High-level radioactive waste management alternatives
A summary of a comprehensive overview study of potential alternatives for long-term management of high-level radioactive waste is presented. IMPACT TESTING OF FOAM- FILL ED PAPER HONEYCOMB WITH ENERGYABSORPTTON CHARA CTERISTICS COMPARED TO BALSA AND REDWOOD
Twelve foam-impregnated paper honeycomb structures were impact tested at velocities between 150 and 318 fps (45.7 and 96. 9 m/s). The effect of velocity upon crush strength and the energy absorbed per pound of sample material were studied. The efficiency of epoxy-foam- impregnated paper honeycomb as an energy-absorber was compared to balsa and redwood. Test data suggest that epoxy- foam-filled paper honeycomb can be made equivalent to wood for use as an energy-absorber at the velocities studied if its density can be lowered from 24.2 lb/ft3 (387.7 kg/m3) to the approximate density of redwood (17.4 lb/ft3 or 278.4 kg/m3) by changing its composition.
