Monitoring of prestressed concrete pressure vessels. 1. An overview of concrete embedment strain instrumentation and calibration test results for selected concrete embedment strain meters (open access)

Monitoring of prestressed concrete pressure vessels. 1. An overview of concrete embedment strain instrumentation and calibration test results for selected concrete embedment strain meters

The report presents results of calibration tests on strain meters. The approach was divided into two phases: (1) an overview of meter performance criteria for PCPV applications and techniques for strain measurements in concrete and (2) procurement of commercially available gages and their evaluation to assess the reliability of manufacturer-supplied calibration factors. Calibration test results for gages embedded in 15.2-cm-diam by 54-cm cylindrical concrete specimens indicated that calibration factors should be determined (verified) by embedding samples of the gages in test specimens fabricated using a representative mix and that further research should be conducted on other measurement techniques based on inductance, capacitance, semiconductors, and fluidic principles.

LOFT reactor vessel head instrument penetration, flange thermal analysis (open access)

LOFT reactor vessel head instrument penetration, flange thermal analysis

A redesign of the LOFT instrument penetration necessitated a reanalysis of the thermal conditions existing in the nozzle and flange during a Loss of Coolant Experiment (LOCE). The maximum temperature gradient existing in the instrument flange will be used to determine the thermal stresses and maximum number of allowable cycles for the instrument flange. Based upon the specification and thermal conditions predicted by RELAP4/MOD5, the maximum temperature gradient through the flange will not exceed 216/sup 0/F. The thermal conditions predicted by RELAP4/MOD2 for the nozzle head penetration assembly were less severe than those used in the original thermal-stress analysis, so only the flange was analyzed here. If the thermal stresses are marginal with the 216/sup 0/F ..delta..T, a more detailed analysis should be done as the heat slab model used in RELAP is only one dimensional. Conservative hand calculations were performed for a heatup rate of 100/sup 0/F per hour and it was determined that the worst temperature gradient through the flange will be less than 81/sup 0/F.

TRU waste cyclone drum incinerator and treatment system: January--March 1978 (open access)

TRU waste cyclone drum incinerator and treatment system: January--March 1978

The cyclone incinerator was operated throughout the past quarter, generating additional data on system characteristics, equipment life expectancies, and by-product generation. Several changes in the incinerator system are in various stages of completion. The lid assembly, secondary chamber, and expansion unit for the new exhaust equipment are nearly ready for installation. A new heat exchanger has been installed in the scrubber system. An ash handling system has been designed for possible future addition to the system. Continuing studies will determine the best delivery mechanism for continuously feeding the cyclone incinerator. Preliminary investigations are being conducted to select an independent system to treat incinerator scrubber solution for recycling and to remove salts and sludge for disposal. Metal samples of two possible materials for incinerator construction were examined for corrosion degradation suffered at the incinerator exhaust outlet. Controlled experiments were conducted on the pressed ash-cement pellet matrix to define compressive strength, mechanical stability, density, and effect of curing environment (wet cure and dry cure). Leachability studies were initiated on pressed sludge/cement matrix in distilled water at ambient temperature. Compressive strengths of sludge/cement pressed matrix samples were investigated. Physical and chemical attributes of incinerated ash were evaluated in relationship to the ash/cement matrix.

Volume reduction system for solid and liquid TRU waste from the nuclear fuel cycle: January--March 1978

The laboratory cyclone incinerator, which started operation in January, 1978, has been developed to study the effects of burning feed containing radionuclides other than /sup 238/Pu. These isotopes must be removed from the off-gas during incineration. Preliminary data from early runs show that the combustion efficiency of the incinerator can still be improved. 7 figs., 6 tables.

Ion trajectories of the MFTF unshielded 80-keV neutral-beam sources (open access)

Ion trajectories of the MFTF unshielded 80-keV neutral-beam sources

The trajectories of ions from the Magnetic Fusion Test Facility (MFTF) 80-keV neutral-beam sources are calculated to obtain a preliminary understanding of the ion-beam paths and the magnitude of the power densities. This information will be needed for locating and designing thermal (kinetic-energy) absorbers for the ions. The calculations are made by employing a number of previously written computer codes. The TIBRO code is used to calculate the trajectories of the ions in the fringe magnetic field of the MFTF machine, which can operate with a center-field intensity of up to 2 T. The SAMPP code gives three-dimensional views of the ion beams for better visualization of the ion-beam paths. Also used are the codes MIG, XPICK, and MERGE, which were all previously written for manipulating data.

Brick-wall at high energy from trapped electrons in a dc beam (open access)

Brick-wall at high energy from trapped electrons in a dc beam

The space charge detuning of a dc beam due to electrons trapped is shown to be essentially energy independent. This leads to a curvature in the ..nu.. vs p relation. Left uncorrected, this would result in a "brick-wall" instability. It is shown that the strength of octupole field required to correct the curvature increases as the third power of the energy. Thus, large octupole correction coils are needed. The possibility of using stronger sextupole corrections to reduce the octupole requirement is suggested. However, this would mean that the working line would not shrink with energy, and ISABELLE would be required to operate with a tune spread greater than or equal to 0.02 even at 400 GeV.

Summary of climatic input for waste management site suitability criteria and state of progress (open access)

Summary of climatic input for waste management site suitability criteria and state of progress

Because groundwater movement can have important effects on buried nuclear wastes, hydrologists need to know if future climatic changes will influence the accuracy of groundwater flow calculations. Groundwater recharge (and therefore groundwater flow) depends on surface water balance. (Surface water balance equals precipitation less losses to evaporation, runoff, and storage.) To develop input data for modeling future climatic effects, we have made the following simplifying assumptions: (1) Climate (and therefore water balance) will behave in the future very much as it has in the past. (2) Groundwater recharge responds linearly to precipitation. (3) Future long-term climatic changes can be classified into groups or regimes that are similar to those of the past. Our current research is aimed at providing input data to the Waste Management Program's site suitability task. 16 figures, 1 table.

Assessment of fire hazards in buildings housing fusion energy experiments (open access)

Assessment of fire hazards in buildings housing fusion energy experiments

A number of materials in and within the proximity of buildings housing fusion energy experiments (FEE) were analyzed for their potential fire hazard. The materials used in this study were mostly: electrical and thermal insulations. The fire hazard of these materials was assessed in terms of their ease of ignition, heat release rate, generation of smoke, and the effect of thermal environment on the combustion behavior. Several fire protection measures for buildings housing the (FEE) projects are analyzed and as a result of this study are found to be adequate for the near term.
