Aluminium Corrosion in High Purity Water (open access)

Aluminium Corrosion in High Purity Water

Summary: "A corrosion test of aluminum components in a 4-ft. section of a fuel tube has been tested under conditions simulating plant geometry and, as nearly as possible, the operating conditions of water purity, temperature, and flow rate. Results: 1. None of the aluminum components, 63S fuel tube, 2S solid fillers and 43S spacers showed any corrosion effects beyond normal oxide film formation. This was carried out in flowing water, maintained at a specific resistivity greater than 1 x 10(6) ohm-cm, for four weeks. 2. No corrosion pitting was observed on any of the aluminum surfaces; all became covered with a uniform film of Al2O3.H2O. On the boat tails, where type 304 stainless steel fins were in galvanic contact with 2S aluminum, no pitting or preferential attack occurred."

Calculations on U235 Fission Product Decay Chains

Report of equations for calculating decay of U235. The introduction states" Calculations have been made on the U235 fission product decay schemes. The results for a typical example, that of a reactor operating at 1000 kilowatts for 180 days, have been tabulated and graphed. General formulae have been used so that the results can be applied for any power level and any time of irradiation" (p. 2).

The Colorimetric Determination of Total Iron With O-Phenanthroline

From Abstract: "A study of the critical factors in the colorimetric determination of total iron in silicate and phosphate rocks, and in other nonmetallic materials is presented. It was desired to ascertain the wavelength of maximum absorbancy, the optimum concentration range for iron, the effect of different substances on the ferrous-o-phenanthroline system, and reproducibility of results."

Effect of changing passage configuration on internal-flow characteristics of a 48-inch centrifugal compressor 1: Change in blade shape

Report presenting a modification of the passage contour of a 48-inch centrifugal impeller by changing the shape of the blades with the objective of reducing the deceleration rates along the blade faces and thereby improving the internal efficiency of the impeller. The modified impeller was found to show a general improvement in efficiency throughout the passage over that of the original impeller.

Effect of High-Lift Devices on the Low-Speed Static Lateral and Yawing Stability Characteristics of an Untapered 45 Degrees Sweptback Wing

Results of a low-speed wind-tunnel investigation to determine the effect of high-lift devices on the static lateral stability derivatives and the yawing derivatives of an untapered 45 degrees sweptback wing are presented. The tests were made in the curved-flow test section of the Langley stability tunnel at a Reynolds number of 1.1 X 10 to the sixth power.

Experiments to Determine Neighborhood Reactions to Light Airplanes With and Without External Noise Reduction

Note presenting a study that is part of a program of experimentation with external noise reduction on light airplanes. Two light airplanes modified by reduction gears, four-bladed propellers, and engine exhaust silencers were flown in comparison with two standard airplanes at a number of sites that may be useful as landing strips. Some conclusions regarding the number and types of complaints received are provided.

Feasibility of Various Types of Seals for the Carrier Freon 11 Turbocompressors (open access)

Feasibility of Various Types of Seals for the Carrier Freon 11 Turbocompressors

A preliminary feasibility study is made of seals for a machine running at 8000 rpm, having a 2-in. shaft, and operating with a pressure differential of 5 lb/in{sup2}. The following conditions must be met: during operation the air inleak shall not exceed 50 lb/2000 hr and the loss of Freon 11 shall not exceed 0.02 lb/hr; the leak-up rate during shutdown shall not exceed 1/10 in. of Hg per 24 hr (the contained volume is 100 ft{sup3}). Dry-contact and Freon 11-lubricated contact seals are considered briefly, but neither appears to be practical. The following positive-clearance seals are more feasible and are discussed in greater detail: concentric-cyinder seal, utilization of a journal bearing of the machine as a seal, and a radial-controlled-gap type of seal.

Method and Graphs for the Evaluation of Air-Induction Systems

Note presenting graphs for rapid evaluation of air-induction systems from considerations of their aerodynamic-performance parameters in combination with power-plant characteristics. The graphs cover the range of supersonic Mach numbers up to 3.0. The illustrative examples indicate that the inlet area required for optimum performance must change with altitude at a fixed Mach number as well as with Mach number at a fixed altitude.

On the Form of the Turbulent Skin-Friction Law and Its Extension to Compressible Flows

"A derivation of the form of the incompressible turbulent skin-friction law for an insulated flat plate is made in such a way that it may be extended to compressible flows. The ratio of compressible to incompressible skin friction is obtained, and the results are shown to be in agreement with existing experimental results" (p. 1).

Preliminary Appraisal of the Carnotite Resources of the Carrizo Mountains Area, San Juan County, New Mexico, and Apache County, Arizona

From introduction: A rapid appraisal of the carnotite resources of the Salt Wash sandstone member of the Morrison formation in the Carrizo Mountains area was undertaken by the U. S. Geological Survey late in 1951 in connection with its current project of geologic mapping of the area. Though brief and preliminary, this report provides a summary of production trends and estimated reserves in the area and indicates as far as possible the total potential of the area as a source of uranium. This information may be helpful in planning new milling facilities or other measures to encourage a higher rate of production.
