From Introduction: "This paper presents the results of an investigation conducted in the Langley 11-inch hypersonic tunnel to evaluate methods of increasing maximum lift-drag ratio."

Pressure distributions for a series of four boattailed bodies of revolution were obtained and compared with theory for a Mach number of 3.12, a Reynolds number range of 2 x 10 to 6th power to 14 x 10 to the 6th power, and angles of attack from zero to 9 degrees. Second-order theory adequately predicted the pressure distribution for regions free of the effects of cross-flow separation.

Report presenting new data on the age of the Boulder, Philipsburg, and Idaho batholiths of western Montana.

Memorandum presenting an analysis to determine the compressor pressure ratios and specific weight flows obtainable with single-stage air-cooled turbines for both nonafterburning and afterburning turbojet engines operating at a flight Mach number of 2 in the stratosphere. Wide ranges in turbine-inlet temperature, tip speed, hub-tip radius ratio, and coolant-flow ratio were considered.

Memorandum presenting pulse techniques applied to strain gages for increasing the output level and extending the usable range. Bonded and unbonded strain gages which normally operate with exciting potentials between 3.5 and 14 volts operated satisfactorily with 200-volt pulses of 1-microsecond duration and a repetition rate of 350 per second. Results regarding maximum allowable voltages, effective pulse duration, sensitivity, minimum readable signal, effects of cable capacitance and inductance, sensitivity to external noise, and linearity are provided.

From introduction: "The present paper deals with a classical calculation in which some of the meson effects can be included to all orders in the meson-nucleon coupling coupling constant, in particular those having to do with the gyration of the nucleon spin and isotopic spin. Such a treatment leads to results qualitatively different from the weak coupling calculations."

The following are some of the equipment currently used in the Health Physics counting rooms at the Laboratory: scintillation counters, end window beta-gamma counters, precipitcon beta-gamma counter, autoscaler beta-gamma counter, and continuous flow proportional counter. This technical report describes the equipment, supporting equipment, procedures, and sample preparation in use at the Laboratory.

From introduction: The present paper is concerned with fisherman-expenditures, fisherman-use, and yield of the fisheries involved, although some data on other aspects of the fishery were obtained.

The methods of an analysis of the critical safety of process tanks in the Recuplex installation are discussed and results of the analysis are tabulated in this report. A minimum critical condition for a thermal chain reaction is estimated for 0-200 MWD/T Pu and for 400 MWD/T Pu for each tank in the installation vhich normally contains, or could contain, plutonium. All estimates are based on experimental critical mass data from the P-11 project and from Oak Ridge critical mass experiments.

Critical mass measurements on graphite-tamped, heterogeneous oralloy-graphite systems have been made as a safety guide for certain oralloy casting procedures. Various concentrations were obtained by alternately stacking 10.5 in. diameter oralloy and graphite plates. In the relation Oralloy critical mass = constant x (fraction of oralloy in the core volume) -n values for the exponent, n, in the neighborhood of 0.70 were obtained.

Abstract: "A titrimetric method for the determination of fluoride in plutonium is reported. Prior to a steam distillation of the fluoride, the bulk of the plutonium is separated by precipitation of the sulfate. The fluoride in the distillate is titrated at a pH of 3.2 with 0.001 M thorium nitrate, using chrome azurol-S indicator. Applied to samples containing 1 to 15 parts per million fluoride, the recovery is 87% and the precision on the 95% confidence level is +/- 0.65 ppm."

Abstract: "A method for determining hydrogen in lithium hydride by heating samples with lead at 600 C, was developed. The hydrogen evolved during thermal decomposition of the hydride is purified and oxidized to water with cupric oxide at 400 C. The analysis is completed by collecting and weighing this water. Success in development of the analytical procedure has depended upon a careful design and assembly of equipment for handling samples in a dry, inert atmosphere. For seven pure hydride samples analyzed by the recommended method the estimates of the standard deviation varied between 0.12 and 0.41 percent lithium hydride (or 1.3 and 4.2 parts per thousand) for 8 to 18 determinations on each sample. The procedure is relatively insensitive to variations in certain conditions. For single-piece samples weighing 0.2 to 0.5 gram it was found to be more satisfactory than a method which uses mercury in place of lead for sample decomposition. For powdered lithium hydride samples the lead and mercury methods are equally satisfactory."

Report presenting a method for determining the lateral-stability derivatives, transfer-function coefficients, and the modes for lateral motion from frequency-response data for a rigid aircraft. The method is based on the application of the vector technique to the equations of lateral motion, so that the three equations of lateral motion can be separated into six equations. Two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the use of the method.
