Interim report on tests simulating the transient response of individual process tubes to inadvertent plugging (open access)

Interim report on tests simulating the transient response of individual process tubes to inadvertent plugging

Current Panellit protection procedures, termed instability limits, come from calculations based on steady state experiments. However, the actual conditions in a process tube following a plugging occurrence sufficient to cause unstable flow are transient rather than steady state, and cannot be determined with great precision except by transient state experimentation. As a result, a program was initiated by the thermal Hydraulics Operation of HLO to perform a series of transient heat transfer experiments which would define the process tube response to (1) rapid plugging in the process tube assembly, (2) slow plugging in the process tube assembly, and (3) power excursions above normal of varying amounts. Transient heat transfer experimentation on a large scale is not common and many difficulties have been encountered. After preliminary runs were made and reported, a further series of runs were planned and run which would include K as well as BDF type data and would define more closely the upper limit of the panellit protection. During the test runs, data from these transient experiments are recorded on high speed recording instruments, each of which has a calibration which is subject to change regardless of the efforts expended by the experimenters. This means that checking …

A Report on the Kinematics of High Energy Electron Scattering (open access)

A Report on the Kinematics of High Energy Electron Scattering

"A convenient summary is given of useful formulas on the kinematics of high energy electron scattering together with a derivation of the relevant formulas for transforming from the center of mass to the laboratory system such parameters as scattering cross sections. The formulas derived hold for any two- body collision: the approximation (m = 0) employed for the electron scattering calculations is rigorously true for the elastic scattering of photons."

A Flight Investigation to Determine the Effectiveness of Mach Number 1.0, 1.2, and 1.41 Fuselage Indentations for Reducing the Pressure Drag of a 45 Degree Sweptback Wing Configuration at Transonic and Low Supersonic Speeds

Report presenting a flight investigation to determine the effectiveness of three fuselage indentations for reducing the pressure drag of a 45 degree sweptback-wing-body configuration at a range of Mach numbers. The results indicate that the supersonic area rule can be used to determine indentations with low pressure drag over a Mach number range in which the blunt leading edge is subsonic. Information about total drag and pressure drag is provided.

DEVELOPMENT AND PROPERTIES OF URANIUM-BASE ALLOYS CORROSION RESISTANT IN HIGH TEMPERATURE WATER. PART IV. RADIATION STABILITY OF URANIUM-BASE ALLOYS (open access)

DEVELOPMENT AND PROPERTIES OF URANIUM-BASE ALLOYS CORROSION RESISTANT IN HIGH TEMPERATURE WATER. PART IV. RADIATION STABILITY OF URANIUM-BASE ALLOYS

The effects of pile irradiations on the physical properties and corrosion resistance of U-- Mo, U-- Nb; and U--Si alloys are reported. The dimensional stability under irradiation of the gamma phase U-- Mo and U-- Nb alloys is excellent; however, an isotropic volume increase of 4 to 6% per wt.% burnup may limit the ultimate fuel element life. Corrosion resistance of the gamma-phase alloys appesrs to be improved when subjected to s neutron field; this is attributed to an irrsdiation induced stabilization of the gamma phases. The U/ sub 3/Si alloy, on the other hand, suffered severe deterioration, particularly of corrosion resistance. Changes in electrical resistivity, hardness, mechanical properties, and crystal structure are presented and the mechanisms producing the observed changes discussed. (auth)

PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF SUPERCHARGED NUCLEAR RAMJET PROPULSION SYSTEM (open access)

PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF SUPERCHARGED NUCLEAR RAMJET PROPULSION SYSTEM

A preliminary analysis has been made to compare the performance.of a ceramic ramjet reactor powerplant, such as described in General Electric Report No. XDC-56-5-81, with that of such a powerplant supercharged by a metallic-vapor-cycle compressor jet. Performance at sea level, Mach 2.5 is ·reported for the vapor-cycle compressor jet alone, for the ramjet alone, and for the compressor jet - ramjet combination. Results indicate that adding the compressor-jet as a supercharger for the ramjet provides an increase in specific thrust of about 20 percent over that of the ramjet alone, with an attendant increase in thermal efficiency of about 20 percent over that of the ramjet alone.

Concluding Report of Free-Spinning, Tumbling, and Recovery Characteristics of a 1/18-Scale Model of the Ryan X-13 Airplane, Coord. No. AF-199

"An investigation has been completed in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel on a l/18-scale model of the Ryan X-13 airplane to determine its spin, recovery, and tumbling characteristics, and to determine the minimum altitude from which a belly landing could be made in case of power failure in hovering flight. Model spin tests were conducted with and without simulated engine rotation. Tests without simulated engine rotation indicated two types of spins: one, a slightly oscillatory flat spin; and the other, a violently oscillatory spin" (p. 1).

Wall Interference in a Perforated Wind Tunnel (open access)

Wall Interference in a Perforated Wind Tunnel

"The theory of cascades, made up of a series of flat plates placed one behind the other, is extended to the case where the impinging stream is not uniform, and the deduced properties of this cascade-flow are then applied to the study of the wall interference between such as cascade-like boundary and a vortex-source type of singularity. It is shown that the induced velocities, produced by the presence of such a wall, are equal to what is obtained by action of a suitably chosen 'reflected' singularity situated on one side of the wall, together with the action of another suitably chosen 'transmitted' singularity placed on the other side" (p. 1).

Effect of bluntness on transition for a cone and a hollow cylinder at Mach 3.1 (open access)

Effect of bluntness on transition for a cone and a hollow cylinder at Mach 3.1

Bluntness was more effective in displacing transition downstream on a cylinder than on a cone. The downstream displacement of transition is related to the formation of a shock layer within which the Reynolds and Mach numbers are reduced and to pressure gradients that exist over the forward part of the model. Round bluntness in general had a favorable effect, whereas sharp-cornered flat bluntness above a certain size had unfavorable effects on the location of the transition point.

Some Effects of Valve Friction and Shock Stick Friction on Control Quality in a Helicopter With Hydraulic-Power Control Systems

Note presenting tests of a hydraulic-power-controlled helicopter to determine the effect of friction in the servovalves and the effect of stick friction when the valve friction is present. The tests showed that, when the valve friction is equivalent to about 1 3/4 pounds of force at the stick, precision flying is difficult and more work is required of the pilot.

Characteristics of a 40 Degree Cone for Measuring Mach Number, Total Pressure, and Flow Angles at Supersonic Speeds

Note presenting an experimental investigation conducted to determine the characteristics of a 40 degree cone for use in the measurement of Mach number, total pressure, and flow angles. The cone had a total-pressure orifice at the apex and four equally spaced static-pressure orifices on the surface and pressure measurements were taken at a range of angles of pitch, Mach numbers, and Reynolds numbers.
