This design "relates to ash-pans for locomotive and other fire-boxes; and it has for its object to provide a simple and improved device of this character in which the contents of the pan may be discharged therefrom by a single operation of a controlling-lever. To this end the invention consists . . . in a sliding frame working in guides, a series of slats forming the entire bottom of the pan pivoted to the frame and carried thereby, a lever for operating said frame, and means for sustaining the slats normally in horizontal position" (lines 11-23).

Patent for a new and improved roll-box for cotton gins. This design "is to provide for a cleaning of the seed-cotton at its first stage of ginning, and thus prepare the same for a more effectual cleaning at the second stage of the process after the same leaves the saws" (lines 24-28). It consists, "with the gin-ribs and the revolving saws working between said ribs, of an unyielding perforated breast-board arranged in front of said ribs and a supplemental perforated cleaning-board above said ribs opposite said breast-board, forming an inclosed seed-cotton chamber" (lines 73-79).

This design "will automatically lock the gate or door when swung closed and which will firmly hold the same, which can be readily opened by hand or otherwise" (lines 17-20). It consists in "[t]he latch consisting of the case, the two triangular catches, the transverse pivots therefor in the lower outer corners of the case, the rigid stops at the lower outer corners of the case to prevent outward swing of said catches, the inwardly and laterally extending arms at the upper inner end of said catches, and the horizontal lifting-bar normally resting on said pivots" (lines 24-32).

It consists, "with the sweep curved in cross-section to form the central shovel-receiving seat, which is slotted opposite the rearwardly-disposed triangular sides or flanges, which latter are perforated near their lower ends and provided with their upper ends with curved slots, with which the perforations are concentric" (lines 55-62).

This design "is to provide for hand-cars a motive power which will produce a high rate of speed and which will enable a hand-car to be propelled in either direction without necessitating turning the car end for end" (lines 9-14). It consists of "an opening in its platform disposed over one of the axles, a rectangular casing arranged over the opening, a drive-shaft journaled in the sides of the casing, a train of gears consisting of cog-wheels and pinions connecting the drive-shaft and the axle, and the crank-handles arranged at the ends of the drive-shaft" (lines 64-71).
