Environmental and technological implications of a theta-pinch fusion power plant (open access)

Environmental and technological implications of a theta-pinch fusion power plant

The environmental effects of this conceptual design were evaluated and found to be little different from other electrical power plants in most regards. Exceptions include a very small release of tritium, a low-hazard isotope, and relatively large amounts of radioactive material which must be either stored on site for eventual reprocessing or permanently discarded. These radioactive materials are nonvolatile and should not pose a difficult disposal problem, although some of the material may remain radioactive for hundreds of years. Natural resources required to build and operate the reference plant are not excessive except perhaps in the case of niobium and beryllium. The accident, sabotage, etc., problems of the plant are very minimal and although accidents can be postulated which would be inconvenient and costly within the plant, the probability of sizable impact on the surroundings is so as to be incredible.

Direct Conversion of Neutron Energy and Other Advantages of a Large Yield Per Pulse, Inertial-Confinement Fusion Reactor (open access)

Direct Conversion of Neutron Energy and Other Advantages of a Large Yield Per Pulse, Inertial-Confinement Fusion Reactor

Aspects of an inertial-confinement, fusion reactor that uses an energy release {approx gt}10{sup 11} joules are discussed. The large energy release makes possible direct conversion of the fusion neutrons' energy after nuclear heating of an evaporated blanket to the plasma state. Surface damage by charged particles is avoided and structural damage by neutrons is alleviated. Complex fuel assemblies and other expandable parts may be used as a result of the high monetary value of the energy release.

Leaching of radioactive nuclides from cement grouts. [Method for measuring rate of leaching of Cs-137 from cement grouts] (open access)

Leaching of radioactive nuclides from cement grouts. [Method for measuring rate of leaching of Cs-137 from cement grouts]

A method for measuring the rate of leaching of /sup 137/Cs from cement grouts was investigated as an alternate to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) method which requires long experimental times. The effects of curing time (10, 20, and 30 days) and the type of leachant (tap and saline water) on the amount of /sup 137/Cs leached were studied. Mathematical models for mass transport phenomena for both finite cylindrical geometry and a semi-infinite medium were developed to analyze the data. It was found that the models for diffusion of /sup 137/Cs with depletion of the species due to curing provided the best correlation of the data. The proposed method was found to give values of the mass transport coefficients within a factor of 2 to 10 of the IAEA test results. Diffusion coefficients were found to be in the range of 10/sup -9/ to 10/sup -11/ cm/sup 2//sec and depletion rate constants in the range of 10/sup -6/ to 10/sup -8/ sec/sup -1/.

Evaluation of hydrocarbon potential AEC study area, southeast New Mexico (open access)

Evaluation of hydrocarbon potential AEC study area, southeast New Mexico

The results are presented of evaluation of the hydrocarbon potential of a three-square-mile Study Area located in the northern portion of the Delaware Basin of Southeast New Mexico, encompassing the SE/4 of Section 35, the S/2 of Section 36, T21S-R31E, all of Section 1, the E/2 of Section 2, T22S-R31E, Eddy County, New Mexico; the SW/4 of Section 31, T21S-R32E, and the W/2 of Section 6, T22S-R32E, Lea County, New Mexico. As a result of the study, it is concluded that no economically recoverable oil and gas exist within the limits of the ORNL Study Area or under the acreage immediately adjoining the Study Area. Comprehensive analyses of the available geological and engineering data have been made for the upper portion of the Delaware Basin in which the Study Area is located, and the thorough study and analysis of these data lead to this conclusion.

Development of a Self-Contained Laminating Fixture

A laminating fixture with self-contained heating, cooling, pressure, and vacuum features has been developed for use in laminating adhesive-coated Mylar or Kapton to flat cables and other etched circuitry. Recent production with Mylar covercoat includes three separate conductor cables, large quantities of experimental test strips, and two advanced development systems.

IMPACT TESTING OF FOAM- FILL ED PAPER HONEYCOMB WITH ENERGYABSORPTTON CHARA CTERISTICS COMPARED TO BALSA AND REDWOOD (open access)

IMPACT TESTING OF FOAM- FILL ED PAPER HONEYCOMB WITH ENERGYABSORPTTON CHARA CTERISTICS COMPARED TO BALSA AND REDWOOD

Twelve foam-impregnated paper honeycomb structures were impact tested at velocities between 150 and 318 fps (45.7 and 96. 9 m/s). The effect of velocity upon crush strength and the energy absorbed per pound of sample material were studied. The efficiency of epoxy-foam- impregnated paper honeycomb as an energy-absorber was compared to balsa and redwood. Test data suggest that epoxy- foam-filled paper honeycomb can be made equivalent to wood for use as an energy-absorber at the velocities studied if its density can be lowered from 24.2 lb/ft3 (387.7 kg/m3) to the approximate density of redwood (17.4 lb/ft3 or 278.4 kg/m3) by changing its composition.
