Liquid nitrogen fire extinguishing system test report. [Pu fires] (open access)

Liquid nitrogen fire extinguishing system test report. [Pu fires]

The objective of this test series was to demonstrate the feasibility of using liquid nitrogen as a fire-extinguishing agent for certain types of metal fires. It was intended to provide data and experience appropriate to the design of a second series which will test the applicability of this technique to plutonium fires and which will develop more detailed operating information and permit more precise measurement of test parameters-oxygen depletion rates and equilibrium concentrations, temperature effects, and nitrogen pressures, flow rates, spray methods and patterns, etc. The test series was directed specifically toward extinguishment of metal fires occurring in well-confined areas and was not intended to be representative of any larger classification. Fires of several types were tested, e.g., magnesium, mixed magnesium and zirconium, sodium and cerium. (TFD)

Antineutrino Interactions in the 14' H(2)-Neon BC (open access)

Antineutrino Interactions in the 14' H(2)-Neon BC

We propose a 50-100,000 photo exploratory exposure of the 14{prime} BC filled with {approx}30% Neon, 70% H{sub 2}, to a broad band {bar {nu}} beam produced by whatever intensity ({approx}> 10{sup 12}) IP/pulse and energy ({approx}> 200 GeV) external proton beam is initially available. The Ne-H{sub 2} mixture permits {approx}10 x higher event rate than pure H{sub 2}; also direct detection of {gamma}, K{sub 2}{sup o}, n; better {mu}{sup {+-}}, e{sup {+-}} identification and the possibility of coherent production reactions from the nucleus as a whole as well as incoherent reactions from both neutrons and protons. The event rate vs. E{sub {bar {nu}}} and q{sup 2} will be measured to {approx}130 GeV permitting (in comparison with HBC experiments) estimate of the A dependence of {sigma}{sub T}, and (given crude flux estimates) tests of scaling and locality in d{sup 2}{sigma}/dE{sub {bar {nu}}}dq{sup 2} and {sigma}{sub T} as well as comparison of {sigma}{sub T} on n and p and of these with corresponding {nu} cross sections. Cross sections, particle momenta, invariant mass and angular correlation spectra will be measured for dominant channels permitting crude tests of {Delta}I = 1, {Delta}I = 1/2, {Delta}S = {Delta}Q, {Delta}S {ne} 2 rules. Proposal to Study Electroproduction with Coincidence Techniques at High Energies

Using the large aperture spectrometer of proposal 144 and the electron beam with the tagging system removed we propose to study deep inelastic electron scattering at incident electron energies between 50 and 150 GeV, for values of q{sup 2} between 1 and 20 Gev{sup 2}/c and {nu} between 10 and 130 GeV. The spectrometer will detect not only the scattered electron but also most of the secondary particles.

A Proposal of the Photoemulsion Experiment at the National Accelerator Laboratory (Batavia) (open access)

A Proposal of the Photoemulsion Experiment at the National Accelerator Laboratory (Batavia)

The experiments using a cloud chamber in a magnetic field and an ionizing calorimeter exposed io cosmic rays have been performed at the Lebedev Physical Institute I 1-3 I. They have shown that the hadron interactions with a LiH target at the energies of 200-700 Gev can be explained on the basis of the fireball model, supposing one fireball formation in a peripherical process, for about 50 per cent of events. The experiments carried out at the accelerator beams using the photoemulsion method at CERN (Eo = 2l-24 Gev) I 4 I and at Serpukhov (Eo = 60 Gev) I 5 I have indicated that the same model can describe the essential part of the pN- and {pi}iN - interactions (the quasi-free nucleon interactions are selected with the help of the criteria, approbated at the energies of {approx}20 Gev). It seems to be very important to continue this photoemulsion experiment at the energies of 200-500 Gev at the Batavia accelerator retaining the previous method of selecting the quasi-free nucleon interactions and measuring besides the emission angles of the charged particles also the momenta of these particles by their Coulomb scattering. Under the favourable conditions of exposure of the Soviet emulsions …

Strontium fluoride flowsheet development studies for the waste packaging program (open access)

Strontium fluoride flowsheet development studies for the waste packaging program

It was demonstrated that the modified version of the Martin flowsheet can produce SrF/sub 2/ of acceptable quality using a simulated feed of the same composition as the anticipated packaging plant feed. By careful control of operating conditions, strontium losses in the process can be reduced to an acceptable level. Using a nonrepresentative radioactive feed (which contained impurities not present in the simulated feed) high strontium losses were encountered in the feed purification step, although the purification obtained was excellent. The other steps in the process presented no difficulties. Additional tests of the feed purification step will be necessary when a representative feed is available to ensure that strontium losses can be reduced to an acceptable level. The proposed flowsheet differs from the Martin flowsheet in that a feed purification step is used in the proposed process. All the remaining steps in the process are essentially identical and the data and recommendations reported in the Martin publications appear applicable to the proposed process. Based on the results of this study (and including data published by the Martin Company), a detailed flowsheet with recommended operating conditions is given.

Position-sensitive proportional-counter system for use in the Enge split-pole spectrograph (open access)

Position-sensitive proportional-counter system for use in the Enge split-pole spectrograph

A variety of position-sensitive single-wire proportional counters with lengths up to 90 cm have been built and tested in the focal plane of the Enge split-pole spectrographs at the Argonne tandem accelerator and cyclotron. This report, which describes the counters, the associated electronics, and the data-handling procedures, is intended as an operating manual for general use of the system. Under ideal experimental conditions, the spatial resolution of the counters is about 1 to 1.5 mm (FWHM), dependent on the energy loss of the incident particle in the counter. The spatial response of the counters is linear to within 0.5% of the active length. Furthermore, the system contains a conventional proportional counter, behind the position counter, designed to provide particle identification based on the energy lost in the counter. Pulses from the two counters are normally analyzed in coincidence to provide excellent particle discrimination. Examples of typical experimental results are also presented.

ISOLEUCYL-tRNA SYNTHETASE OF E. coli B. A RAPID KINETIC INVESTIGATION OF THE L-ISOLEUCINE ACTIVATING REACTION (open access)

ISOLEUCYL-tRNA SYNTHETASE OF E. coli B. A RAPID KINETIC INVESTIGATION OF THE L-ISOLEUCINE ACTIVATING REACTION

We have investigated the preequilibrium kinetics of the L-isoleucine activation reaction catalyzed by Ile-tRNA synthetase in the presence of a fluorescent reporter group, 2-p-toluidinylnaphthalene-6-sulfonate, using the stopped-flow technique. It is found that of all the reactants involved, L-isoleucine binds slowest to the enzyme, apparently in a two-step process. The kinetics of the reaction are invariant in the presence of co-reactants, whereas the kinetics for ATP are drastically changed in the presence of Mg{sup 2+} ions. The formation of enzyme bound L-isoleucyl {approx} AMP is conveniently followed at dilute concentrations. The value for the rate constant of formation was determined to be 135 sec{sup -1} and of the reverse process to be 670 sec{sup -1} at pH 8.0 25 C. These values are considerably higher than the rate constant 15 sec{sup -1} of the dissociation reaction for L-isoleucine. The value of the kinetically defined equilibrium constant between the ternary Michaelis-Menten complex and the ternary enzyme-product complex indicates that, at equilibrium, the Michaelis-Menten complex is favored. The effect of temperature has been determined, and a tentative interpretation of the thermodynamic parameters is offered. The zero standard enthalpy and positive entropy for binding of L-isoleucine is consistent with hydrophobic interactions, whereas the enzyme-ligand …
