Defect-tests of power generating co-extruded fuel rods (open access)

Defect-tests of power generating co-extruded fuel rods

The effect of the many parameters which may influence the failure behavior of coextruded fuel material are being evaluated by Reactor & Fuels Research & Development Operation. This knowledge will be helpful in the design, fabrication, and operation of fuel elements so that the hazards and time involved at failure may be minimized. Many of the various tests performed on unirradiated coextruded fuel material have been in isothermal systems. The tests reported here were performed on power generating coextruded fuel rods. One of the purposes of these tests was to assess the effect of simulated in-reactor power generation and associated thermal gradients and thermal stresses on the defect-test behavior. Another purpose of these tests was to determine the degree of damage that might result to fuel components as a result of interaction (e.g., touching produced by warping or distortion of a failing rod) while at operating powers.

EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON RADIATION-INDUCED CONTRACTION OF REACTOR GRAPHITE (open access)

EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON RADIATION-INDUCED CONTRACTION OF REACTOR GRAPHITE

The distortion behavior of graphite as a function of irradiation temperature is reviewed. The behavior of needlecoke and CSF graphite was examined over moderate exposures in the GETR. Results showed needle-coke to be less contracting than CSF. Details of contraction show a minimum contraction rate per 10/sup 21/ nvt at 600 to 800 deg C for both types. Limitations to be placed on the data presented are listed. (P. C.H.)

IBM-7090 PROGRAMS TO COMPILE AND MODIFY A NUCLEAR DATA TAPE

The Reactor Nuclear Data Tape Programs were designed to compile and/or modify a nuclear data library tape from basic nuclear cross-section input. It is intended that this cross-section library tape will be utilized to provide up-to- date nuclear data for various reactor codes. Program RNDP was designed to compile an initial tape from certain minimal input data, or to add or delete complete blocks of data from an existing tape. Program RNDM was designed to compile and add to an existing tape macroscopic cross section data consisting of mixtures of microscopic cross sections available on the tape. Program RNOC was designed to modify and copy an existing tape, or to compile a new tape from sets of binary cards punched by Program RNDP. These programs were written using the FORTrAN-II system of automatic coding for the IBM7090. (auth)

SNAP II POWER CONVERSION SYSTEM TOPICAL REPORT NO. 8, MERCURY CONDESING RESEARCH STUDIES

Experimental results are summarized for investigations on the condenser fluid mechanics of mercury under zerogravity, two-phase conditions. Conditions required for interfacial stability in tubes were determined as a function of tube diameters. Correlated two-phase pressure drop data are presented as functions of tube inlet Reynolds number and vapor specific volume. Flow regime stability was studied under zero-gravity and 2.55-gravity conditions and at various Reynolds numbers. the effect of noncondensable gas on flow performance in mercury forced convection condensers was evaluated. On the Mechanism of Yielding and Flow in Iron (open access)

On the Mechanism of Yielding and Flow in Iron

The activation energy, activation volume, snd frequency factor were evaluated for yielding (delay time for yielding, upper yield stress, lower yield stress, and Luders band propagation) and flow (friction stress, flow stress, and dislocation mobility) for various irons and steels from data in the literature. It was found that the values of these flow parameters and their stress dependence were the same, within experimental error, for both yielding and flow, and for all the materials considered. This suggests that either the same dislocation mechanism is controlling in every case, or that one or more mechanisms possees approximately the same values for these parameters. The dislocation mechanism for which there was closest agreement between theoretical calculations snd experimental data was overcoming the Peierls stress. On the basis of the available experimental data and the present analysis, it is suggested that the upper and lower yield stresses in iron and steel may represent the sudden generation of a large number of dislocations by the double cross-slip mechanism of Koehler and Orowan, rather than the breaking away from a Cottrell atmosphere. MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF INSULATORS. Quarterly Report No. 1, Covering Period February 15, 1961 to May 15, 1961

The magnetic properties of color centers were studied to obtain information regarding electron traps in insulators. Experiments designed to determine the equation governing the recovery of resonance after saturation were carried out. Relatively large samples were prepared by the method of additive coloration. KCl and RbCl crystals were used. Resonance saturation as a function of concentration was investigated and no significant dependence found. Measurements of the unsaturated susceptibility were made at liquid nitrogen and liquid helium temperatures. The bleaching of the F-center to form the B-band produced a different resonance. The equipment for observing the saturation and recovery of a portion of the resonance at 4 deg K is described. A theoretical examination was made of the interaction between the vibration of the ions around a negative-ion vacancy in an alkali halide and an electron trapped at that site. (M.C.G.)

Radiochemistry for the rupture of a Zircaloy-2 clad uranium fuel element in KER-2 (open access)

Radiochemistry for the rupture of a Zircaloy-2 clad uranium fuel element in KER-2

During the 1600--2400 shift on August 7, 1960, the delayed neutron monitor on KER Loop 2 indicated a high coolant activity level. Sympathetic responses were also observed on the Loop 1, 3 and 4 monitors. This indicated a possible fuel element failure in Loop 2 and the KE Reactor began shutdown operations immediately. The purpose of this report is to summarize the events pertinent to this reactor outage and to discuss the results obtained from coolant and coupon samples taken from Loop 2 after shutdown.

The Sapir Program System of Automatic Processing and Indexing of Reports (open access)

The Sapir Program System of Automatic Processing and Indexing of Reports

The rapidly increasing volume of new data in scientific and technical fields demands faster and better ways to communicate the new information to those concerned. A working system, System of Automatic Processing and Indexing of Reports (SAPIR), for doing this is described. SAPIR makes use of the Keyword-in- Context Index principle, by which certain keywords, together with surrounding words that act as modifiers, are selected from the titles of the technical publications. These keywords with their modifiers serve as index entries from each title, therefore, there will be as many index entries generated as there are keywords contained in the title. The index entries are sorted alphabetically by the keywords. The first letters of the keywords in each of the index entries form a column in the printed format, which makes scanning for the soughtafter item easier. The SAPIR system is automatic and the list of citations is machine- generated on an IBM 1401 Computer. (auth)

NPR delayed neutron fractions and decay constants (open access)

NPR delayed neutron fractions and decay constants

This report discusses the delayed neutron characteristics of a reactor which are a function of the distribution of fissions in the various fissionable isotopes. The delayed neutron characteristics of the NPRL delayed fraction and decay constants, are presented as functions of exposure to 2000 MWD/T for both room temperature and operating temperature. It is of importance to note that the delayed neutron fraction decreases from 0.693% to 0.539% with increased exposure. Thus 22% less reactivity change represents a prompt critical condition at 2000 MWD/T, compared to the zero exposure condition.

FINAL STATUS OF GENERAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY AIR FLOW AND DUST TEST PROGRAM. PART I. PART II

A full scale 15 deg sector of the P122 reactor configuration was constructed. The model was complete with respect to all internal cooling air passages, and reflectors, thermal shielding, and island reflector. The contract was terminated before any test data could be obtained. Investigation of the effect of atmospheric dust on performance of reactor systems using wire screen matrix fuel elements is reported. The interim conclusion is that dust would not limit aircraft performance or life. Work proposed but not completed is outlined. Appendices contain previously unpublished reports. (auth)
