Analysis of alternatives: Plutonium button-line improvements
Reduction of Pu nitrate solution to metal is accomplished in the button line portion of the Remote Mechanical Line. Several areas of deficiency exist in the facility, which must be corrected in order to maintain continuity. In December 1963, a study was undertaken to define and evaluate the operational and economic parameters pertinent to deciding to improve or replace the button line. This paper documents the study and presents the conclusions and recommendations.

Calculation of the Shock Wave From an Underground Nuclear Explosion in Granite
The capability of calculating the close-in effects of the shock wave from an underground nuclear explosion has been demonstrated. Agreement was obtained between calculation and measurements using .a spherically symmetric, hydrodynamic, elastic-plastic code called SOC for the Hardhat event, a 5-kiloton nuclear detonation in granite. This capability is dependent upon having a more or less complete de scription of the elastic and dynamic properties of the materials involved. When this information is available, agreement within the limits of uncertainty of the measurements can be calculated for peak pressures, peak particle velocities, shock wave time of arrival, and pressure pulse shapes.

CYANAMIDE: A POSSIBLE KEY COMPOUND IN CHEMICAL EVOLUTION
The prebiotic synthesis of phosphorus-containing compounds--such as nucleotides and polynucleotides--would require both a geologically plausible source of the element and pathways for its incorporation into chemical systems on the primitive Earth. The mineral apatite, which is the only significant source of phosphate on Earth, has long been thought to be problematical in this respect due to its low solubility and reactivity. However, in the last decade or so, at least two pathways have been demonstrated which would circumvent these perceived problems. In addition, recent results would seem to suggest an additional, extraterrestrial source of reactive phosphorus. It appears that the 'phosphorus problem' is no longer the stumbling block which it was once thought to be.
