Results regarding the delta-plan-form K1 function, indical spanwise loading distributions, effect of plan-form shape on the K1 function, and effect of aspect ratio on the K1 and K2 functions are provided.

Note presenting the effect of inclination of the airstream on the measured pressures of 54 total-pressure tubes for angles of attack up to 60 degrees and over a Mach number range from 0.26 to 1.62. The investigation was conducted in five wind tunnels. Results regarding effect of impact-opening size, effect of varying the shape of the internal chamber, effect of external shape, effect of slant profile, effect of venting of shielded tubes, effect of varying the probe position and the throat diameter of shielded tubes, effect of slant profile on shielded tubes, effect of the shape of the entry of shielded tubes, effect of Mach number on nonshielded tubes, and effect of Mach number on shielded tubes are provided.

Measurement of aerodynamic forces for various mean angles of attack on an airfoil oscillating in pitch and on two finite-span wings oscillating in bending with emphasis on damping in the stall

Report presenting measurements of the oscillating air forces on a two-dimensional wing oscillating in pitch about the midchord that have been measured at various mean angles of attack and at two different Mach numbers. The magnitudes of normal-force and pitching-moment coefficients were found to be much higher at large angles of attack than at low angles of attack for some conditions. Results regarding the effects at low angles of attack, high angles of attack, and a description of finite-span wings oscillating in first bending mode are provided.

"The transient motion in angles of attack and sideslip during a constant rolling maneuver has been analyzed. Simplified expressions are presented for the determination of the pertinent modes of motion as well as the modal coefficient corresponding to each mode. Calculations made with and without the derivatives for side force due to sideslip and lift-curve slope indicate that although these derivatives increase the total damping of the system they do not markedly affect the transient motion" (p. 131).

The characteristics of the V-tab horizontal tail and its downwash field were studied. Lift interference between fixed wing and rotor and possible means of drag reduction were considered.

Report presenting several short two-dimensional subsonic diffusers over a range of throat Mach numbers from 0.3 to 0.9. The designs incorporated an effective diffusion angle of approximately 30 degrees and an area ratio of 3. At a throat Mach number of 0.7, the resulting profile distortion of the unmodified 30 degree diffuser was diminished from about 11 to approximately 4 percent by using any of the configurations.

Jet effects on base and afterbody pressures of a cylindrical afterbody at transonic speeds

An investigation of the effects of jet nozzle geometry, size of base annulus, and base bleed upon the base and afterbody pressures of a cylindrical afterbody at transonic speeds has been conducted. Sonic and supersonic conical nozzles with jet-to-base diameter ratios from 0.25 to 0.85 were investigated with a cold jet at jet total-pressure ratios up to approximately 8.0 through a Mach number range from 0.6 to 1.25. Base pressure coefficients of about -0.55 were measured for the sonic nozzles at a Mach number of 1 or greater. The jet-to-base diameter ratio had a substantial effect on the base pressure obtained on the cylindrical afterbody of this investigation. Base bleed was beneficial in increasing the base pressure under certain conditions but had little or no effect at certain other conditions.

Geology and Uranium Occurrences in the Miller Hill Area, Carbon County, Wyoming

Abstract: Uranium occurs in the North Park(?) formation of Pliocene(?) age in the Miller Hill area, about 25 miles south of Rawlins, Carbon County, Wyo. As much as 0. 5 percent uranium is contained in grab samples, but only about 1000 tons of rock are known to contain as much as 0. 03 percent uranium. Beds of brecciated, silicified limestone 3 to 10 feet thick contain the principal concentrations of uranium. Lesser concentrations are found in calcareous sandstone and quartzite. Uranophane, Ca(UOz)2SizO 7 . 6HZO, the principal uranium'mineral, has been deposited in vugs, as fracture and surface coatings, and as a disseminated constituent of the rock. Uranium also occurs in quantities too small to be megascopically visible in dark-colored chalcedony, lime stone, sandstone, and quartzite beds.

Electric Conduction in an Oil-Pumped Vacuum System

The leakage of electricity aoross a vacuum space in an electrostatic generator which employs a mixture of Sr/sup 90/ and Y/sup 90/ as the source of charging current was investigated. The vacuum is obtained by means of an oil pump. The leakage was shown to consist of a flow of positive and negative particles between the anode and the cathode. The positive particles were found to be primarily organic ions produced in a layer of oil on the surface of the anode. The negative particles were shown to be mostly electrons. Yields of secondary negative particles and secondary positive particles produced by average positive particles in the energy range from 50 to 200 kev were measured. Yields were found to be dependent on the nature of the target material as well as on the energy of the incident ion. A mass spectrometer was employed to study the nature of the positive ions. Most of these were charged fragments of organic molecules. Neutral particles were attributed to dissociation of a portion of positive ions during their flight from the anode to cathode. Electrons, most of which originate at the beta source, are presumed to be the agent for positive ion production. …

Shielding Requirements for the Army Package Power Reactor

The design, selection, and calculation of the Army Package Power Reactor shielding are described. The APPR-1, a prototype of a package reactor for remote locations, has a primary shield of Fe and water. This shield has been adopted to permit fast erection and to provide low transported weight. Economically, including transportation cost, the Fe--water shield is better thnn a Pb--water shield and is competitive with a concrete shield for a remote site. Because of its location at Fort Belvoir, Va., the shielding requirements for the APPR-1 are considerably more stringent than those for a reactor at a remote base. Since the secondary shielding which surrounds the entire primary system must provide protection for personnel at any location outside the vapor container, concrete is provided for this need. (auth)

Regional Geophysical Investigations of the Uravan Area, Colorado

From introduction: Geophysical surveys have been made in the Uravan area, in southwest Colorado, with the aim of providing information on regional geology, especially on those aspects that may not be apparent from surface evidence alone. Aeromagnetic surveys were made in 1952, and regional gravity surveys were made during the summers of 1953 and 1954. Figure 1 shows the area covered. Information on surface geology was obtained from publications, from geologists working on the Colorado Plateau, and from personal observations.
