at Enewetak Atoll have shown that island ground water dynamics are controlled by a layered aquifer system. The surface aquifer of unconsolidated Holocene material extends to a depth of approximately 15 m, and has a hydraulic conductivity K = 60 m/day. From 15 to 60 m (approximate lagoon depth) the reef structure consists of successive layers of altered Pleistocene materials, with bulk permeability substantially higher than that of the surface aquifer. Because of wave set-up over the windward reef and the limited pass area for outflow at the south end of the atoll, lagoon tides rise in phase with the ocean tides but fall later than the ocean water level. This results in a net lagoon-to-ocean head which can act as the driving force for outflow through the permeable Pleistocene aquifer. This model suggests that fresh water, nutrients or radioactive contaminants found in island ground water or reef interstitial water may be discharged primarily into the ocean rather than the lagoon. Atoll island fresh water resources are controlled by recharge, seawater dilution due to vertical tidal mixing between the surface and deeper aquifers, and by loss due to entrainment by the …

Evaluation of liners for a uranium-mill tailings disposal site: a status report (open access)

Evaluation of liners for a uranium-mill tailings disposal site: a status report

The United States Department of Energy is conducting a program designed to reclaim or stabilize inactive uranium-mill tailings sites. This report presents the status of the Liner Evaluation Program. The purpose of the study was to identify eight prospective lining materials or composites for laboratory testing. The evaluation was performed by 1) reviewing proposed regulatory requirements to define the material performance criteria; 2) reviewing published literature and communicating with industrial and government experts experienced with lining materials and techniques; and 3) characterizing the tailings at three of the sites for calcium concentration, a selection of anions, radionuclides, organic solvents, and acidity levels. The eight materials selected for laboratory testing are: natural soil amended with sodium-saturated montmorillonite (Volclay); locally available clay in conjunction with an asphalt emulsion radon suppression cover; locally available clay in conjunction with a multibarrier radon suppression cover; rubberized asphalt membrane; hydraulic asphalt concrete; chlorosulfonated polyethylene (hypalon) or high-density polyethylene; bentonite, sand and gravel mixture; and catalytic airblown asphalt membrane. The materials will be exposed in test units now being constructed to conditions such as wet/dry cycles, temperature cycles, oxidative environments, ion-exchange elements, etc. The results of the tests will identify the best material for field study. DOE2.1D. Building Energy Consumption Analysis (open access)

DOE2.1D. Building Energy Consumption Analysis

DOE2 is a set of programs for the analysis of energy consumption in buildings. Programs are included to calculate the heating and cooling loads for each space (zone) in the building for each hour of a year (LOADS), to simulate the operation and response of the equipment and systems that control temperature and humidity and distribute heating and cooling to the space (SYSTEMS), to model primary energy conversion equipment that uses fuel (e.g. oil, gas, or sun) to provide the required heating, cooling, and electricity (PLANT), and to compute the life-cycle cost for building operation based on economic parameters (ECONOMICS). A user-oriented building description language (BDL) facilitates the description of the building geometry, central plant equipment, HVAC systems, occupancy, equipment, and lighting schedules, and the selection of other problem parameters. In addition to the LSPE programs (LOADS, SYSTEMS, PLANT, and ECONOMICS), the system includes the BDL processor, two report generators, a weather data processor, and UPDATE, a code maintenance program. Standard output reports are produced by the RPTGEN program. Only the weather data for Chicago, which are required for execution of the sample problems, are included.

Exclusive final states from photon-photon collisions at SPEAR (open access)

Exclusive final states from photon-photon collisions at SPEAR

Studies of exclusive final states produced by the two-photon process have been made at SPEAR by the Mark II and by the Crystal Ball Collaborations. Measurements of ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ and ..pi../sup 0/..pi../sup 0/ production in the mass region 500 MeV/c/sup 2/ < m/sub ..pi pi../ < 2000 MeV/c/sup 2/ are presented. These data include strong signals from the well-known f(1270) meson. The A/sub 2/(1310) has been observed via its ..pi../sup 0/ eta decay mode and its partial width to ..gamma gamma.. has been determined. A measurement of the cross section for the reaction ..gamma gamma.. ..-->.. ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ is reported. This channel is found to be small just above the four pion threshold, but exhibits a large enhancement near the rho/sup 0/rho/sup 0/ threshold.

Radiation shielding issues on the FMIT (open access)

Radiation shielding issues on the FMIT

The Fusion Materials Irradiation Test Facility (FMIT) is being built to study neutron radiation effects in candidate fusion reactor materials. The FMIT will yield high fluence data in a fusion-like neutron radiation environment produced by the interaction of a 0.1A, 35 MeV deuteron beam with a flowing lithium target. The design of the facility as a whole is driven by a high availability requirement. The variety of radiation environments in the facility requires the use of diverse and extensive shielding. Shielding design throughout the FMIT must accommodate the need for maintenance and operations access while providing adequate personnel and equipment protection.

Study of static reactive power compensators for high-voltage power systems. Final report, May 12, 1981 (open access)

Study of static reactive power compensators for high-voltage power systems. Final report, May 12, 1981

A general study of the application of static VAR compensators (SVC's) to high-voltage transmission systems has been performed. Considerable emphasis has been placed on improvements to synchronous stability, and it is shown that SVC's can provide significant benefits in terms of damping for unstable modes of oscillation and increases in transient stability limits. This report includes descriptions of static VAR compensators, technical and economic comparisons of different compensators, compensator models for system studies, comprehensive study procedures, study results for two small-scale systems, and guidelines for SVC application.

Nova Event Logging System (open access)

Nova Event Logging System

Nova is a 200 terawatt, 10-beam High Energy Glass Laser currently under construction at LLNL. This facility, designed to demonstrate the feasibility of laser driven inertial confinement fusion, contains over 5000 elements requiring coordinated control, data acquisition, and analysis functions. The large amounts of data that will be generated must be maintained over the life of the facility. Often the most useful but inaccessible data is that related to time dependent events associated with, for example, operator actions or experiment activity. We have developed an Event Logging System to synchronously record, maintain, and analyze, in part, this data. We see the system as being particularly useful to the physics and engineering staffs of medium and large facilities in that it is entirely separate from experimental apparatus and control devices. The design criteria, implementation, use, and benefits of such a system will be discussed.

Comparative gamma radiation and temperature effects on SiO/sub 2/, MgO and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ insulated nuclear instrument cable (open access)

Comparative gamma radiation and temperature effects on SiO/sub 2/, MgO and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ insulated nuclear instrument cable

The relative merits of SiO/sub 2/, MgO and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ as insulation for nuclear instrument cables are investigated. Insulation resistance, voltage breakdown phenomena, capacitance, dissipation factors, and spurious voltage and current signals have been investigated on nuclear instrument cables under the combined effects of gamma irradiation (10/sup 5/ R/h) and temperature (to 450/sup 0/C). The SiO/sub 2/, MgO and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ cables tested were all fabricated to procedures that controlled insulation and backfill gas impurities. The SiO/sub 2/ cables possessed insulation resistances greater than 10/sup 10/ ..cap omega...ft at 450/sup 0/C and 10/sup 5/ R/h - nearly two decades higher than MgO or Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ cables. Spontaneously generated currents as high as 250 nA dc were observed on some cables during thermal cycling tests.

Criteria for greater confinement of radioactive wastes at arid western sites (open access)

Criteria for greater confinement of radioactive wastes at arid western sites

This document provides a set of criteria and standards for greater confinement disposal (CCD) of low-level waste as an alternative to shallow land burial or deep geologic disposal for certain types of waste. The criteria and standards are discussed relative to seven major areas: radiation exposure protection, characterization of waste, transportation and handling, site selection, engineering, general facility requirements, and administration. The document addresses the objectives or goals of burial at intermediate depths to provide greater confinement, and its advantages and disadvantages compared to shallow land burial. Additionally, the document describes a generic greater confinement disposal facility (GCDF), and discusses as well as evaluates the various interrelating factors which must be considered in the selection of a viable site and in the development of GCDF design and performance criteria. Methods are developed for evaluating and ranking the importance of the factors based on health and safety, their potential impact on cost, and the uncertainty and/or difficulty in measurement and control of the factors. It also provides the methodology and analysis used to determine the various site-specific waste concentration acceptance standards (in the form of area disposal concentration limits) as well as design and engineering standards. It also illustrates the methodology …
